In the east Texas area Woden is often left out of the top schools category, while schools like Central Heights are included in it. When in actuality Woden almost always receives better test scores, and more awards than any other school on Nacogdoches county. I feel like if a student has a desire to learn they definitely will if they go to Woden. I believe that the teachers really care about the students, and want them to learn. Woden also has an excellent basketball & Cross Country program with coaches that know what they are doing.
Woden is a very, very locally overrated district. There are some good teachers, but that's about it. There is poor balance between sports and other niches, the principal is a bit of a tyrant, and the school is chock full of typical small town ignorance. Politics and nepotism dominate the administration and there is a large amount of unhappiness amongst the teachers for unnecessary changes and amongst the students for the near-fascist state of control they are under. There is not much encouragement of critical thought and there is a lack of addressing many of the negative cultural elements common of the area (bullying, anti-intellectualism, machismo, etc). I would not recommend it.
My children attend Woden ISD and I have reached the conclusion that the changes that did come about were changes that should have been left somewhere else! The changes this year have been so bad that they are turning this district into a laughing stock all over the region. I'm sorry for voting in some of the board members that have seen fit to allow these changes!
The faculty is great. My kids learned alot in a safe and friendly environment at this school. Academics come first and the kids look forward to playing for winning sports teams across the board. I would reccomend any student attending Woden High School.
There are great teachers in here under the hand of a very poor principal. The pre-cal teacher was quite good at her job. The English teachers are superb as are the science teachers. The spanish teacher was quite good as well. The art teacher was very good, though she was in an environment where she could not give an adequate art education because the program was used mainly as a 'bird course' for lazy students with few dedicated students. Too much emphasis on Basketball and sports, not enough on the arts. Very little ethnic diversity. And way too much conservative ignorance among students, though this is the fault of the area the school is in. Very little balanced discipline. The school board has new members now and change will come I hope.
I was not able to learn much in this school. The students were intolerant, nasty and mean.
