An excellent environment for children to develop self confidence, openness to diversity, values of self worth, community, and a tremendous academic education that is very personalized.
This school has been a really great experience for our son this year. Our family has very high standards about education, and we are blessed to have found this school. Kids have the freedom to express themselves here, and are not judged for any quirks they may have (and all kids have them!). There are all kinds of kids here, which I think is great because life is a mix of different people, and everyone is truly accepted with kindness. Bullying is absolutely not tolerated at all, and children are taught kindness daily. There is a rule "you can't say you can't play" which means that one child can't tell another "you can't play with us!" Everyone is encouraged to be friends across the grades, and mentoring is encouraged in activities like reading buddies. Our son is in the 3rd/4th class, and has a teacher whom "remarkable and talented" barely scrapes the surface of what this teacher represents daily to his students. We have his cell number, and he is ALWAYS available to talk with us about anything at all. He completely captivates his students, and is very dynamic. Families are always welcome at the school and in the classroom. It is truly a welcoming community for all.
The Schoolhouse has been a wonderful place for my two children to learn to love learning. They are both quite engaged on a daily basis. As of Spring, 2010, we are about to change from a co-op (where there is a lot of parental responsibility) to a family-centered learning atmosphere (where parents can be as involved as they want but are not as obligated to be involved as past years). We love Schoolhouse and can't imagine any other place that would love and engage our children as much.
The Schoolhouse Learning Center has been an excellent school for my children. The overall curriculum is academically stimulating and engaging and encourages both creativity and hard work. The teachers are extremely talented and each brings her own special gifts to teaching and guiding children. The cooperative nature of the school and its small size gave me the chance stay intimately involved in my children's education and be part of a larger, hard-working community of parents and teachers dedicated to the future of the school and the welfare of each child. My children have loved being there, have made many friends, and will always feel a special bond with the teachers. I would recommend The Schoolhouse to any family seeking an alternative education for their elementarty school child.
My two children attend the Schoolhouse and are academically engaged and curious. They couldn't be more different, but the Schoolhouse meets their different social and academic needs amazingly well. I value that my kids not only are academically excited, but that they are learning to be members of a community and learning the importance of learning to live together will all kinds of people and all ages. I couldn't think of a better place for my kids.
My child attended the Schoolhouse for a single year. She was unhappy. I saw her confidence diminish. Academically she went unchallenged, and the atmosphere for learning was chaotic, noisy and undisciplined. Bullying was near daily. Teachers were smug and unresponsive. The parental responsibilities were onerous. Parents were, in large part, a cliquish, gossipy and judgmental group.
We have been very pleased with the academic and social experiences for our children at the Schoolhouse. The teachers integrate intensive academic study in a fun environment with personalized attention allowing each student to choose particular study topics within broader schoolwide themes. Each year there is a science display, school play, cultural display, and art display where students present to the community what they have learned in a variety of media. The school is run by a parent board, and expectations are that each family will actively participate in the functioning of the school, including a five week (1 hour/wk) course per parent during the year. The cooperative nature of the school is a great strength, but asks more of parents than a school where you simply drop off your kids each day. The small school size means all children get to know each other and play together.
