Greatly disappointed in the help that the administration gave to my family during our time with Calvary. Went to them numerous times regarding a certain teacher to try to work out issues to only be told that this was an isolated case. We later found out that over half of the other parents in our class complained about the same teacher, but still no action was taken. It is very sad when you trust a school with your children and you leave frustrated that they have only money on their minds.
Calvary is a GREAT school! Yes, there will be homework, but not four hours of it. And from my experience, the teachers and staff are always willing to work with any child that needs help. They even gave my child their home and cell phone numbers to call if they have questions, and has never been turned away or refused help. They do hold my child accountable for work and behavior, and the students are encouraged to solve problems and think for themselves. This curriculum is accelerated, which may not be appropriate for everyone, but it was just what my child needed. We are certainly blessed to be part of this wonderful school!
I believe there are some parents who want the school to "take care" of their children. Calvary holds them accountable. I love that for my children. I want them to become independent thinkers and accountable for their learning. I can guarantee that is what they have received from this great school. It has accelerated curriculum, God-centered spirit, helpful teachers, and loving environment. We are grateful to be here!
Prior to my post, I read once again the reviews below and noticed that there was a large skip in time between reviews. I have lived in Richmond since 1983 and Calvary has always been highly regarded as a good school with excellent results. I visited this school with my daughter in 2010 before she made her decision to send her children there. It was impressive. However, reality is way different. Homework is a min. of four hours a night for all grades cutting into any attempt of relaxing or extracurricular activities. Scores are done on a HUGE curve and little attempt is done by a teacher to assist a child to truly learn the lesson. Not all the teachers are this way but majority does just give homework and call it a day. Too bad, we thought this was the answer to education until college. Even pulled the children out and took a loss of tuition $$. Went through proper channels to no avail. Heard others did the same or will for next year.
I have friends whose children have attended this school over the years and I believe they have an excellent curriculum. There is a high level of expectations from student's performance, and I believe the kids come out well-prepared to meet life's challenges.
As a parent, I am glad that I have found a place where my child loves to go to school and is eager to learn. As a public school administrator, I am saddened that I have to pay for my child to get this type of high quality education that should be afforded to all. My son performs well above his same aged peers. Every school has its issues because people are imperfect and we make mistakes, but if you want your child to get a rigorous education where they are loved and respected, this is the place to be.
This is a wonderful school. I spent 17 years working in public school before I found this little jewel. High academic program, great teachers and kids. Students are taught well above grade level. Outstanding leadership. Has a waiting list in some grades.
Calvary has very high expectations for its students and an accelerated curriculum. The teachers really care about the students and work very hard to help them achieve. My child has learned so much in one year and can't wait to return next year.
Calvary is only as strong as its teaching staff. Parents will be very disappointed if expecting excellence and professionalism from teachers.
I attended Calvary. Both my kids have attended. It has provided a safe, Christian environment for 50 years and counting. The present director has over 30 years of experience in education and leadership. The teachers and staff are quality individuals that are able to educate and help kids learn to enjoy learning.
