Red Elementary School

My son is finishing his 1st year at Red and is a kindergarten student. After being placed into the Vanguard program when he was tested for G/T I was really excited and happy to see his young mind being challenged. His teacher is Ms. Sweeny and I couldn't ask for a better teacher. I can see all the progress in his reading, math and history. He tells me random facts he has learned in class all the time, and it makes me happy to know she's pushing him to do his best at all times.

Red is wonderful and the S.T.E.M. program is getting better every year. I have been a Red parent since 2007 and have been very happy overall. However, parent involvment overall could improve. No school is perfect but Red IS a great choice.

Great neighborhood school. My daughter has been through their Kindergarten and is looking forward to 1st Grade. I'm very impressed with their emphasis on reading. I would highly recommend this school.

Red is a great school. Within in her first year the new principal led the school to the States highest rating. Parents are welcome and encoraged to participate. The school has a wait list of student from around the city. If you don't like the school you should leave and let others on the wait list attend this Great School

My children have been attending Red for four years and I was extremely pleased with the school, however at this point I am ready to pull them out. I am not happy with the new principle, she is a networker and I don't feel the genuine concern for the kids and parents anymore. The parents are no longer allowed to go into the school which creates an environment in which the office staff is rude and condescending. I witnessed one of the office staff being so disrectful to a parent that wanted to carry her daughter's clothes to her classroom for a school camping trip. I couldn't believe that she would speak to her in that manner. Hopefully with the addition of the new assistant principle things will get better. I can see that he has a genuine interest in the children and their well-being.

Red is a fine school. I am impressed with the principal and staff. The magnet program is excellent. I am especially impressed by the computer teacher and newly equipped lab. My child has an educational opportunity that can not be found at many school.

I am extremely happy with the new principal at Red. The whole atmosphere at the school seems much more up beat. The teachers have been and continue to be great. Now that they have a principal to back them I think things will be good.

The new principle, Ms. Randle has made some excellent changes to the school. She is very approachable and has high expectations for her students and her staff.

Red Elementary is a work in progress. We left a wonderful school to attend Red, 'our neighborhood school' so our children could be with kids in the area...that wasn't the case. The parent participation is very minimal. The good teachers are NOT the norm. Not sure how it is a math, science and technology magnet school. My children watched movies in computer class and never learned how to keyboard, in 4 years. School was remodeled, but no additional science or computer equipment was added to make it a magnet. The crummy principal has been relocated...perhaps IF the next principal is any good, she will weed out the all too common bad seeds, beef up her magnet areas and higher quality teachers, THEN, maybe I would recommend Red in 3-4 years.

Red was a wonderful school wich my child thrived at. She had the most wonderful upbeat teacher Ms. Sweeney (a wonder wowoman) who manged to give each child the attention they diserved. The only reason I am sad to be leaving the area is because we will be leaving this school and its wonderful staff behind.

I have lived in the area for 20 years. I have a daughter that attended Red from preschool to 5th grade. We were at Red when the new principal came on board. Red has an excellent teaching staff and many of the good teachers have been there for 20 + years. Many parents and teachers do not like the principal because she is a micro-manager. The current involved parents and teachers are the ones that keep this school running smoothly. Principals can come and go. I would encourage parents to stand behind the teachers because they know what they are doing and are looking out for the best interest of the child.

I am taking my child out of this school because the teachers are so awful. We relocated to Houston and my daughter was only in school for two weeks and they gave her a report cards with Fs and the lowest score possible because she had not completed all their projects because she didn't start school in time! She had tested as gifted and did well in her other school. Her teachers never bothered to contact us with any concerns nor did they try to help her adjust to a new school. My daughter was ill and had to go for medical treatment and her math teacher made snide comments to her that she couldn't be bothered to show up at school. I am used to seeing schoolwork and tests sent home every Friday and this school does not show you anything! They have made child feel so unwelcome and humiliated!

The availability of music at Red is greatly lacking. The level of parent involvement at Red is restricted to what the principal, Ms. Rumrill, will allow. There used to be many parents at Red, greatly involved when my nieces and nephews went to Red. Ms. Huff was a superior principal that encouraged parent involvement. Ms. Rumrill does not like having more people around, other than her teachers and staff. There is so much more that could be done at this school. Those that don't want to join P.T.O. don't expect to be kept up with what's going on at the school. You get old news letters with misspelled words and wrong dates in them.

My son has just completed his first year at Red and my husband and I were very happy with his progress. He has done exceptional academically. I have been very happy with the activities through out the school. I think that our principal is doing a wonderful job keeping our children safe. There are precautions set to protect our children but not at the expense of making families feel unwelcome in visiting our school. I am very excited to see how my middle child will do when he begins his first year next semester. I have no doubt that the staff and teachers will do what they can to make sure his first experience with school is positive.

I love this school!!! My daughter is in Kindergarten and I absolutely love her teacher and so does she. I told her that there would be no school because of the holidays and she cried like I took her favorite toy away. I love this school, I love the office staff and I love the Principal!!! I have a 3 yr old that doesn't like to be separated from me that can't wait to go to school here. Mrs. Orr, Lourdes and Elena (office staff) make her feel so welcomed that she gets upset when it's time to leave. Red has a wonderfully inviting small family environment that makes every child and parent feel at home and the teachers make a special commitment to each and every child. I have three daughters and all three of them will attend this wonderful school.

Having two children who have attended Red Preschool over a five year period - I have been extremely please dwith the quality of care and education they have received. My eldest has just complete a year of kindergarten and his teacher was exceptional.

Red Pre-school is a fantastic resource to create your child's educational foundation. Red Elementary does not connect with the parents of the pre-school students to encourage them to attend K-5 there as well. Principal is not a strong fighter for the well-being of the school. School is being remodeled, when it was only 1 million in funding from being able to be rebuilt from the ground up. This school recently lost many kids due to redistricting. Consequently, some classes are very low ratio like 1:15 teacher:student. My child was pinpointed to be deficient in reading skill level and the school offered free tutorials which have been helpful. We are pleased, but not very impressed. Will give school another year to form a solid opinion.

My children have had some great teachers at this school, and I love the 'small community' feel of the place. Although a Math/Science/Technology magnet, I have not been impressed with the quality of these classes at all. With more parent involvement, this school could excel above others in the area.

It has been a joy to be a parent of 2 Red Elementary students for the past 5 years. I have son's in 1st and 4th grade and have been impressed with the enviroment and teaching staff. They are undergoing a remodeling project right know and will have a much improved campus by years end. The Principal has the right attitude about how education should be handled in the public school system. My only complaint is that due to budgetary reorganization they had to cut the music program. With this in mind, students attend lab classes every day and student Science, math and Computer Sciences regularly.
