We are happy with the school so far. My son's kindergarten teacher Ms. Corfield has been doing an excellent job at no only getting within two weeks our son to finally learn his ABC's and counting, but to read as well. She sends out regular progress reports as well as schedules meetings to involve us in his learning. We are highly impressed at the pace that the school is teaching our son. If I were to complain about anything is the fact that their conduct is included into their academic grade. In our sons case, he never went to preschool or had long periods of daily interaction with other children was so happy to be around other kids so in line he would touch other kids (point demerit), accidently step on toes in line (point demerit) not bad, except 0-1 is an A, 2-3 B, so if a child like ours despite their impressive learning in a short time, will only have a C (4-5) or a D (6 marks or more) in the week.
I love this school. I don't get the poor reviews. The only thing I would complain about is the PARENTS! They are NOT involved enough! The crossing guard yells at the kids because they jaywalk in front of the school because the parents drop them off in the street. I have 3 children who have either attended this school or are there now. Two of them are in special education and the other one has needed extra services and I have never had a problem with any of the teachers or the principal. Don't blame the teachers or the staff for the problems with some of these kids. There is only so much they can do. Parents are the children't first teachers!
My son attended K-2 & was in LEAP. Sad we had to move. My son was happy, safe & always supervised. Great education; I was pleasantly surprised by lessons, they were above grade level & learned to care about his work. Teachers tried to teach at child's level...I witnessed their strides 1st hand. They challenged my son to do more, to read to K students & was given chances to earn extra PE time for good grades/behavior. Talking to the (female) principals was difficult; they're brash w/ parents & teachers. The crossing guard yells at kids & PARENTS and cops pull speeders over in the drop off lane, which made my son late multiple times. *Crossing guard and cops are both police dept issues though. PTA is filled with caring Moms, that just need more creative ideas. The DOGS program (Dads of Great Students) was added in '12. The presence was noticed immediately at field trips, events & in the drop off/pick up lane and provided a positive male presence. There are lots of speakers to discuss health, fire safety, bullying, etc and parents were always welcome. If you want to be an involved parent, there ARE opportunities. The '5' rating is NOT a true reflection of Southridge. We loved it!
We have a second grader and are very happy with the school. She is in the LEAP (T&G) program and sometimes can be socially anxious, but the teachers have really been phenomenal. Don't get me wrong, the PTA meetings are terrible, but it's not the school that makes them terrible, it's the parents. It would be hard for any school to try to "fix" rude and nasty adults.
We moved from Birdville ISD to Lewisville and are so happy with the move. We have two children at Southridge and they are both excelling both academically and emotionally. Our son's special needs are being addressed proactively and we couldn't be happier with the personalized care and attention he receives. We are very happy with the amount of timely and thorough communication we receive from the school, and the teachers and staff have been wonderful. The only reason I didn't give Southridge 5 stars is the lack of "extras" (field trips, a more robust PTA program, etc.). But academically and socially, it has been wonderful for my children.
Outward appearances make the school look better than it is, being a recognized campus means a lot to the staff. The schools is over crowded. There are unrealistic expectations of the younger grades. the Assistant Principal and Counselor are wonderful, hence why a lower rating was not given. The Principal is difficult to talk with and forgets that she is not the ultimate boss of how the children are treated, that is the parents job to make the more important decisions. Many of the teachers have lost heir sense of humor and do not appreciate a sense of humor in a young child. We as a family have had a rotten year much of it to do with the policies in place at this school. We are moving to a different school district & would live in our car to get out of South ridge.
As a teacher at Southridge I enjoy working with such a talented faculty and staff. I am very discouraged with the parents of the students I teach. They are not involved in the school or with their children's education. They often don't even show up for teacher conferences. I do enjoy the students and despite their parents, they are teachable. It's the very talented faculty and staff that make Southridge an exemplary school!
The school has been great. I feel very confident that my child is safe and getting a great education. His teacher is wonderful.
We have two children in this school and like a lot of schools, I think your experience varies depending on the teacher. We've had 2 excellent teachers, 2 horrible teachers, and 1 that was okay, but not great. Both my children have great teachers this year, so we're lucky. PTA is poor given what appears to be a lack of parent involvement and no budget (i.e., lack of parents). The counselor is awesome, but we have mixed feelings about the principal. My wife and I put our house up for sale last year specifically to move to a different school, but took it off due to the market. We are putting it back on the market in the spring and hope to be moved by the summer. We would not recommend this school.
The teachers & staff are great, my children enjoy this school and all it offers. I love the effort and time they take to help those that need that extra push and the results have been proven to go above and beyond any other school district that we have attended.
My child attends southridge and the children that are not succeding are not given my attention as needed. The ones that are making the honor roll, of course their parents will have nice comments because they dont interact academically with the teachers as we do, the ones who have the children who are struggling. I feel that if you helped a child all the way to the 3rd weeks then let them go and then rapidly see a drop in grades that should have been the first point of contact with the parents of the student instead of the 5th weeks. I am a parent that is very involved academicaly and discipline wise and I would have liked to be notified sooner. I think that the teacher is genuinly nice, but isnt equipped to deal with those that are struggling with the academics.
There are some fantastic teachers here for example the 4th grade teacher- Mrs. Hayes she's great. Other than that there are no extra act. the PTA is terrible the atmosphere is terrible and the kids are known to curse and get into fights. :| It's a shame.
from my experience, their kindergarten classes are two over crowded, and the teachers do not have enough experience with young children.
My kids came to Southridge from Grand Prairie schools. My son and my daughter were definatly having problems staying ahead. The teachers, couns., and principal are awesome! I can't say it enough! I have nothing to say but great things to say about the caring faculty! One thing that was a great change was that they really show how much they care about student safety. If your kid is going into the 3rd grade pray that they get Mrs. Beekman! She is wonderful and goes above and beyond for her kids! She totally turned my daughter around! The only complaint that I have is that my kids have to change schools due to they are no longer in Southridge's school district!
