We LOVE this school. Our daughter transitioned to TUMS last August and has made so many friends. We like that the after school and extended care gives our daughter (4 yrs old) to play and mingle with kids older and younger. She is an only child and thinks of school as her extended family. Teachers are educated and skilled at not only teaching but giving our daughter the confidence she needs to learn and build on skills. Our daughter's vocabulary has increased tremendously and she is writing her letters and can already count to 100 (with a little help). The extra curricular activities are nice and music and spanish classes are a real bonus!
I love the small class size and the attention each child is given. You can tell the teachers love what they are doing. The quality of education is superior and has allowed my child to flourish. With the technology the school has at the affordable tuition that is paid is a San Antonio secret. She is challenged and encouraged by the accelerated curriculum and the way it is presented. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this jewel.
This is our second child to go through the preschool program at TUMS. We could not be more pleased with the teachers and staff. They are so friendly and care about the kids. They do a lot with them in the preschool program to prepare them for kinder.
I have two children at TUMS. They both began in the preschool program and are now in Elementary. I have been more than pleased with the progress my children have made as well as the loving atmosphere. One of my children needed speech and the school was more than helpful. They do not offer speech because they are a private school, but they helped me get this service through NISD. My other student has been tutored for free after school by her last two teachers. We were told when we toured that Trinity has an excellerated curriculum that may not be for all children. I have found that the faculty at TUMS goes out of their way to make each child successful and confident.
My Son Attends this school right now, and in the beginning of the school year he had problems with his speech, and would even spell words backwords. I went to the school to address these issues, and was told that they don't offer anything for speech, and was told to call NISD. I had to put in all the work a school is suppose to do. Not to mention that his teacher would snap at me, or call me with a attitude if my son couldn't read some of the assignments at school, I felt as if the teacher just gave up. So I had a parent teacher and director meeting, since then things are o.k., but public schools do offer far more learning tools. My son's teacher made it seem that everything was our fault not hers. That wasn't the case. Great music class.
I have read the comments of the Decemember post, and I have to say that I agree with you on some levels. I do think that the kids should have more tools avaiable for them such as speech, and tutoring, etc. I have also read the commits posted by others in response. I think that every school has a unique enviornment, and it's true it is what you make of the school, but to post comments saying 'remember we as parents we need to' is wrong. I beleive that if the poster from Dec feels this way then that's o.k. 'We as parents should just give are opinion not relate to others postings'. I am giving this school a 2 star, because I have 2 kids that attend TUMS, and I found that this school is not for everybody. My kids will attend Carver Academy next year.
I'm sorry the December poster was disappointed but we are so happy with TUMS. Our daughter has been going there 2 years now. We were so reluctant to put her in school, but what a family we have found. The education is top notch, the environment is friendly and clean, and everyone cares for each other like family. Sometimes parents have to not be so demanding and be more understanding. The monthly programs are a way for the children to be excited about their education while still involving the parents. The children are very young and need family involvement in their education without being demanding and impatient. You won't find a better school than TUMS.
To the poster from Dec 2008, it is too bad that you did not give this school a fair chance. When my Son and Daughter started at this school they were 4 and 2 years old respectively. They are both now 5 and 3 in their first year here at TUMS and I find the school to be Outstanding. I like the fact the school has more than just education. We as parents need to remember that these are our children and as such need to make sure they enjoy childhood because the joys and pains of life will come soon enough. My daughter is writing her own name and learning at a fast rate. My son is reading and writing as well as learning his second language. Keep up the good work TUMS and always let my children be children as they learn to become adults.
I find the previous poster's comments interesting, given that we've had the opposite experience with TUMS. While TUMS does pride itself on being an accelerated school, I have personally found the teachers to be very patient and willing to help every student, due to the small class size. Even in the 'bigger' classes (kinder-2nd grade this year...no bigger than 15 or 16 students per class I would guess), the kids get good attention because those classes all have an excellent educational aide. It's what you make of it. We love that all the teachers know all the kids by name...even kids who have never been in their class. I don't understand what the previous poster means by 'monthly events'...the school does try to host a field trip each month, but I would hardly say the field trips overpower the academic side of things.
I had both my kids attending this school, but I have since pulled both my kids out of the school, the focus to me was not on academics, but on the different events held each month. I agree that it is great to want your child involved in different events, but if I want my kids in a summer camp, I would have them attend one. My wife and I pay a lot of money for 2 kids, and to see lack of education programs available is sad. This is the main point on why I am giving such a bad review, any school can take a very intelligent kid, and say we are rated very high on education, and academics. It is not what you can do for the intelligent kid, but what you can do for an average boy or girl, is what makes a great school.
