Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary is an environment that I am honored to work in as well as the parent of a child who attends here. The students on this campus are loved, cared for and academically challenged to reach their full potential. So blessed that I am a teacher here.

We have two children going to this school. We have not been happy and have been looking to get transfered out. I have even thought to home school till other arrangements can be made. My children's safety and well being has been a huge concerne at this campus. Don't get me wrong there are some great aspects but none out way the risk for us.

MJS is a fabulous school. The teachers are very involved and care deeply for the students. The various school programs are great and the parent/family involvement is fantastic as well. Students are well rounded and seem very happy as a whole.

Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary is a great, safe place to drop my children off each day. The principal knows what is going on in each classroom and does what it takes to extend greetings to parents. The teachers obviously go above and beyond their call of duty for our students. The changes have not been because of principals changing but because of the demographics of the community. It should be a focus of each parent to be involved in their child's education...you only get one chance. I appreciate all of the staff at Mary Jo Sheppard.

MJS is a great school so far (we have been there three years). The teachers we have had so far have all been more than happy to answer any and all questions/concerns I have had. Dr King holds parent panel meetings to answer any and all questions parents have covering many different topics/subjects. She also responds to email promptly when necessary. I am pleased with the level of information and tools the children have at their disposal to help them learn and retain the knowledge taught in the classroom. We are so thankful for these teachers/staff! Great school.

Parent Involvement is exceptional at this campus. The PTA is extremely active and the Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) has a high participation rate. We had 96 dads to attend Bring Your Dad to School at the end of September 2012. Parents and grandparents are on campus daily and are actively participating by helping the teachers and students. The students LOVE having their parents (and other parents) here to work with them in small group learning activities. This is very much a "community" school where everyone pitches in to make it the best that it can be. I am proud to be the principal of Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary. This year we started having daily intervention time (for accelerated instruction during the school day based on the needs of the individual student) and "Families" (like Ron Clark Academy) for every student and staff member. Our staff, parents, and community make Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary a great place to learn!

This school has been wonderful.. Great teachers. Only one problem with one teacher that was only there a short while. This was not handled well at all. Now that the old principal is gone everything has changed. Not for the better. He was great with the parents and students. The new principle is not parent friendly. Has changed so many things that worked great before. I hope this does not affect parents volunteering at the school. I wish the old principle good luck with his new adventures. And hope for the best for our school.

This is a very good school. Mr. Mann's (principal) oversees the Kinder crosswalk. He waves & says hi when you walk down the halls. He personally answers emails quickly. He sets a good vibe for the school. There are MANY great teachers here too, but l think whatever constitutes GREAT in your eyes will vary with whatever your child's learning style is. Overall, we have been pleased. Our MJS partnership began w/ Mrs. Prince (kinder) who is now the libriarian. She is wonderful. I DO think that parent involvement seems to have dropped somewhat since school bounderies were changed. Many former MJS kids now go to Nancy Neal. PTA could use some fresh ideas, but that involves all of us. Any complaints cannot be pinned solely on those that hold PTA positions. This school also offers Destination Imagination (an awesome program). It's amazing to me that most other elementary schools don't. Private school is in our future after we leave MJS because we don't particularly like the lack of flexibilty that public schools have (legislature/red tape/issues with standardized testing). However, this is no way reflects MJS. They are doing the very best they can in the midst of it all.

My child has attended MJS for 2 years we could not be happier. The prinicpal acts as the crossing guard for students being dropped off at the kinder entrance (cafeteria) and knows everyone. The Dads Of Great Students group is highly involved- they also take turns as the crossing guard for children coming from neighborhood behind the school. Parent involvement is amazing. I.E. field trip this year an average of 11 parents per class showed for our grade level. This is a wonderful school, and I believe it's success is based on the hard work and care of it's staff (many of who are practicing Christians). It is reassuring that the values I teach my child are being reinforced in school and not underminded.

I believe this school could do better. My son started there in kindergarten. We have faced some issues that I think were not fairly addressed by the principal. It is sad that not all students get the same treatment. One thing I can say is that some of the teachers really care about the success of the students and there are some that really do not take the time to know the students for themselves. I honestly believe Mr. Manns have no clue of this type of behavior. I was also on the PTA Board and it was clear to me that I was not welcome there. Overall, the curriculim there is great, however some of the teachers need to find jobs that they have a passion for and not do it for the paycheck. They make the whole school look bad to the parents.

I have taught at MJS since its opening. I love it there and am fortunate to be working under Mr. Manns' leadership. The staff, administration, and other employees work well together to create a positive environment for the students there.

I have a daughter exiting 3rd grade who has attended MJS since it's opening. I could not be more pleased with our experiences here! The principal and staff are very 'hands on', and are attentive to both student and parent concerns and needs. Also, something that is very important to our family, a large majority of the staff are very vocal Christians, and we love that about them, knowing they give my child the same foundation in school that we promote at home is a bonus!

My daughter will be in 3rd grade next year. When she started kindergarten was when the school first opened. We have never been dissappointed once since she has been there and are very sad it only goes to 4th grade. The leadership of the school is impeccable. The Sheppard Colts will always have a special place in our hearts!

Wonderful school!!!I have three children that attend this school. I am involved with various activities and a member of the PTA. This school has great teachers and staff who really care about your child and their learning experience. They strive to incorporate new ways of teaching and learning. The principal is very involved with the students and is very open to finding creative ways to motivate and help his students achieve their best!!!!I give this school an A+..

Mary Jo Sheppard is an outstanding school. I've had three children go there with various needs and we've been very pleased. Mr. Manns is doing an outstanding job. He is visible always out directing traffic. :) We've also had some outstanding teachers there as well.

My son is in 3rd grade. We came from a private school to Mary Jo Sheppard. We have really enjoyed this year and love all the extra programs. The teachers and staff have been very caring and helpful.
