I have never had an issue with any of the staff. My child has been a problem child at school and the administration has always gone above and beyond to work with my child and my family. The only thing I do not like is all of the extra activities at the school. Being a busy parent like I am sure we all are, it is difficult for me to make it to all the school functions, and it always disappoints my child. I hate to miss anything because I always want the teachers to know that I care. I wish that they had 2 open houses and only 2 extra parent/family nights. Its never that I do not want to go, its just that sometimes I can not go. This is a good school, however it is in a bad area, and I hope that they start enforcing no bullying rules.
My concern is in the playground, I guess the kids need more supervision. For few rotten apples they can't have fun. The rest is completely satisfactory. Thank you at all Teachers and staff.
It find it interesting to read the reviews written by parents who complain about everything from uniforms, to extra curricular activities, to the teachers who spend countless hours trying to help their students be successful. Perhaps they should try coming up to the school and volunteering for awhile. Maybe they should investigate why things are the way they are by keeping informed through the district web site or school board meetings. We work with limited funds, limited parental support and apathetic kids. Considering all of these hurdles I think Sheridan does a heck of a job educating your children. I could go on and on, but why bother. You can't pleasee everyone and there will always be someone out there that has something to complain about. You try doing what we do and working with what we have to work with and see if your feelings are the same.
I have to agree with the other submitter. The teachers do not go out of their way. They do only what is needed and that is it. I would have never moved here had I of known. Majority of the children speak spanish and there is no safeguards on the playground. When an incident happens, no one witnesses it. The Cutting in the pick up line and drop off is ridiculous as well as no crossing guards and parents dropping their kids in the middle of Keith harrow as well as picking them up in the middle of the street. Even the School buses Drive through the school zones at 35-40MPH. It is very dangerous there as well as lacking in the teaching department. The School prefers not to have Parent volunteers muchless parents in the school. You are made to feel very unwelcomed.
I am satisfied with Sheridan as far as huge schools go, but I worry about supervision because of a few things that my child has told me about on the playground. Rumor has it that our neighborhood will be rezoned into a new school in 2008 which might lessen the load on the staff at Sheridan. I was suprised at the workload and homework that Kindergarden children have at Sheridan. It takes a commitment from the parent to get the homework done, but my kindergardener is reading. The Kindergarden kids don't get many breaks or recesses either, but it will teach them that school is about work from day one.
I would have to disagree on the uniforms. It is much less expensive than goingout to purchase the brand names etc that the kids want. It teaches them at a young age that we are all the same on the inside and it doesnt matter what you wear...believe me, that is coming in Junior high and High school. I would rather my child get a firm foundation now. I do wish the Junior high did this to keep the wanna be gang-banger look out, but we will see. I do hear Sheridan will have less kids next year due to the addition of a new school, but then again we hear this every year. I hope the district can get this zoning under control and the numbers down to lower the stress on teachers and students. We have been very happy this year with teaching and teachers.
This school has a terrible stale, musty odor about it when you walk through. There are way to many kids and alot don't speak English. The kids have to wear school uniforms is ridiculous as its in effective and more cost on the parents (many low income in the area). School uniforms should be middle and/or high school only. It teaches the children nothing and puts the parents at a finanical disadvantage. If I had known previously (its very hard to locate on their web page) I would never had bought house in their school zone. The teachers my children have had have been great, but I worry from year to year because of the things I have been hearing. There is not much offered as far as extra curricular activities or at least I never hear much about them.
The school seems to be doing better and the teachers seem more caring than in the past. It seems the growth around the area is still a hinerance on many things. Hopefully by next year 08 this will mellow out with the addition of new schools and zoning. We are keeping a close eye on Sheridan and anticipating a move to KISD if things do not seem safe from elementary to high school.
My kindergartener's Meet the Teacher Night impressed me. We were concerned about how well the school would meet our expectations. Instead of making the students sit with the parents for the entire orientation, they were introduced to the teacher and led away to their classroomss! What a great idea! I was nervous at the idea being sprung on me, but it makes perfect sense! It gave him an opportunity to see his classroom and meet the other kids in his class. He knew what to expect the first day of school! He was excited the first day and shows only confidence each day. He is learning sign language as they cover the alphabet and also some basic Spanish. So many parents feel welcome to join their children for lunch, so an extra table was needed. Safety is a top priority. No one is allowed beyond the front office without a badge.
The teachers just teach and don't seem to go out of their way. Many people I know have left for homeschooling and private education, as we are apt to do as well.
