Despite economic disadvantages and proximity to the border, students have performed fairly high on the TAKS tests. Schools have demonstrated progress on a year to year basis.

The students are provided with good quality instruction and although there is a few behavior problems, the administration and staff are doing a great job.

I am a grad from this school. My children first attended elementary schools then we moved to a 'better school'. If anyone thinks that favortism is only in this school they should try other schools. One was branded for coming from Rio, the other did not get the help needed despite giving them paperwork myself (my copy) and being on them for months. I have sinced moved my child to this high school since bullying from a known bully were dismissed, then beaten. My child is now doing great, states it feels like amoung family and is glad to be in this high school.

Rio Grande City High School is the best in the Valley even if some say Rio is not considered part of the Valley. Rio has some great techers like Mrs. Conway, Mrs. Ernestina Trevino and many other. Even with the greatest teacher the student has to put effort to has success, me for example I am at Texas State all thanks to the great teachers I had.....

I am a parent of a recent graduate. While everything that has been said is true, there are teachers who actually teach and encourage their students regardless of status. Unfortunately, it is actually better to hand-pick your teachers at this school. This shouldn't be that way but it is. There are some outstanding teachers, just ask grads which ones they actually learned with. They will tell you. The kids are honest to a fault. As for administration, they do play favorites. That is true. I won't lie about that. They can change their mind with the wind. Extra-curricular activities? There are many to choose from. Is there favortism? Yes. But not in every activity. There are a full-range of activities and some are not well-participated in but due mostly to lack of publicity, not due to favortism or lack of sponsorship/coaching. All in all, this school is ok, but not great.

I also agree that this school is not a very good school I pulled my child out of this school due to alot of favoritism that goes on in this school if you are not in a certain group you are treated differntly and i agree with this other parent that states that the school is run by the students and the certain adults that are administrators. My daughter has since recieved her GED and is starting college classes this fall, I only wish that the drop put rate was not as high as it is in Rio Grande, but then i do blame some of the staff and Teachers at this High School.

My children attend Rio High and personally this school is absolutely much worse than any school I could have chosen for them. Considering the number of students in attendance, the graduation rate for seniors pales in comparison. The extracurricular activities are mediocre especially when it comes to theatre, music, and dance. These activities have sparse productions and are always Spanish in nature. When it comes to poor education in Rio, this school district its parents, and other supporting staff are to blame. Those who think this school is great, think so because there are no requirements or discipline. The students make the rules, which can change according to the status of the student and even possibly the weather.

I am a Rio Grande City High School graduate and in my opinion every high school has it's good and bad qualities. There are a lot of positive things for example, the excellent band, U.I.L and athletic programs. What I think this school lacks is a good teacher personnel. Don't get me wrong there are a few teachers that really do care and are great at what they do, most are not though. They should be more strict on what a teacher is eligible to teach what by law according to their educational background. Many teachers get their jobs by a who do you know basis and it shouldn't be like that. If the administration cannot find an eligible teacher to teach a certain course that still doesn't make it right to give the position to somebody who has an education degree but lacks every other criteria.

The quality of academic programs this school offers are great, though, I would have liked that we would have more to offer our children. For one I wish they would have a large swimming pool, culinary arts, and other bigger extracurricular activities that would get them ready for the future. Not all children want to be lawyers or with the police force but they want to be great chefs one day or others. Nonetheless, overall the teachers are great especially the ones that have been there for a long time. I hope in the future they will add more activities for preparation in the new world out of high school....
