My daughter, who is Kindergarten, switched half way through the year and her teacher helped her make the transition seamless. Being in a Military Community I am sure they see it all the time for instance my Daughters first day was also the first day for 10 other children.
My two children started attending Holiman in aug 2002 and i am happy to say that their experiences there have been amazing. They have both excelled academically will the help and guidance of the Holiman staff. They both participated in the host/stars program and were both commended on reading every year since! The entire staff from custodians to teachers have been involved in everything that happens at Holiman. I have never had an unanswered call,e-mail or note, the communication between parent and school is excellent. I have found in my 6 years of experience with the staff and faculty, like life, what you as a parent put into it is what you and your children will get out of it. But what is the best about Holiman is that even if you don't put in an effort your kids are getting the best elementary education in the state of Texas!
The quality of academic programs are pretty good curriculum-wise, but poorly executed by staff. The teachers we have dealt with do not communicate well with the children's parents. For a school to work, it needs to be able to communicate with not only the parents, but each other as well. I gave this school the overall rating of 2 meaning I will never send my child there again.
Holiman is a school that is improving. Test scores have gone up. They are now some of the highest in the district. PE and music are attended everyday for the lower grades and the upper grades switch days (music one day, PE the next). Communication between the teachers and the parents needs great improvement, but the parents are now more involved then I have seen in the past 3 years. The building itself is old and needs work, but there are plans to fix that. This school is heavy on military dependants. Which means class size constantly changes, but if you are military, it is nice to have the kids together that understand the lifestyle. The school seems to do a good job at supporting the military families as well.
My daughter was new to Holiman this school year and was very behind as far as Texas curriculum goes. But, she has improved so much since she has been here. Her teacher, her HOST mentors, her tutors, her principal, and everyone else at the school have gone out of their way to help her catch up. As a result of all of that, her self-esteem has improved, grades have improved, she passed the reading part of the TAKS test, and is looking promising for the math part as well. We, as parents, are very involved with every aspect of her life, and are very thankful for the quality of the education that she is getting and the dedication and commitment to excellence that Holiman Elementary School exhibits.
