This is an amazing school where the students seen as individuals and respect for others is of paramount importance. The teachers are quite brilliant, with a true understanding of progressive education. Children are allowed to grow following their own interests while still realizing their role as part of a community. Parents are actively involved and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of school life. Kids graduate as responsible, self-motivated, self-possessed people who are likely to go on and do great things.
There is an extraordinary atmosphere of community and respect for the unique nature of every child at Hiland Hall. This is found in the teachers who nurture it and the students themselves who are remarkably caring and respectful of one another. My child has learned to love learning and to listen to, and respect, her own intellect and creativity.
We thought the school was very strange. It bills itself as a progressive curriculum, but we saw no evidence that progressive educational philosophy was understood by the staff. The curriculum seems to be more dictatorial than anything else, with the teachers barking orders and requiring the students to adhere to a fairly rigid classroom schedule. The teachers seem distant and gruff, with one of them just out of college and very obviously without complete training as a teacher. The facility is filthy and shabby.
Hiland Hall is a school that respects children, and works with each child at his or her own level. Children work in flexible multiage groupings.
Amazing teachers who will really know your child. Parent involvement is extremely high, but nothing is mandated--you do what you can. A true community of learners ages 41/2 - 14. Child centered curriculum that balances children's individuality with responsibility to group and community. No standardized testing, but very thorough narrative parent reportsl
