I am currently in 8th grade going to West Briar Middle School. I loved BBE. From what I remember, this school has outstanding academics and a great faculty. I remember when I was in BBE Mrs. Bush (the spectacular First Lady) visited us once a year and read us all a book, from Pre-K to 5th grade. I had a twin brother with Down syndrome and I remember the teachers there loved him and treated him very well. When I went to middle school, with my brother, my intelligence level drained due to the level of teaching as well as the atmosphere. West Briar Middle School is becoming worse and worse through the years. Our new principle Simpson is rude. She is cruel to the students, does NOT listen to the student and even the teachers agree. I am very scared now because I have a few high school magnet programs I would like to apply for but I'm scared my IQ has gone down because of that school. I was zoned to go there but to sum it up Barbra Bush is and excellent school and try not to go to WBMS. I'm sorry but it's the truth. Good lick with your choice of schools! I strongly recommend BBE!

We just started school this year. My kids moved from a private montessori. While they are adjusting with the big school rules and environment, the teachers and staff work very very hard with the kids. Ms.Ennis is the best teacher one could have asked for. So is the reading teacher. Ms.Junco is working fantastic with my younger one. It's a pleasure to be in this school. The front office staff are so helpful and even the ancillary teachers are so warm and creative with the kids. My kids love it now. The principal, vice principals are always at the car pool lane making sure the kids are safe, whether it's rain, shine or thunder. Hats off!

Bush is a "good school" academically speaking-overall. That is partly because they have an active PTO and are populated by families with middle to high incomes to support it. Also because of SOME, not ALL of the teachers. They drive you nuts about making sure your kid is in school daily so they don't miss funding. Duh. Some teachers are inspiring and accept that not all kids learn the same way, while others will demonize and vilify kids who are not perfect straight A/gifted students. My kid struggles due to a documented learning disability, but several teachers treated him with disrespect and bias because of it. The resource teacher is low key but awesome. Some teachers even told her she did not "want" to learn. A few others were compassionate, inspiring and supportive. So, it's truly a hit or miss. They retest students over and over until they get the best grade that looks best, and then say that their students are better performers overall when I don't think that is true in actuality. They do not administer discipline equally, so don't expect that either. There's students whole parents work here and who are subsequently,"immune" to the rules.

Barbara Bush Elementary is an excellent school, GT (Gifted & Talented) program is the best . My daughter is currently attending Kindergarden and is amazing the progress in her reading level. Her reading level is the same of an average student in second grade, tested by an independent source. She has read more than 100 books since the beginning of the year. The education in Barbara Bush is comparable as several private schools in the area. My daugther loves going to School, I have great communication with her teacher, I am very proud to be part of this School. Parent involvement is awesome, moms volunteer in many areas needed. Public Education works when teacher & parents work together in committing for excellence in education. I hope other public schools will follow Barbara Bush footsteps in educating our kids. Love Barbara Bush!

Barabara Bush is in my opinion the best school in Houston after only T.H Rogers. I have my daughter here for past two years and I am very happy with the way she is making progress. At age five and half she could read Accelerated Reading books with level as high as 3.5. She could read do her math addition (independantly) and subtraction (with some assistance but thats because she is still developing and is youngest in the class). There are other activities like French (one has to pay for this) and Spanish languages, and music etc which is added help to learn more languages. The school has accelarated reading program, which helps kids to read atleast one book everyday so kids end up not just reading lot of books but develop reading as a habbit. Parent involvement is encouraged and lot of parents volunteer to help teachers in and out. Teachers are excellent and I regard the school for helping to shape the future of our kids.

I am a student here at Barbara Bush Elementary. I love everything. The teachers are nice but still strict. Much better than Village School or other private. I disagree with all the parents who submitted this school as bad but although the school is good the front office people are very mean. I have been here seven years. They provide ESL after school sports, after school technology, chorus,Name That Book, after school art. It has very good grades and is Exemplary. Encourages you to study in a fun way. It is not always worksheets worksheets worksheets in classrooms. We play educational games. The teaching is very good. mostly 99% on TAKS! The teachers are very helpful. Only maybe 3 homework worksheets a day when you get to 5th grade. (Which I am in). It also has West Briar Middle School right next to it and Westside High School in front of it. It's location is perfect. I LOVE BARBARA BUSH ELEMENTARY!!!!! LETS GO BOBBCATS!!!!

