My daughter has been going to this school for 2 years already and i love the fact that they are bilingual.
I am very pleased with my child's education at Dixie Downs. He is currently in 2nd grade but started in Kindergarten. I couldn't believe how advanced he was compared to my friend's children who attend another school. He is reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish already. I am so excited about his future possibilities because he will be bi-lingual. I look forward to when he enters the 4th grade and he can start learning the violin. It surprised me to read comments about people not being friendly, everyone seems very friendly and cooperative. They want your child to succeed.
I have my son who is attending this school. He started the dual language program since Kinder. He is now in first grade. I am profoundly astounded to see his mental growth. He is able to speak, read, and write fluently in both English and Spanish. Besides learning so much, there is so many extracurricular activities going on in the school. They offer after school programs until 6pm. Many teachers teach intervention to students who need the help. I haven't heard of a school in St. George that offers this free help. This school is the only school in the district to offer a full time music and violin instruction. I appreciate the many different programs going on in this school. The teachers are very well trained and are dedicated. Most of the comments I have read are from parents who are giving false reviews, please read the principal's comments.
Dixie Downs is a great school. My son is in kidergarten. It is the only school in the district that has full day kindergarten. My child is starting to read, not only in English but in Spanish! I've noticed my son's alertness increase. I speack two languages from serving on a mission in a different country. I know first hand how learning a new language broadens the mind and helps in making connections with other languages. The teachers at this school care a great deal.
My children attended this school a year and a half. The secretaries never smiled and ignored me every time I walked into the school. The principle ignores any concerns you have about education, and yes, it seems his only concern is the Spanish program.
This School has many poblems that are not reaching resolution. The main problem for my family is the 'dual immersion' program. It forces students to recieve 50% of their education in spanish. This would not be a huge problem for some people, even an advantage, but is not right for everyone. If it were optional, it would be best for everyone! I can't even get teachers to include english instructions so I can help my children with their homework! My son is struggling with this program (my daughter too). One of the reasons we picked this location to buy a home was it's proximity to the school. At the time they didn't have this program. The first year was optional but the next year they made it required! They say you can opt out but that means enrolling them ina different school with no help with transportation!
I'm the PrincipaL of Dixie Downs Elementary. I would like to clarify a comment made by someone regarding Dixie Downs School. We do participate in field day and science fair. and many other extra curricular programs. We are the only school in the District that has a full time music specialist. We run after school programs, summer school, all day kindergarten, safety patrole, and this coming year we will offer violin instruction for all 4th and 5th graders. In addition to these many enriching programs, we teach children to speak fluently in two languages. :)
my kids are just finishing their 2nd year at Dixie downs. this school is now implementing the 'dual immersion' program where 1/2 the day is taught in spanish and half in english. for now this only affects the K & 1st & next year will move up to the 2nd graders. it seems as though this program is the administrators and some teachers main focus. Their plan is to make this a spanish magnet school. This has proven to be very controversial. It seems like this is the principals largest priority. There seems to be more extracurricular activities offered to the older classes. Activities like a track and field event where most neighboring schools participated Dixie downs did not. The PTA seems to be trying really hard to get more parent involvement whether or not the principal will assist them or be pre-occupied with the dual immersion will be seen.
