My family is new to the community and my son has been enrolled for the entire school year. His teacher is very patient and uses positive reinforcement consistently. She is able to independently find resolutions to typical first grade issues involving my son, which is very important for any working parent. When my son did have an issue that resulted in the teacher calling me mid-day, she was still very positive and proactive about finding solutions to prevent any issues in the future. She also provided educational apps for his iPad that has improved both reading and math grades.

My daughter has been going here since Kindergarten and she has really enjoyed this school. I think that the teachers are great and are involved with the students. As far as the front office goes yes there are a few office staff that don't make the atmosphere inviting but whats more important to me is my daughter education verse someone who has an attitude that I don't deal with on an everyday bases. Overall I love the school and I see my daughter enjoys going to this school! I love the communication they have. Email is the best!

Our experience with this school was terrible. My son entered into this school in first grade. Although his teacher was kind, she was not engaged in his learning. I asked for updates on his behavior and school work repeatedly and the only communication that was sent home was a folder that has smiley/frown faces in it. No explanation if there was a frown face. I had no idea what he had done and therefore no idea how to correct it. When I finally got in touch with her, she said he was just being a kid. He was afraid every day to come home Bc he was getting in trouble... Over being a kid. My daughter entered this school in kinder. She was placed into an overflow kinder class and more than 6 weeks into the semester she still did not have a permanent teacher and was only doing "busy work" every single day. She was reading already and the teacher had no idea because she was just a sub. She should have been tested or moved into a different class, but wasn't because she didn't even have a teacher. She was also bullied daily on the bus and on the playground and nobody was concerned when I tried to get her some help. We have now pulled both of them out of this school and are homeschooling.

The person that put the review up on June 08, 2014 is definitely right about the atmosphere. The front office is so uninviting. The front office staff in my opinion are a little rude. Each person I ve encountered has had a dry attitude.... I would like to take a camera and voice recorder in with me so anyone reading this can get the idea of a typical encounter, then these reviews would not just be written reviews but an actual posting put on YouTube for everyone to see. The only thing I can say about them is horrible attitudes. 1/15/2015

Coming into the area 3 years ago, we had high hopes of LCISD. We had heard so many great things about the district, their long term goals and the teachers. At this point, we are very disappointed in our experience at Cora Thomas. First and foremost, the lack of communication from school to home unacceptable. Teachers often complain that there is not enough parent involvement, yet at this school, when you try to be involved, you are quickly shut down. The receptionist is not very welcoming nor are the teachers or administration. When you have parents and grandparents who wish to be involved in their child's learning experience, you should put forth the effort to encourage it, not dismiss it as a problem. My students struggles began in first grade and after asking for tutorials, extra work to be sent home, lists of tutors for the district, etc, we got nothing. When you have a student who is with you ALL day and they have C's and D's in first and second grade, yet you don't send anything home for them to work on, that seems to be a real problem. Oh wait, according to the counselor and reading recovery teacher, that's "average" for their school. So it's OK? REALLY LCISD???

I was not impressed with this school. This was my kids' first year attending and if I had a code it would be their last. There is absolutely no communication with parents. They deal with everyone like they know school policies and procedures and its been like that since the orientation day. We were not only new to this school but new to the state and my children felt out of place the entire school year. Even when my son was tested for the gifted program the only communication I received was that he was accepted. I had to investigate on the website and figure out how he was even selected for this testing. I spoke with the assistant principle regarding a bus referral my son was given in error and she assured me she would handle it but it is still showing on his record. I requested a parent teacher conference with my son's teacher Ms. Vasquez back in January and never received anything but empty promises. Even the kindergarten graduation was disorganized, parents were setting up tables for themselves. Ms. Fernandez was a wonderful teacher, very respectful of all of our wishes and a great communicator. If school of choice was available my kids would not return to this school.

Cora Thomas Elementary School is the BEST. The teachers are friendly and love the kids. They all go out of their way to keep parents informed and help the kids to do their best.

Not even a month and already having issues with my daughter's first grade teacher, eventually doesn t want to help my daughter it seems she has trouble helping my daughter learn English. I do understand it s a bit stressful but my daughter is a fast learner that I m aware of. My daughter in HISD was dominated GIFTED & TALENTED and owns a trophy which I m such no kid in her class has one from school yet. I m very proud of my daughter as she puts so much effort in learning that I m sure because once she gets home after school we spent all evening till 8:30p reading and worksheets. My daughter deserves a better teacher than what she has now. My opinion.

My son is nearing the end of his kindergarten year and I have to say that this year has been amazing at Cora Thomas Elementary! He has a great teacher who is extremely patient and understanding and even took her time and thought about what my son will require for next year in his ARD meeting (my son has high functioning autism). I have been told by several parents who have children with special needs that most teachers (at their children's schools-not this one) just want to blow through the meeting without really stopping to think about what the child requires, but with my son's teacher I could tell that she was pausing to think about my son's needs and really cares about what will be best for him next year. I am very happy with his teacher this year and the school overall. Everyone there from the principals to the kindergarten teacher to the super friendly PE coach are all extremely nice and really care about the kids. This is a great school!!
