Velasquez Elementary is a school that is only concerned about their status ranking. I have two children, nieces and nephews who attend Velasquez and are terrified of the principal. We have had incidents that occur ed at the school that were not reported to us parents. We found out through our kids. It is definately not a nurturing place for kids. I agree that the staff, beginning with the principal, would greatly benefit from continuing education on disciplinary strategies. Screaming is not a way of disciplining children.
Velasquez, is a wonderful school. I have 2 granddaughters who attend and could not be more satisfied in the teaching staff. My little kindergarten has learned so much with her wonderful teacher, Mrs Hlavaty. She has accomplished so much this year. And also my 3rd grader. Wonderful principal, who really cares about her children and their accomplishments. As Mrs Dow said those are her children when they are at school. Thank You to all the staff. Doing a wonderful Job!!!!!
I havethree children enrolled in their 3rd year in attendence at Velasquez. They are currently in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades. They may stress TAKS testing, but with the funding that rides on it due to the constraints of the No Child Left Behind initiative, who would'nt? I have found the school to be very responsive to the needs of my children, and my 2nd grader in particular. This year we requested that he be moved to a differnet class, and he was, and promptly. I call that a nuturing response.
Velasquez is a good school. The teachers are very caring and well equipped to teach our children. If you disagree you do have the option of homeschooling or private school. My children have a lot of fun and love their teachers. As for the counselor, Mrs. Roberts, I see her all the time and in fact have spoken with her on occasion concerning my children. She is wonderful with the kids. Good job Velasquez!
I am totaly agree with you. The second semester of the school they do nothing but practice tests
The staff is comprised of many ill-equipped teachers who would greatly benefit from continuing education classes focused on student diversity, learning strategies and basic educational psycholgy. In addition, Velasquez teachers and administration are overly focused on TAKS scores and the school's ranking as a result of those scores. This school is not a place to send a child if you want he or she to be nurtured, especially if you want your child to be an active participant in their learning and/or if your child has learning differences. Furthermore, a word about the counselor: is there one at Velasquez?
