The new principal has made a huge impact and is super engaged in the success of the students.
My son attended Vega for kindergarten and 1st grade. The principal and vice principal were fantastically involved and caring. We didn't care for his kindergarten experience after realizing that his teacher was more interested in having us medicate him for ADD than she was in communicating with us what we could do to help him. His 1st grade teacher was extremely thoughtful and attentive, giving him additional time before and after school. She was so patient and giving and we genuinely appreciated her efforts but after some additional tested to rule out other possible causes for his being behind, we were told in a meeting we needed to have him evaluated for ADD. In hind sight, I believe we enrolled him too soon and should have held him out for a year but due to No Child Left Behind, we were told holding him back would not be beneficial for him (them?). We ended up home schooling this past year and he has excelled tremendously. ADD has not been an issue and I'm grateful we did it. In the end, I believe the school itself is pretty good although I was alarmed at the continuous insistence that we throw a pill at the problem and the school lunches are to be avoided at all costs.
Mr. Forsyth is an AMAZING principal, his staff is great too. A HUGE improvement since the old principal left. He is engaged, approachable and the kids love him. Teachers are awesome, friendly to parents - many facebook friend parents in their class and build relationships that are strong. My disappointment is more with the district. This past year they brought in ESL classes from around the district which overcrowded our school - 5th grade in portables. This coming year 13-14 will add even more ESL. Parent envolvement is low, funds are low and playground is pathetic. PTA is a few stay at home moms making all the decisions and spending seems frivilous (when our kids need better playgrounds versus a PTA board trip to Austin conventions). The school is now a Title One - over 40% are on free or reduced lunch. This is significantly impacting the feel, disipline issues and demographs. Selling to move out of district...will greatly miss Essential 55 which has been a very positive way to focus on character..and will miss staff, teachers and our friends we have had there since kinder several years ago.
This has been my child's first year at Vega, and so far we have been very pleased. The staff has been very friendly and receptive. They work on the Essential 55, which are life skills like saying "Yes, Ma'am or No, Sir", looking people in the eye when you speak with them, holding doors for people, etc. These are things that, unfortunately, many kids are r not taught at home. The All-Star Jam pep-rallys are fun and well organized. The school also seems to be stepping up efforts to improve student diet by asking parents not to send candy and junk to parties and instead send pencils or other non-edible things. I am a teacher myself at another school, and from what I see, from the outside, this campus is well run and on the right track. Very pleased!
This year Vega has a new principal. He is amazing and has turned this school around. The staff IS amazing. My child is in third grade and has been enrolled since kinder. His second grade teachers were outstanding. This is an example of a school that headed in the right direction!
Teachers seem focused on moving children on to the next grade level rather than truly focusing on improving student's performance, rather than simply ensuring he "makes it through". My child has average grades, and his teachers have communicated to me where he can improve (a plus), but he has not thrived the way I think he could had he attended a nearby elementary as my older child did. Office staff and nurse are super friendly; nothing but great things to say about them. But the downsides-- principal is alarmingly fake and does not truly care about the individual students she is responsible for. She cares about the grade the school receives from the state, and that is it. I agree, asst. principal is fantastic and involved and should be offered the position. The lunches are disgusting and we send his lunch to ensure he'll actually eat. The teachers and volunteers in cafeteria are like drill sergeants and my child is not a badly behaved student. Maybe I'm crazy for expecting my child to be engaged in a fun learning environment that focuses on individual, educational growth in a Tx public school, but I know it is possible from past experience- just not the reality at Vega.
I had heard lots of things regarding Vega before my daughter started school there. Everything I heard was incorrect. The front staff has always been extremely kind with great customer service. I am a Kindergarten mom and so I ask a ton of questions and they are always eager to help and answer my questions. The teachers are great and use enough discipline to keep everything running smoothly without being overbearing and rude to the kids. I am impressed with the curriculum they are covering and overall, very pleased with Vega. The principal and Assistant Principal are wonderful. I think if you truly get involved with your child's school, then you really learn what the school is all about. Vega cares about the kids and offer programs not available at other schools.
My kids have been going here for 3-4 years now. I am thinking of moving out of this school zone because of this school. Think twice before moving to this school zoned area. I have a full post on yahoo when you look up this school, this stie did not allow room for what needs to be said.
My Daughter is a current Vega Student, we are taking the summer months to list and sell our house so that we can be rid of this school. The sole emphasis is placed on preparing for the tests. The lunch program is nauseating, the extracurricular programs are poorly thought out. The school and adjoining park has developed a very 'thuggish' atmosphere with which the administration and police seem unconcerned. Students with behavioral problems are coddled and tolerated at the expense of good students. Think twice before enrolling.
My children have been here for 3 years. I loved this school. The teachers were wonderful. The support staff was great also. Its a shame we had to move. I couldn't ask for a better school. They did a lot of fun after school activities. The picnic in the park was lots of fun. They all star celebrations were great with the No Mam band playing. The kids loved it! My daughter learned so much being here. Her grades went up as well. Im gonna miss VEGA!
The school was not so great, but I don't blame teachers. I blame the school system in general and the 'No Child Left Behind Act' which happens to leave all children behind and only sounds good. I removed my children and placed them in home school. Parents should really stop looking at the smiles on the teacher's faces and enquire about the curriculum.
Vega Elementary is a great place to work and have my child attend. He is nurtured by an outstanding staff that takes the time to challenge him and accent the positives he possesses.
The school is excellent. The teachers and principal really take the time to get to know the students as well as the parents. The foundation the children receive is solid and will stand throughout the childs education.
I have ben very please with Vega. The teachers all appear excited and eager for the children to learn. They are very responsive to parent questions and concerns. The principal is warm and concerned about the children's academic and social success.
Terrible School. The playground was only made for kindergarten. The children either get too cold or too hot in the portables. The pickup and drop-off line is too slow because it is being run by children and a lot of people driving suv's drive dangerously. The front office person can't work the telephone well.
I am a parent and class size and community are important to me. Vega has small class size about 20 students per teacher and class mother. Great about parents participation w/background check. Great about parent teacher conferences and involvement by parents. Provide lots of information about activities and class projects. Loved the school and the McKinney area and the school.
We were only in McKinney for a year, but I truly enjoyed Vega Elementary and all of its staff. My children were in 3rd, and 5th grades and they also had a great year. The teachers kept me well informed throughout the year and provided extra help whenever needed.
The student ratio is excellent. My child is able to get the attention that she needs one on one. She gets help in area that she is behind in. The principal is very helpful and friendly.
The new principal is great. She is very helpful and trying. She is working to improve the school.
New principal doesn't know what is going on. Front office staff rude. Staff loses childrens lunches and belongings dropped off by parents. The information in the weekly newsletter is wrong 50% of the time with improper dates and formatting awful. A few teachers are rude to the children, fail to teach the children proper paper writing skills to take to next level. Lunches are the same every other week. Activities are poorly planned and over charging parents. Friviolous with funds raised. Horrible drop-off and pick-up system. Have issues with parents who want to give their children a nutrious snacks to eat during TAKS testing instead of eating junk food. Force children to say the pledge. When children are late to school they stop only a few while letting others go. Playground is too small. School needs lots of improving. Quality went down when new principal came.
