School Official Point of View

HFA: Alameda School for Art + Design is San Antonio's only art and design high school focusing on strong academics, art and design. At full enrollment we will serve grades 9 through 12, and as a public charter school, all enrolled students will attend tuition-free. Our focus is on engaging high school students and preparing them for the future through strong academics, a college-going culture, intensive art and design preparation that includes studio seminars, and real-world experiences that focus on innovation and creativity. Students and their families will find that HFA: ASAD is different from other high schools. That's by design. HFA: ASAD will exemplify new type of art and design education experience, where creative high school students will work and learn from teachers, community leaders and professional artists. At HFA: ASA+D students will experience; *Immersion in a college going culture. *An engaging curriculum designed to create the habits, knowledge and skills students need to achieve at high levels. *Intensive art and design course work and training. *Access to community arts resources and facilities. *Extra time for personalized support and homework assistance in the daily schedule. *Caring adult role models in an environment that is nurturing, safe and secure. *Small class sizes and more hours of instruction. *Hands-on, project based learning led by highly qualified teachers. *Targeted support for academic achievement. *Inclusive family atmosphere where parents are welcomed as partners. *Daily opportunities to observe adults and college students learning and working. *In-depth exploration of college and career pathways. *Structured workplace experiences in the community, such as job shadowing and internships.

The original principal, J Flores left this school. The English and math teachers that last year's Freshman and this year's Sophomores have he'd are ineffective for most of the students. There has not been any substantial support for the students who failed last year's Starr tests, or for students with IEPs. There is no PE or extracurricular athletics. We have been very, very disappointed with this school. Now that the school has moved lack parking makes it very difficult for parents to visit the school. There are lab facilities but for some reason the chemistry students have not had any labs. Although the school's charter declares a focus on innovation, they recently haven't even been able to keep up with the most basic educational requirements. PSAT tests were missed, meaning that that class missed the opportunity to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. Some teachers are good, but without math and English, this school is in trouble.I hope this school can bring, but I can't recommend it now.

This school is really great for the child who feels "less encouraged" in a traditional high school. Creativity is fostered and encouraged. Attending college is presented as a "non option". They are shown the many different undergrad options out there that will assist them in furthering their passions in the real world while collecting a paycheck for doing something they love! I wasn't real thrilled with the principal, Mr. Flores. He seemed to be a bit of an ego-maniac but he is gone now. The teachers seem to exhibit a real passion for the children and their success. They, alone with the administrative staff, have demonstrated complete competency the absence of a principal as they look for someone else and I look forward to an amazing senior year for my daughter in their new location!

Excellent school! The Principal is very involved and knows every student individually and makes sure they are each successful. The teachers truly want the students to succeed and go above and beyond to help them achieve success and graduate with confidence. Academics are excellent.

Fantastic school. The environment is relaxed enough to let creativity flow, while still upholding very high behavioral standards. My son has immensely enjoyed his first year there. Wonderful, helpful, understanding teachers. The focus on college right from the start is a great thing, makes the kids think beyond high school and helps them focus on the future. We're excited by the move to the old Alameda theater building...the school will be even more special!
