The admin at this school micromanages teachers to the point they fear losing their jobs. Some teachers at this school lack good discipline management, where yelling at students is seen as normal and a common practice at this school. The academics focus too much on teaching to the TAKS test. The work environment is very segregated and no real cooperation between teachers. However, the only positive is that there are a handful of real quality master teachers at this school which finally gave the school a TEA recognized rating for the first time in school history for the 2009-2010 school year.

Awesome atmosphere! Students and staff are both respectful towards one another. Excellent opportunity to excel in academics and extracurricular activities. The parental involvement is great during schoolwide events.

I have two grandchildren who attend Owens Intermediate. The academic programs seems to be OK. The main focus is on teaching students to pass the TAKS test. Extracurricular actiivities are good. The music program would be better if the students had a teacher dedicated to just Owens. Parent involvement is poor. The school is not very parent friendly, which I believe is a key factor in low parent participation. Overall, I think that Owens is a good school.

while visiting the school i was inside a room and heard a teacher yelling...really yelling at students. I went into the hall thinking something was happening. students were in a line and sadly, she was just yelling, in a demeaning manner at a child. there were a few boys at the end of the line and i asked them what was wrong. they said: 'she always yells like that.' they looked scared. i asked her name and was told: Ms. Butler. i realize that this age child are many times very taxing and many are not polite. however, it sadens me that so many teachers (i have heard a lot of teachers and principles yelling at students)use this type of behavior to manage students. this is the same type of behavior that teachers then turn around and punish students for. go figure.