I will deduct couple of stars because of Admin staff's behavior. School is good, teachers are good, Admin staff at front desk is rude and un-supportive. I met with registrar, she is a wonderful lady. Activities at school are great. I wish I never have to deal with Admin Staff, I could be same rude to them but thought about my kids who stay in school whole day, I dont want them to face the staff at all :(

ESL is fantastic, they have helped children from France who moved in the middle of the year build enough knowledge that they could follow class after 6 month, keep those children interested and give them support and extra motivation to help them achieve their potential. Great terachers, my son was diagnosed there wioth dislexia and thanks to the incredible support of the remedial teacher there, has managed to overcome so much and enjoy school., great team and principal I could not recommend it enough !

ESL is a fake, they don t provide any help to the international students some of the teachers are not honest and they don t do what the government pays them to do. Administration attitude is horrible and very rude in their communication. My Overall rating 3 out of 10.

Barbara Bush has been a huge blessing in my son's life. As a special needs child, he has grown tremendously under the care and love of all around him. Bush does a great job of inclusion and his one on one teach is a saint (Mrs. Lebuffe). The children in his classes are so loving and wonderful to him as well. I feel like the overall atmosphere of the school trickles down from the principal. Even the ladies in the office are happy and helpful.

This is a public school with the higher standards that can be expected from a private school. Negative comments can be said about any environment you are in, it is just a matter of what you wish to focus on. Over all, a fantastic school, great education, without the price tag. Really, isn't that ones dream?!

My child has attended Bush for three years. I am very happy with her performance in the gifted program. We looked at several private schools in Houston and we decided to send her to Bush because they had better programs. I the only issue that I have seen is the school in over crowed at this time, but they still maintain a positive attitude. The school year 2007-2008 the school will drop down to only 600 student. This will be wonderful. Barbara Bush even comes and reads to the children once a year, and this is a big honour for her to do so each year. I highly recommend the school.

I had heard nothing but rave reviews about Barbara Bush when moving here. I'm somewhat disappointed in the school - the office staff is rude (haughty attitude that implies we should be grateful our children go there!), the clinic is a joke. The only focus is on academics - the 'arts' receive nothing more than a cursory nod, which is unfortunate as the art teacher is wonderful. In music, the kids learn songs, not music. Car drop off in the morning is dangerous - kids are dropped off in the middle of the street, cars do U-turns and there are no teachers in sight to supervise. Teachers are too focused on testing to the point they are robotic. I've been to the school to have lunch and it is rare to see a smiling teacher!

Barbara bush feels like a zoo. The office staff is rude and never knows what programs are occuring on campus. The car pick is dangerous and chaotic. It takes 20-30 minutes each day just to pick up my son.

I feel that Bush is an excellent school academically. The teachers are conscientious regarding the progress of both girls and have made sure tutoring has been incorporated whenever it seemed necessary. I do feel however, that the school seriously lacks in areas of creative learning and extracurricular activities such as art, music and athletics. While there are some, it seems very sparse. I believe that an equal balance of strong academics along with an emphasis on the creative development of students would strongly enhance and benefit their overall ability to become successful throughout the rest of their academic career as well as in their adult lives.

Barbara Bush is an outstanding school with amazing teachers and staff members. Many of the teachers are young offering a fresh new perspective on teaching methods. I have two children at Bush, and they look forward to waking up and attending school each day. They adore their teachers and are held to high academic standards every day.

Great School! it used to be better but its still okay. Great academic work, not very warm and fuzzy for the little ones. Parents are very involved. Extracurricular activities are not very encouraged. Mostly all about academics. Good for some not for others.

I had one child go through Bush and a second one in 1st grade and at this point I've had enough of the stress level. The school is so focused on the TAKS or Standford 10 that they careen through the subject matters and I fear that my child is not getting a grip on the true fundamentals needed to become a successful adult. I have decided to take my child out of Bush and transfer to a private school. Where a child can learn and still be a child!

This is a very deciplined school. Maybe their strict rules are a little hard for the child, but for the long run, it's good to children's growth. Academics are good. There are homeworks to keep the children busy. Teachers are professional and responsible. The drawback is that the parking space is very limited, so it's a struggle everyday to send kids to school. Overall, a very good choice for a public shool if you don't want to send your kids to private svhool.

A good school that can improve further. Strong PTO and great facility. Teachers generally are great, while some can be more personal. One shortcoming is that kindergarten program can be boring for kids who had pre-school education. They don't recommand to move student to higher grades even if the student is academically ready.

Well I'm not a parent I'm a former student and I think that Bush is an Awsome school. The teachers know when to have a good time and know when to buckle down. My friends and I were totally sad when we had to leave because we had been there since Kindergarden. (They just started having Pre-K) It was so sad. In an overall grade I would give them an A+.

