Young Woman's Collage Prepatoy Acadmey. This school is helping us prepare for life in the real world. Our school can improve by the libary, because we really don't have books, and we would appreciate if we can improve our knowledge with reading.
DeBakey High School is Houston's number one high school for a reason. However, it is not for everyone. It is for those willing to give up free-time for homework and studying. The loss of this time is compensated by the great experiences no other high school can offer such as more exposure to the medical field and access to knowledge of medical science. In addition, the students are kind; none or rarely any bullying. Many are willing to help. Also, the preparation makes college easier. The pros outweighs the cons.
DeBakey has very rigorous courses but it's only worth going to if you're able to take many Pre-AP and AP classes. Course selection is very inflexible and the counselors do not care for the students at all. Most of the teachers are very good and want to help you, but some are just awful; however the administration does not care and it is nearly impossible to complain or even change teachers. There are no sports teams and extracurricular activities are hardly existent with the exception of HOSA. You should only consider DeBakey if you're willing to give up other activities and your social life. Despite this, it still leads to many other opportunities, including the hospital rotations and Baylor-UoH program.
How do I get my child in this school. He is being homeschooled. Does he needs to take a test and where can he take rest. Need help
Debakey prides itself on a lot of meaningless work. The school does not emphasize creativity or individuality, which is a shame as the school contains the brightest minds in the district. The way the administration treats the students is atrocious. You would think these were the most troubled students in the nation. It enforces stupid rules for no reason other than to give students a hard time. Rules are important, no doubt, but the school seems to have no trust for its students. Despite forming a diverse community, the students are very segregated. The big divide comes with AP/Non-AP, and race lines are common and sad. The school has next to no social events for the students, which makes for a limited experience. Some teachers are incredible, and others are extremely questionable. Most don't seem to care for their students but rather for their salaries or their stats. Most play favorites, and several make up grades. The few that do care are harassed by students for being unfair or difficult. Please think twice before sending your child here. Sure, Debakey is a prestigious high school, but it doesn't look nearly as good in reality as it does on paper.
This is my first year at DeBakey. I really don't like it. Most of the teachers dont teach, they expect you to know the book by memory. The staff is extremely rude and treats the student body like jailors. I would only recommend this school for people who are ABSOLUTELY sure about going into the medical field. But the one one good thing is the student body. Everyone is very friendly and sweet. The one thing that gets me through my hell-ish life at this bogus school.
Hi, I am a senior at Debakey. I attended it for all 4 years, so I will offer my insight as to how the school is. Think of Debakey like an Ivy League school. It has a lot of prestige, but it's not the place for the BEST teaching experience or even overall experience. It is important for parents who are committed to the school to do their research. It is not for everyone. Pros>> -Excellent math department- one of the top in the nation. -Some teachers are highly qualified and helpful through not just an academic perspective. -Excellent student body of diverse, motivated, and friendly kids. There are no blatant cliques at the school. -Offers professional preceptorship to renowned hospitals and research institutions to each student. -Will prepare you for college. Cons>> -Not for people who are not interested in medicine. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE HEALTH CLASSES ALL 4 YEARS. -Almost no sports. Don't plan on being a varsity here. -Teaching is very much by the book. Creativity is not emphasized. -Red tape all over the place and very stringent rules. -Sheer amount of work gives little social development. Everyone is just a number. - Limited course options, and little flexibility.
I went to this school, and I would say its not good nor is it bad. This school focuses students just on health, yes it's a medical school I realize that. The focus on just health makes it so there are no other activites. The arts division is barely there, nothing about technology except one class, and barely other classes such as sociology and anatomy. I'm not sure if anything changed, but if you're locking down a student to focus on one thing instead of letting them explore what other talents you have, there's no difference between going to school or not. When you go to school you go to learn, learning what you are adept at and are more interested in. It's misunderstood by many that you are learning about something you will remember forever, you can but the real point of school isn't to remember what year the Aztecs reached Teotihuacan. Aside from that, the teachers work amazingly hard and to them, hat's off for the great work.
Most of these comments about this school are greatly outdated. The school has changed tremendously..The school still has some of the best students and the work is extremely rigorous, but one thing that I notice is that the school has changed and in my opinion, the cons are outweighing the pros. Some teachers are absolutely amazing and are actually there to help students but other teachers are just teaching for the money. This school not only overprices everything (UNIFORMS!!) but they also WASTE it on pointless things. How about instead of wasting money getting another portrait of debakey and actually doing something to fix up the school? The faculty is strict and does so many unnecessary things! They treat students like DOGS giving them the least respect, they're extremely rude. They will punish you for the most ridiculous things. Debakey is an excellent school in academic perform./offers wonderful oppurtunities but I think they should treat the students with more respect, the ones making the school a top tier/ highly respected school. It's sad that the public only sees the school as a perfect rigorous high school, but they should see how the staff treats the students..
