I am very impressed with this school. The principal is attentive and makes every attempt to make you feel welcome. She is one of the few principals that knows children by name and they all come to give her hugs. This is very different from the previous school that we attended in LISD. Environment is a big factor in how a child will perceive learning. McAuliffe will give them a positive experience. After reviewing their test scores in comparison to our old school, I took advantage of LISD's open enrollment and switched schools immediately.
This school is far too dependent on technology, it's almost shocking. There is a lot of 'fun' activities for the students planned throughout the school year but there needs to be more 'balance' with a dedicated focus on academics - especially in grades 3-5. There is student "favoritism" that is the most alarming and those who volunteer their time through PTA and by being room mom's will find their kids favored by the principal, administration, and their homeroom teachers most. Sad but TRUE we lived it and listened to those around us complain about it as well.
Overall I love this school.... Great environment for children to grow and learn. Always instilling values that will hopefully impact the students throughout their life. From Great Expectations to respecting and sending off the beloved janitor and always making good choices. I am sometimes frustrated with how much the curriculum relies on technology..... Wish they would get back to the basics of teaching math and reading, perhaps break out the chalk and use the black board. Don't think it's necessary for the lower grades to have iPads or the higher grades to have so much access to their technology especially during recess. I want my children to be well rounded kids that can interact with humans!!! Wish they would focus more on the academics!!! I also feel that the stance on bullying isn't taken seriously but that is probably a LISD thing. I wish that kids that disrupt the class repeatedly would have stronger consequences so that the other kids can have a better learning environment.
We love McAuliffe. We moved here from Manhattan (where we did a mix of public and private school) and were not sure what to expect. I speak with the principal regularly, she is always available by phone or in person. The school was willing to do anything to help my son adjust and be challenged - since he came from a school with a different curriculum. The staff is amazing, my son had an exceptional teacher this year, the parents are extremely involved, and my son loves attending school there. It is a positive, upbeat, and warm place. We will not move away from this school!
We moved away from Mc Auliffe, and we miss it so much! I want to let people know that the prinicpal, staff, and teachers make great efforts to create a positive atmosphere and a great academic environment. The community is involved in this school to the point it feels like a large family. We live in an area now where the school does not have a program like Great Expectations to build values of respect and responsibility, and our child can feel it. Mc Auliffe teaches kids to be good people while not forgetting about academics. PTA members and even staff may show a bit of favoritism at times, I agree, but I found if you jump in and get to know everyone, all are good people who try to be fair. Miss this school!
I am sad to hear that you feel this way about our school. I know many of those PTA women and I am surprised to hear anyone say such things about any of them. I am sure that you have your reasons for feeling this way but you should know that the staff leadership does not choose the PTA leaders...they are voted on by families in a voting process. You may have legitimate frustrations on a personal level With some of the moms but it is unfair to label the entire staff and PTA with such ugliness. As one of those moms myself, I know that is not an accurate portrayal. I am sorry to hear that anyone feels this way though. Perhaps you should talk with someone on the board. I am sure that any one of us would be happy to help sort things out.
My portrayal is 100% accurate. Be very cautious about sending your children to this school.
I feel so fortunate that all three of my children have been able to attend school at McAuliffe. I couldn't be happier with their experience there. The principal is the BEST, the teachers are wonderful, and the office staff is helpful and friendly. They truly go above and beyond at this school. I really believe that they do everything in their power to nurture happy, conifdent kids.
We have been at McAuliffe for 8 years. Our last child moves on to middle school next year and our entire family will miss the staff, events and loving atmosphere & excellent learning environment McAuliffe has provided all these years. We have not once in our 8 years have had a teacher we were not thrilled with, nor have our children ever complained about their teachers!! Both kids have excelled at McAuliffe and we are forever thankful for their hard work and dedication to making McAuliffe a great place to learn but also a fun place to go to school!!!
McAuliffe is an amazing school. We have great students who know what it means to work hard. We have great teachers who care about the overall child, and we have an excellent community base with wonderful, supportive parents. I can't imagine being anywhere else. From Chili Cook-off to community service to clubs for every student, I really think McAuliffe is a great place not only for students, but also for families. I know we aren't perfect, but I do believe that we will love the kids, provide a safe environment for them, and teach kids to work hard and play hard.
I have had children in this school since 2003. I have loved every teacher each of my children have had. I have never had a problem with communication. The principal at McAuliffe goes above and beyond for the school. If my kids see her outside of school, she always takes the time to say "hello." They plan so many fun activities, from Chili Cook-Off to movie nights, my kids love them all. She's always coming up with new ideas, I truly wonder if she ever gets a full nights' rest. The librarian at McAuliffe gets the kids so excited to read. I have seen some of the classes she has taught in the library & she is amazing with the kids. It is a wonderful school & I am proud to have my children go there.
McAuliffe Elementary has the best program in LISD and work hard to bring the grades of each child up. The state and district have created a number of rules which hinder the teachers from doing what is best for the individual child but this school has a proactive approach to meet each childs needs. Keep up the good work.
The principal at McAuliffe is exceptional, with excellent communication skills w/parents when needed. The staff was not nearly as good at communicating with the parents, I found out some grades weren't where they ought to be almost too late - even after I requested meetings several ways and several times. The habit of making parents attend PTA meetings b/c they're waiting for a child's performance was irritating at best. Overall though, staff could improve but very good.
Interesting, in resonse to another post, at the McAuliffe Elementary where my children go, the grades are online, available anytime and are numeric beginning in 1st grade. (Our kinder doesn't even use Y/N.) The teachers also send home a special report at least 3 times a year that tell the reading level. We also get report cards every 6 weeks and 3 week progress reports if students are below 75. Parents have so many opportunities to communicate with the teachers regarding their child's progress. I just wanted to clarify. I am sure there are numerous McAuliffe Elementary Schools.
This is an excellent school. Grades are numerical and found online. They are posted and available regularly. I receive an email if the grades fall below a 90. Teachers are excellent. They love the students and work hard with each child. I have had other children go through McAuliffe, and I am continually impressed with the constant quest for improvement made by the staff. Great school. No one is perfect, but this place tries awfully hard.
McAuliffe is a wonderful school! The Principal leadership is exceptional. It's a positive and happy place to be. The teachers my children have had were great! They have been able to extract greatness from my children. I always want kind teachers who have high expectations. My daughter's 2nd grade teacher had very high expectations of the children and her expectations were met by each child in the class. She had the children writing a lot of stories, learning correct sentence structure and encouraged reading outside of class. The only downside to the reading is that there is no 'classic literature' required in the classes. Science class has replaced Spanish this year. Leap gives the added value a private school would give children. One other minus is that little parental involvement is desired in grades 3-5. Overall, it is a great school with a wonderful principal, great staff and great children.
Great school, great teachers and great students. Parents are involved and supportive. This is a great place have a child. High academics with an exciting atmosphere.
Lots of parent involvement. Strong PTA. Clean, safe school. Teachers are a bit spoiled because of the high level of parent volunteerism; they tend to want perfection over creativity. There is a program for kids who are more advanced - LEAP which was very helpful for kids who need more challenges. Lots of programs available to students. Good quality academics, heavy on discipline.
McAuliffe has been a great school for us. From first grade, students have spanish, art, PE, and music in addition to the basics. There is tremendous parental involvement. Highland Village is a very community and family oriented area. Each classroom reflects a unique teacher personality. There are 4 or 5 classes per grade. Currently, you cannot request a particular teacher. However, each year your child's current teacher is involved in determining who their teacher will be the next year. In addition to school activities, there are several clubs and other after school opportunities for students to chose from.
