My child has attended SSE for 2 years, and although the teachers she and I have worked with have been wonderful the leadership of the principal and Asst. principal is not very well taken by this parent who is a teacher. The school is beautiful yet stale and cold. For an elementary school, there is no warm/ loving environment that is so important at such a young age. I also have problems with having to try out for an after school program and being charged $50.00 to be involved in a jump rope club/team. I believe that all children at this age should be included in any activity if they have the desire to be a part of the program and commit time to it. Not be told they are not good enough at age 8. Please-- thought cuts were only made in middle and high school!
I agree the school is huge and beautiful. The teachers seem friendly. The principles in charge really do need a serious attitude change. They are to rigid on what they believe, they think are always right...
Shady Shores had one really great thing going for it and that was the assist. principal, Mrs. Sherman. But she left. The principal worked much better with the older kids when she was at the middle school and 5th grade campus. The other staff there seem to be good, but there is very little diversity.
My son attends SSE and overall I have been pleased with the quality of the teachers and academics. While LDISD lacks certain after-school programs, I think it more than makes up for it in terms of being a smaller school where kids can feel like they are really a part of things.
The quality of academic programs that the students get are great. The students are getting the help they need. The teachers are down to earth and want to work with the parents. The availability of extracurricular activities are there for the students there are many activities for the students if they want to be involved. One thing I want to mention is the lack of after school programs that many other schools offer in the surrounding area schools. This is one thing that many parents are in need of I hope that in the future this program is available for the working parents.
So Far the school is huge and beautiful. Teachers seem friendly. But the Principle needs a serious attitude change. She puts on a smile for all the white families but has a reserved attitude towards the rest. She also acts 'different' towards children with developmental problems.
