The classroom teachers have been fine. But the school oversells itself on the front end. Yes, I see improvement in my child and I am thankful to the teachers for that. At the same time, the standardized test scores show the exact proportion of gap between my child's level and grade level as when we walked in the door. Meanwhile, the school is using yet another day of instruction time for non-instructional activity. That's valuable time when the Joy School calendar is already firmly below state-required minimum instructual days for public schools. Really, the school's focus seems expansion and building. I couldn't care less about the building fund. I care about whether, after three years, my child can read well enough to return to his mainstream school.

A little slice of heaven tucked into Houston's museum district........aptly named for the joy it brings to all that walk through its door. The school is excited about its current new construction which will enable it to serve even more students struggling with learning differences.

The Joy School is a phenomenal place for rebuilding the self esteem of students who have failed elsewhere. The teachers are all top-notch...the most professional, yet comfortable environment for learning in Houston.

This small school is aptly named. For a child frustrated with their learning disabilities and a public school system not willing to provide adequate remedies this school is a blessing. The teachers and staff are incredible! Small class size, great interaction with all staff and students, great parent involvement. Parental involvement is encouraged and may opportunities are available. After years of frustration and tears my son can now read and looks forward to school each day. He has made some close friends and will even do his homework without being asked! Thanks to the joy school I have my child back!

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
