Mill Creek Youth Center (YIC)

I was a resident there for 11 months several years ago. Of course due to the nature of the Youth Center it was practically remedial learning, but the teachers knew their stuff, were friendly, and were quick to show recognition to more advanced students. School has always been, and will remain, a meritocracy. Kids still fail the classes if they fail to show initiative, but the counselors and the head actually seem concerned about taking advantage of the opportunity to give the residents what ever edge they can in an environment where they're less prone to the type of distractions that got them there. The electives especially are amazing. Drama, construction, woodworking, psychology, guitar. I loved the teachers there and would like to give special thanks to Lou Garn. Opportunity doesn't need to knock, it's got the only key to your door.

I have a son that went there. It's not really a public school, its a juvenille prison. The teaching staff and counselors were GREAT. They worked with my child more than any other school that he has went to. Esp. Miller and Todd, the two school counselors. They helped my child find a direction in life and school when he was lost. I believe that his time there was the best that he would have ever had in any school in America. Thank you very much, Paula Fisiinaua
