our children were not challenged academically. i agree this school attracts kids kicked out of other private schools for either intellectual or emotional delays. we found the mothers very gossipy. at our new school we feel right at home and our children are finally operating at their fullest intellectual capacities.
My son is in his second year in the Beginning School, and his experience has been magical... I am astounded every day at how much he learns. What I love is that it's not just language development, literacy skills, and comfort with numbers (which are a part of the everyday curriculum), but also scientific curiosity, artistic exploration and development, and passion for discovery... I also greatly appreciate the love and care that the teachers have for their students. They talk about the students' paintings, stories, and activities with pride and love, as if they are talking about their own children. I have no doubt that this experience is setting my son up with a strong foundation, not just for school but for life.
Very disappointed. Have had two children attend this school. One is a "lifer." The LACK if community is what is most appalling. If you fit their mold, they are happy to accommodate you; but, step out of their box and you won't make it far. You will be ostracized and ignored. Discipline of students is random and arbitrary. Money speaks louder than character, integrity, commitment, and family. The upper levels of administration are deeply out of touch. Glad to be gone!
My child's learning experience at Rowland Hall has been worth every penny. My husband and I were educated in excellent public schools, including college, and were seeking a challenging, private, academic environment here in Utah. Rowland Hall's roots were founded in 1867 and the school boasts history, curriculum, core academics, and specialty classes that instill a passion for learning in its students. School staff and administrators delicately weave an artistic balance between social development, rigorous academics, specialty classes, and tradition that allows students to thrive. My son is a second grader and he will often "play at home" the subject at school that impressed him that day. Examples of recent play include: author and writer of his own book, artist, math games, and floor hockey. He is constantly challenged, however, he still has the energy to explore further. I invite you to experience an open house, or classroom tour. I was able to specifically draw my own conclusions once I was able to meet the staff, and develop my own impressions of the school first hand.
Our children have been at Rowland Hall from K through 12th grade, and each age range has been excellent. The teachers have been caring and outstanding in each division, and we are happy with the overall results. Rowland Hall education takes advantage of the outdoor nature of Utah, as well as following and academically rigorous curriculum.
Our daughter is thriving at Rowland Hall. Several factors contribute to her success and happiness: small class size; individual attention from caring, capable teachers; stimulating curriculum; excellent physical facilities; a great group of eclectic, diverse peers; a welcoming and warm school community. We are delighted with her development and could not be more pleased with her overall school experience and environment. "It takes a village to raise a chlld"....and Rowland Hall is our village. We highly recommend the school and can attest to its excellence.
Motivated students can do well anywhere, including Rowland Hall. My kids did well there, and went on to good colleges (where they were pleased and challenged to encounter academic rigor). RHSM has some good teachers. But unfortunately the school is not academically what you expect from a college prep school. The poor science curriculum is an especially big deficit in preparing kids for today's world. I agree with the previous reviewer, that you are better off in an honors program in one of SLC's public schools.
The English curriculum was as engaging, subversive, and rigorous as that most students experience in college (I remember grappling with authors as diverse as S.Plath, T.Morison, W.Faulkner, T.T.Williams, and S.Rushdie). I'm struck by the quantity of hyperbolic 1-star reviews. In 2013, how many parents think it possible to purchase their child's place at one of the world's most prestigious universities? You can't buy motivation, but motivated students find myriad ways to grow academically and personally at Rowland Hall. Many resources are there and the school's size means most students play simultaneous staring roles in sports and extra-curricular activities. Remember the sky is the limit -- not Harvard. Even without a perfect science program (and, for the record, 9th Grade Biology was spectacular!), the curiosity and confidence I developed at RH enabled me to take academic risks, ask ethical questions, unplug the TV, explore distant corners of the earth, and eventually pursue and an advanced degree in engineering. Looking back, was Rowland Hall magic? Will it turn every Beavis into the next da Vinci? Probably Not. But it was an excellent school for me and many of peers.
Our son is in his second year at Rowland Hall. He loves school. Loves. It. And the things they do in his classroom blow me away. Step by step, one thoughtful activity at a time, his teachers have drawn him toward reading (he used to hate the very idea of reading), writing, and mathematics. For example, the kids have one table where they practice writing. First he traces a letter with his finger on a sandpaper page. Then he writes with his finger in sand. Then he spells 3-letter words using that letter. Then he uses a crayon to trace the letter. Then he draws a picture using a word starting with that letter. Similar activities help him work on counting, sorting, spatial relationships, and fine motor skills. Honestly - I knew nothing about early childhood education before enrolling my son at Rowland Hall. I'm hugely impressed by how inviting, fun, and productive the school is.
My son attended Rowland Hall for 2 years from Kindergarten to First Grade includsive. When he left at the end of First Grade he was in the second highest reading group in his class (out of 4 reading groups) and we were told by the school that he was at grade level or just above in everything. We moved to another country (western country) and my son was tested by his new school and found to be 2 years behind his peers in everything from maths to spelling. As a result of this we had to put our son into remedial reading and writing classes and hire a tutor to tutor him in everthing from spelling to maths. A year later and he is catching up to his peers but he is still very behind in writing and spelling which they practically avoid in the lower classes at Rowland Hall. When I wrote to the school to inform them about this shocking result they just responded by saying that they have never received anything but positive feedback. I now know of other parents who have pulled their kids out of the school due to the poor academics at the school.
