Lufkin High School is a pretty good school although there seems to be a rise in gangs and gang fights. My 11th grader is excelling in Varsity Choir as well as Chamber Choir. His grades are great. I have one child also in Middle school and I have major problems with that school. It seems to me that some of the teachers are displaying reverse discrimination, drugs are too easily accessible, and supervision of the children is minimal. They can come and go from the school without the parents or teachers being aware of it.
We are 4 years into this district. My child is an 11th grader. I consider him an average student. He brings home no homework for last 2 years and makes average grades, mostly A's & B's. He never studies for tests. I am hesitate to recommend this area for the best possible education available.
I have two children at Lufkin High School. I have no complaints about the overall education. The English department is excellent. History/social studies fair. Biology is my personal pet peeve, but you cannot win them all. New leadership last year. The teachers like him. The kids are slow to trust. He had a tough act to follow. He needs to work on it. extracirricular is great. This school has a nitch for everyome. My children are getting a good education directly related to the AP classes they take. I see lots of parents in lots of areas - band, football, soccer, drill team, cheer, UIL, Debate...It's big, but find your niche. excellent melting pot.
Lufkin High School is a wonderful school. I love my job and have for the past few years. I have never had to deal with any 'political' issues in the regular ed. classrooms. Every teacher supports sports involvement and each students' involvement in school activities. There is team effort and unity amongst the staff. The fine arts department is one of the best in East Texas and students that attend here will be ready for college level competition. There is no PTA in the H.S. setting.
Programs are excellent... choir and the arts could use a little more funding, actually a whole lot more. Parental involvment is hard to see but noticable.. Mr. Knight the prinipal is leaving but he rocked so hard... The other principals need to be checked out.. the ones that have been there for a while... Mr. Mahan does a great job.. although Mr. Bennett is new no student rumors have risen up. The teachers are the best- all of them love teaching and its easy to see... although students make it hard they persevere... thats noteable..
I have two daughters at this school and am very impressed with the selection of classes offered for students, the students satisfaction with (even bragging) about the opportunities presented, the excellent teachers they've had, the willingness of the school to help with any problem they encounter. My kids would move out before they left this school, as much as they love it, at 16 and seventeen. They've learned French, Spanish, done great in debate and student council, and I'm just happy to have a school they love and Drivers Ed over with. And Boston, of course. I've never seen kids as actively involved in any school as mine are at Lufkin High, and it keeps them out of trouble. The Drivers Ed teacher has been bragged on by five parents I know as excellent, with students deathly afraid of driving, and my daughters.
I am pleased with the education that my child receives from this school. The teachers are up to snuff. The school is diverse in all areas, and the environment is welcoming. I couldn't have picked a better place for my child to attend school.