My eldest child attended last year and will attend again, along with my middle in Prek. The teachers seem dedicated and caring towards the students. Although, the principal (who retried)was not fair in my opinion. I did not like the fact that there was not a parent meeting/vote about the kindergarten graduation. The parade was okay but a small dignified graduation seemed more appropriate. She only seemed to talk to the partents/staff she knew and was snobby. The office staff only talked to me when I was dressed up. Other times when I came in a hurrry/clothes thrown on they were tight lipped and rude. The atmosphere besides the teachers is an unpleasant one and reflects on the students.

We moved to Houston the second semester of 2003-2004. At first, I was upset with the lack of patience the teachers had with my daughter. She was just moved from a different state, in a different time zone, with a different climate. Because we have moved with her before we know it takes 2 weeks for her to become comfortable in her new school. After the first month, I was very pleased with the consistency that was shown to her at Bush. She was doing well in class and I loved the teaching style that was used. I am blown away with this wonderful school, in this wonderful state. Family matters here in Texas and at Bush! It is shown through the activities planned at the school for the parents and students. We are looking for a house and will only buy one with Bush listed as the elementary school. A+++ rating!

I wanted to review my comments I made last year. I started working direct with Mrs. Ennis and I am glad to say that I was wrong. She did a great job with my son. I was really willing to move house because my son was in denial mode. Now I can tell you that the end result of this year was great and I will miss Mrs. Ennis very much. Her passion for the kids made the difference. Helder Eloy

In reading the previous comments I was initally suprised at extremly bitter comments made by a few respondents. The ratings seemed to be either highest marks or lowest. In my association with this school I have been extremly pleased with both disciple and instruction and consistency over the past 12 years. This school has been rated as an exemplary school every year, and chosen as one of the top schools in Texas by Texas Monthly Magazine. Elementary school is not a playgound nor a boot camp, education is a serious objective but so is character development. I feel Bush tries very hard at both goals. My child loved their experience at Bush and so did I.

This school is run like an academy with emphasis on fundamentals and high expectations for the students by the teachers that teach them. This can all be traced by the excellent principal, Ms. Givens, who has had more challenges than any dealing with overcrowding. While some teachers are stern, they are not hateful as some would imply. It puts far exceeds it educational objectives, especially when compared to a nearby private school. It is not a school for faint hearted parents or kids who want to coast through school, but the disciplined learning environment yeilds results. Bottom line: For a public school it cannot be bettered.

My personal experience with this school has not been a pleasant one. The teachers are not 'warm' or 'caring'. They humiliate both parents and students publically. It is very unprofessional. We are now sending our child to a private school and we are extremely happy with the change in his self esteem. My advice would be to explore other options before moving to this school.

This is an excellent school. My two older children graduated from this school and my youngest is in Kindergarten. Learning is a serious business and academic excellence should be the goal of every child. The principal and her staff work hard to impact this to the children. They should be applauded. Their dedication and committment to these children is very inspiring.

Our children are new to the school and attend 1st & 3rd grade. I totally agree with the negative comments about the stricness and stess levels. However, to rate it a poor school is just not possible. Education is high, and the teachers and principals do care about the children. They just need to chill a little!

I have had two children go through this school. My husband and I have decided to not have our third child go to Bush. The stress level has been too much for us and our children. Both children did very well, but it came at a price. I have two very stressed and burnt out children. The children are expected to be almost robotic, not just in the classroom but in ancillary, the lunchroom, even on the playground. Children have their whole adult life to be stressed, shouldn't elementary be one of the fondest memories we have?

I like the school. The kids are very polite and the teachers are very concerned about all the students. The teachers get involved with their classes and most of all are eager to learn or hear about your child after he/she goes to the next grade.

Instead of trying to put kids in a box that fits the school needs to get high TAKS scores, the administration should be teaching the kids to stretch out for the stars. So what if 90% of their kids pass TAKS with at least a 70%. This school is all about their own image and not about teaching kids to love school and become life long learners.

My child has attended Bush since K and is now in 4th grade. I have been an active volunteer since day 1. The school overall has an excellent record for academics. 4th grade is tough, but the 4th grade teachers make it tougher. I have spoken with the assistant principals on several occassions and when all was said and done, I wondered why I wasted my time. They appeared not to be interested in anything I said, all they wanted to do was talk about my child's academics and not about why I asked for this meeting in the first place. There is no counsler on staff to talk to if your child is having problems or if the parent would like to talk to someone about their child. All problems great and small are to go to the assistant principal or principal.