I attended this school over 20 years ago and still have good memories of it. The administration back then was fair and consistent. Many of the teachers, including Mr. Barrows and Ms Hood were brilliant. I eventually went on to practice community pharmacy for 15 years with much ease and confidence. I would definitely recommend this school to any students interested in the Health Professions- well worth it. The only thing that was lacking was extra-cirricular activities such as sports, band, drama, etc- would have been a nice bonus.
School is Great. Teachers are excellent. Kids are very sensitive need to be taken care very carefully. Please do not burden Kids to carry Heavy Heavy Heavy Books Daily.Teaching need at High School Level but not College Level. Encourage kids to learn not to worry every second to carry Big Back Pack so heavy and worried about the hectic home work.
DeBakey High School is wonderful in the sense of academic performance; anyone can tell you that. What most people don't understand is that, although it has wonderful opportunities for its students and it prepares them for college, there are also a lot of not so great things. I am currently a senior at HSHP and my experience at DeBakey has been a roller coaster ride. There are many ups and downs. The student body is very small, which means that by your senior year, you practically know everyone, and you become very close. The teachers are truly amazing and they will work with you through anything. There are no sports teams at DeBakey, but we do have sports clubs, which somewhat compensate for the lack of teams. If you do choose to go here, expect to have no social life. Its a given. But its worth it in the end.
DeBakey HSHP is a wonderful school and can be fully appreciated by the student if he or she is very hard working. There are some students who would complain about the work load and the teachers. My response to their complaints is that they are probably unable to handle the high expectations that the DeBakey staff and school has for them. I love this school and would recommend it to any student who is ready to work hard for a great future and a great learning experience.
Principal works hard. Staffs are great. Most students understand that they have to study hard when attending this school. My daughter also works hard to keep herself ranking at the top fourth. The only complaint is that while most of the teachers are great, some new teachers seem not to be very experienced in teaching efficiently. They struggle together with the students.
Our son attends DeBakey. He is in 10th grade. I can tell it is a demanding school since, for the first time his report card had a couple of Bs. Considering he is taking 3 AP classes and 2 AP it is not too bad. Something a parents need to consider before enrolling their children at DeBakey is if their children are ready for a demanding school. If they are not one of the top students in the class, my advice is, do not send them to DeBakey. I think any serious student is ready to handle the load of work.So far our son does not spend the most of his time doing homework, in fact, most of the time he does little work at home ( he says he has time to finish most of it in school).
I am a student currently attending DeBakey High School and feel that the teachers give too much homework that leads to only 4-5 hours of sleep at night. The lack of caring, enthusiasm, and overall teaching abilities leads to more stress on the shoulders of the students. I had very high expectations coming to this what I thought prestigious school, but am highly dissapointed. I really do not like attending this school and very much would like to leave after this year is over.
Debakey is the 'Harvard' of Houston area schools: Low acceptance rate, dedicated teachers, motivated and brilliant students, and a difficulty rating that skyrockets above all. Like any school, it has cons: it has a limited AP program, some lazy teachers, and a very restricted athletic opportunity. However, the pros of this school outshine the cons and explain the reason this school has constantly earned a place in 'Top 100 Schools in the Nation'. The way a school wins this coveted rank is through two foundations: Students and Teachers. The student group is diverse; more than 150 different countries are reflected in 700 students. Furthermore, students are much more mature and motivated than other schools. Though some teachers could improve, most are willing to do anything to help you succeed. They make sure to put up a challenge to test and improve the universal capabilities of all students.
Nice place. Your reputation precedes you throughout college at the very least. DeBakey students seem more mature, or maybe we were just more sheltered. Well anyway, it's a good school, if you can't find a good reason to go, go for the reputation at least, you'd be surprised at how many people raise eyebrows after hearing you're from DeBakey. Most of them will think you are a genius, but most of us are far from it.
I am currently a student at DeBakey. I came from a private middle school and was not at all used to such a demanding environment. At Debakey, they have a exemplary standard for your academic life. It is almost impossible to have an active social life while making all As. But, despite the stress and the many sleepless nights, I have never met such great teachers nor great students in my life. Debakey, as I have heard from many graduates, is almost like a ticket into college- they recognize and respect this school because it is a challenging atmosphere. Debakey is different- it's as disciplined with the uniform as any private school with extra-curric. clubs as any NORMAL public school and above all, complete and utter strictness with academics. It really does prepare you.
For those who talk down on this school, you always have the choice to not attend or drop out. This school is for those who are determined to succeed in life and in a career path. It is a true college- preparatory school and you should only attend if you're serious. Don't go and complain. You should know what you're getting yourself into. It's not easy and it's not just a free ride. You have to work to get what you want and it just doesn't come easily. If you come here and do well, college is a lot more simple. I personally love the school; the rules sometime, no. But it's really a great school and can be right for you.
