Hi.we are planning to buy a home soon.ou budget is max $350k. We want to be in a good school dist considering kids, resale etc.we don't have kids yet but soon to have one.we narrowed our options to katy,sugarland,richmond,woodlands/spring.i am really very confused about the schools & school discts.i know that fortbend & katy ISDs are very good.what about klein, conroe isds? We liked many homes in The Woodlands, spring, conroe.not all schools are rated as exemplary.i agree exemplary schools are definitely the best, but homes in such locatins are quite expensive. We also liked couple of homes in richmond,tx where the school dist is lamar cisd. The school ratings were 9,10,8 for elementary, middle & high schools respectively.many of our friends told us that lamar cisd is not that good & warned not to consider.we like some locations with good school discts but the schools doesn't have good, great school ratings.this is putting me in lot of confusion.suggest me something.
What is the priority, school or school disct? What ratings are good for a good school? Like is 8,9 ok? What else to look for??
Hi Harry11, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.
If you don't have a house, and you don't have kids yet, it's a little tougher to give concrete advice. With a change in principal a school can change radically. Put another way, a great school today will cycle through every child in its walls before your kids are born and ready to attend--principals and teachers can change as well, and the parent support with those kids currently there will move forward toward middle and high schools. And trying to predict how good a high school or even a middle school will be is even harder. Or worse, they can change the boundaries before your kids attend.
As for whether an 8 is good or a 9 or 10 is better, remember those numbers reflect test scores only. So a school with a 10, can be a very affluent neighborhood where kids come in with every opportunity, and the teachers are mediocre, but the kids are easily taught. It says nothing about the art program, the computer program, or if they have an afterschool program.
An 8 or 9 could be a thriving school with a lot of enrichment programs, a few kids in an English-as-a-second-language program, and a PTO with a lot of heart.
In other words, you have to do a little bit of digging. The parent reviews listed on the school pages will tell you what people at the schools feel, and tell you all about the 'other stuff' that makes a school great.
If your budget is limited and locks you out of the 'best' schools, find a decent neighborhood, with a very good school district, and after you actually have kids, you can look to move up.
