Putney is truly one of a kind, offering an exceptional context for the development of well rounded, engaged, thoughtful and hard working teenagers. Teachers at Putney do not just pay lip service to the lofty ideals of progressive education: they very definitely walk the walk. The current Head of School sets a wise and compassionate tone for the community. Things like the work program (all students have jobs!), project weeks (replacing conventional exam periods) and "Long Fall" expeditions set Putney apart.

Putney is a fantastic school for the right child. Most students are boarding students so it helps a lot of their independent and responsible. Putney has a creative and rigorous academic environment but really shines in the arts and in the broad range of activities that students can be involved in outside of the classroom. Examples include working a a functioning farm, weaving, cutting wood to heat the buildings and many others.

My daughter attended The Putney School from 9-12. I believe she was truly supported in developing her critical thinking skills, written and oral communication. Putney supports expanisve thinking, social awareness, involvment. Extracurriculurs are great. My daughter did crew for 4 years, music at many levels all 4 years, and really developed her leadership qualities and participated fully in this wonderful community. She was seen and respected and in some ways has been a little spoiled for the cold, cruel world where conformity reigns supreme. The Putney School is a special and unique place where superficial values are discouraged. The entire school (students, staff)gets together to sing once a week, how's that for uplifting and bonding?

A terrific school that centrers on the complete development of a child into a responsible and capable adult. This school teaches so much more outside of the classroom environment than most schools do within. The school also manages to do all this while giving the students more and more responsibilities as they progress through their time on campus, preparing them for the eventual progression into college. As far as music, art, sports and other extracurriculars, Putney offers its students everything from dairy barn chores to traditional balkan singing to printmaking.
