I used to like this school but did always dis agree with them only teaching to the TAKS test. I have two types of students. One is honor role and the other has always struggled in class due to attention problem. Some of the teachers are very good and really care about their student but I have noticed the last couple of years an attrition of young teachers that don't have the same compassion for their students and if your student needs any extra help they make it quiet clear that they will not receive it. We were very pleased at the beginning when they had a new principal start, thought it would be good for the school but we see nothing from her. I wish school would teach like they used to because only teaching for a test to get your school funding does nothing for these students in the areas they are failing.
Hey this my last year at this school and i love it since preK to 4th and its only talking about taks cause their trying to get you ready for it until you move and plus they have to remind you thats its coming up remember im only in 4th grade the teachers a funny, nice, and everything you look for a teacher if you dont like it then dont let your child go to this school what are you talking about other parents we have field trips your child will always go outside like for recess, walks, and more on bad weathers we dont go outside to play we get to move any question ask me.
I understand all of you who have issues with the fact that Martin may have a focus in certain grades on the TAKS test. But have you taken your child to any other school? I work at a local university and one of the problems that we continue to encounter are students who are not prepared for our first year courses. Do you think this is an issue with the school or with the system? It isn't just the schools job to raise our children. If you feel your child is not receiving enough at their particular school, then go ahead and supplement the education they're receiving with additional classes or educational time with you. We can't rely on schools to raise our children if we want them to succeed. The students who do best are those whose parents are engaged and do what they can to help their student succeed.
I agree with the bad reviews. The school is very test driven. Everything is TAKS. If your child is smart and doesn't need to be taught for the test, don't send him/her there. HISD has great Vanguard and Magnet schools with the gifted program. They actually teach your child to think, not to take a test.
Have you read the Houston's Chronicle school report card? Martin didn't even make it to the 400 school list in the Houston area. I can tell you that the last ones on that list are not good schools, so where is Martin? Only 3 schools in the Alief district made it on the list. I am so disappointed!
I'm a new parent in the Martin School area and I too am very dissappointed with the staff there, this i my childs 1st yr. there and taks testing is the tops to them, instead if teaching kids how to take test to fail, teach them them the old fashioned way reading, writing, and arithematic, everything that looks good to you ,is not good fopr you .perhaps we as parents should start testing teachers to see if they are upto par!
My children have been going to Martin for 4 years now and I am very disappointed with it. The education they get there is below par and if I was not supplementing it with lesson at home, they would be very behind. Martin teaches to the TAKS test and for the whole year my child has had the same homework. (TAKS worksheet) That is all they care about. My children have told me several times that they watched a whole movie that day. There are no activities. No field trips. When you complain, the teachers try to talk down to you or ignore you. I can not recommend this school to anyone. We moved to this District from HISD and let me tell you, HISD is much better. At least there you can transfer your child to a better school in the district. Here, that is not an option.
The teachers are excellent. They take the time to meet w/parents and answer all necessary questions. The school welcomes parent involvement.
Both of my kids have attended Martin Elem. It is a very good school overall. They provide opportunities to get parents involved. They have wonderful student productions. Most of the teachers are very responsive and supportive. Both of my kids had wonderful experiences and enjoy their school.
