St John The Baptist Middle School
Develops honesty: Disagree

The middle school is the weakest of the three schools on the Skaggs Catholic Center Campus due to the inept administration. They do not foster a caring and nurturing environment for the students or teachers because details are overlooked. From what I have seen, the principal and vice principal know very few of the students by name. They don't praise students or teachers for a job well done and instead spend too much time trying to catch students doing the wrong things. Teacher morale is down and turnover is extremely high. In turn, they hire whatever teachers will accept a job there.

This greatly varies. All teachers here are nice people, but many do not have much experience and there is absolutely NO oversight by administration.

Teachers are not permitted to give much homework (I was told 20 minutes a night was too much). Time for sports is emphasized above all else.

This school does not follow a rigorous curriculum. If parents complain, teachers are pressured by administration and grades will be changed.

Students are treated differently based on who their parents are and what their connection is to the school. Rules are not equally applied to various students. Politics governs this issue more than anything else.

Sadly, this could be a much better school but it is not run well. Nice parents, good kids... but administration cuts corners to hire the cheapest teachers who have little to no experience. "Rookie training ground" comes to mind. Ask how many teachers have experience and are certified - you'll be shocked. Yes, there are a few veteran teachers there, too, but it is a coincidence. Experience is simply not valued at this establishment. It's a top-down, heavy handed approach to administration. If you ask questions, you will be out of there. Heavy turnover.

If there was a better option for middle school I would have skipped SJB. The elementary school is wonderful w/ an exceptional principal and caring teachers from our experience. The middle school has many exceptional teachers that bring out the best in your child, particularly the honors teachers. Unfortunately there r also a few that are inexperienced and a couple that have just lost their desire. That is normal for all schools. The good teachers @ SJB middle outweigh the bad. The administration tho is the worst of all 3 schools. It is rare to hear a child being praised for good work or great accomplishments but normal to hear of students getting punished or reprimanded. The VP criticizes students often and thinks it is funny. She is a very good honors math teacher though. Ideally, she would serve our students better if she stayed a teacher and not a VP. The Principal unfortunately is not much better and does nothing to boost morale of the school. It doesn't seem there is a lot of respect for him from the talented teachers either. Academically, SJB middle is good but unfortunately the morale is dismal due to the principal and vp. It's unfortunate.

Very entitled community, they value money, and sports ability, nothing more. Many teachers lack experience, there are many fresh out of college. The math program at the Elementary school is simply AWFUL (everyday mathematics) and the middle and high schools use a completely different program. Worse yet the Elementary, Middle and High School principals are all related, so there's no chance anything will change until one or all of them moves on.

We have only attended from PreK4 and have just started Kindergarten. The teachers seem nice and I love that my student has multiple special classes (PE twice a week, art, music, Spanish, library, etc.) The quality of the food is the complete opposite. Although we are not Catholic, they do an outstanding job of creating a community and parent involvement (they require 25 hours each academic year).

The academics are quite good. The culture is unfortunately very elitist. Teacher's children get priority in almost everything, but especially athletics. Your child may well get an excellent education but good luck outside of class.
