As a student at H. M. King, I found that it is an excellent school if a student chooses to take full advantages of the programs offered. I took Advanced Placement classes throughout my high school years, played multiple varsity sports, and participated in UIL academic competitions. The school and district administration is very supportive of students who take full advantage of the education offered to them. The school has been nationally recognized for its science department, and will be making a presentation at a national conference this year regarding its improvements. To any parents or students considering this school, I give the advice that if one wishes to receive a quality education, the education is there to receive.
I have had two children attend H. M. King. Like any public school it has it positives and it's negatives. The key is parental involvement to which the administration is always receptive. The principal is a no nonsense professional with a vision of what the school could be, anda plan for getting it there. What sets H.M. King apart is the extraordinary number of quality programs that add a depth and richness to the curriculum. A full range of athletics led by a young and enthusiastic Athletic director. A music program whose director is an institution in the school. A top of the line ag dept and automotive departments. The Army JROTC program which both of my children participated in was in a word extraordinary. The JROTC instructors are magnificent. Every year the program sponsors a trip to Europe. Last year alone four JROTC students graduated with four year scholarships.
Student motivation is low, parental involvement lacks, and there is little to no evidence that any money is used for upkeep or repair. I teach here and see that the necessary skills lack upon entrance to this school. Not sure if the middle school is teaching at all.
The registrar and front desk personnel are in serious need of customer service education. They are argumentative without being knowledgeable nor helpful. I will comment to the State Board of Education.