Rowland Hall creates lifelong learners who care about their communities. We've had children at the school for over a decade, from 4Pre-k to 12th grade, and the kids have been happy to leave the house every day, which is the best indication of a quality school. Rather than drilling the kids with rote learning, the school educates the whole child and prepares them to think in the complex ways that our complicated world demands. Passionate teachers and supportive staff ensure that kids get individual attention and that they will be prepared for college (I say that as a college educator myself.) In fact, my son took a college stats class his junior year and felt like he fit right in with the older students. Right now he's trying to decide where to attend university, having been offered admission to all 9 schools to which he applied. Finally, when we moved to Utah from the East Coast, the warm community that welcomed us to Rowland Hall made us feel right at home immediately, even though we were far away from family.
Our very different children, who are now in high school, have attended Rowland Hall since elementary school and have both been extremely successful there. Rowland Hall has an unparralleled ability to bring out the uniqueness of each child and let it shine. At the same time, Rowland Hall has a rigorous academic program that has taught my children to be independent, critical, and analytical thinkers. I am confident my eldest child is very well-prepared for college next year. Due to Rowland Hall, he has been accepted at several outstanding colleges and has some very good decisions to make. Finally, acknowledging the fact that we are in Utah, Rowland Hall offers the most diverse student body of any private school here, which has greatly benefitted both my children.
We have experienced 5 unbelievable years at Rowland Hall School. Our two children have enjoyed small class size, incredibly gifted teachers and administrators, an unparalleled specialty curriculum, state of the art technology and a supportive parent community. All of that sounds good on paper, but to actually experience the magic that goes on in the halls of this school every day is life-changing both for our children and for us. The core curriculum is integrated into every aspect of the child's day... the lesson of the moment is carried through the home room class to the science lab to spanish to computer lab to library to chapel and then to art and music.. All reinforcing the lesson in real world applications. Our children are also involved in the Rowmark Ski program... just another value-added opportunity for our kids. We consider ourselves so lucky to have found ourselves at this amazing school!
I have continually been impressed by the commitment the faculty have shown toward educating my boys and helping them reach their potential. There is an emphasis on creative thinking and abstract reasoning, which are skill that are sorely lacking in our current "Teach to the Test" world. One size does not fit all, and Rowland Hall makes sure that they are working to find the best ways to reach my kids and create real meaning and connection within their educational experiences. My wife and I are both products of top-flite East Coast prep schools with long and illustrious traditions. Our expectations for our children's educations were high. We have never had a moment's doubt about our choice to send our boys to Rowland Hall. My sons both wake up every day excited to go to school and have built wonderful relationships with both their teachers and the kids in their classes. This is not to say that there are not other worthy educational alternatives in SLC or Park City, and there can certainly be instances of sour grapes among those in the community who do not send their kids to RH, it's just that Rowland Hall was the right place for us and we wouldn't trade it for the world.
i have been at rowland for forever and in beginning school it was great. However, I feel that the quality of the education has decreased. A lot of my teachers don't really want to teach and make that clear. Every year they get rid of courses and increase class sizes. I don't think they care about being a college prep school.
My son has been at Rowland Hall for 5 years and we absolutely love it. His teachers have been very good - interested in him personally. The jazz band is wonderful, as well as the visual arts program. We appreciate the warmth of the entire community and the emphasis on helping students become ethical, well-rounded people.
Unfortunately, Rowland Hall does not live up to its hype. Some teachers are very good, some are worse than mediocre. The science program is poor. The leadership is uninvolved, unresponsive and uninterested in academics. The published student teacher ratio does not reflect class size, because of the plethora of non-teaching "teachers" . These nonteachers include a sustainability director, a director of community service (of which little is done), several people trying to get you to donate extra money, 2 college counselors for a class size of 60 students, etc. Classes even in honors courses often contain more than 20 students. There is a huge drug problem. Most students go to mediocre colleges. If I had known what this school was really like, I would have sent my kid to West.
I would not send your child here. I have sent my children to this school over the course of 15 years. Every year it goes down in quality and the enrollment increases without teachers increasing. By doing this class sizes become larger and larger so there have been instances where children have not had desks to sit at. A European History teacher decided to have his unit on medieval history be summed up by two movies- Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Name of the Rose both of which are inappropriate and do not teach students anything. However if you wish to spend upwards of 20,000 on your children for an impersonal, sub-par education then I am recommend this place.
My experiences with Roland Hall were mixed. Some good, some bad -- about like you'd expect from a public school. Certainly not outstanding. I can speak only for the preschool and lower school. If you want a really good school, take a look at The Open Classroom (in the Avenues). This is a (free) public school, where parents, teachers and kids learn together. Upon visiting the school, you'll notice how happy all the kids are -- they walk down the hall with big smiles on their faces.
It's a good school in our 15+ year experience. I see many rave reviews here; all pretty true, in my optinion. What you won't hear very often, and what the school refuses to recognize and acknowledge, is the so-so math and science education. It's good; there are some great teachers; but they won't help your child excel. Just ask all the foreign-born MD's and PhD's - they're dismayed that we are so far behind the other countries. My children have been bored, sometimes for the entire year.
