This is a school where students can be themselves without fear of being bullied for being different. LD and all students here are treated with respect by peers and staff alike. Each student's education is tailored to his/her needs and level of achievement, so every student can excel and do her/his personal best. I love this school because it works for our kids!

I am an academic tutor who works with an Alex Friends School student. I have been this young man's tutor for almost 7 years, through three schools. This year, his first at AFS, has been the most positive ever. The workload is manageable--which enables him to truly master concepts and skills. The caring community created by AFS staff has made a dramatic difference in his attitude toward homework completion and learning in general has taken a huge turn for the better. Well done AFS!

My son cannot imagine going to school anywhere else. He has always been a bit of a 'square peg' but this school makes it their business to smooth those edges. It's a confortable nonthreatening environment. This shouldn't be something that's hard to find - but it is.

Our son had difficulty at two schools that were supposed to be tailored to his needs. At Alexandria Friends, he is doing a good deal better academically and is much more comfortable with schooling. We attribute this to the caring, individual atention that he is receiving from faculty members.

Alexandria Friends School is a special place for students who have lost their zest for learning. It succeeded Thornton Friends School (TFS) at the same location when TFS consolidated to one site in Silver Spring, MD. A group of parents and faculty together with a Board representing Quaker Meetings locally, pulled together a new school from families in VA. Together this group recruited a new group of students. Now in year three, AFS is a growing success. If your child has difficulties in large school settings this may be the place for him/her. With small classes and teachers who care about learning, AFS provides an individually tailored learning experience. The school has students from international settings, home schooled students and a mix of students from public and private schools. The standards are rigorous, however, they allow for the needs and interests of individual students. My son actually likes attending school.

Finding the Alexandria Friends School was a god send! Our ADD son was convinced that he was 'stupid' (which his IQ scores belied) and absolutely hated school. He looks forward to school everyday and is doing well in subjects that were previously a challenge. When I asked what the difference was at Alexandria Friends, he said: 'the teachers treat us and respect us like equals.' It seems it is this one single element that has helped unlock my son's natural love of learning again. He is even learning to love subjects that he thought he had no interest in. While the small enrollment size was initially of concern, I now realize that it is a gift... like having private tutors and mentors. As Yeats said 'education is not so much the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire,' We are so pleased that AFSl is providing the perfect 'match' for our son.

We feel extremely fortunate to have found Alexandria Friends School. Our daughter, a first-year student at AFS, is academically engaged and excited about school--and that's a real turnaround. She's getting an individualized education in the truest sense--very small classes, assignments tailored to her interests and skills, and teachers who take a real interest in her progress and style of learning. It's a school where open communication--student, teachers, and parents--is emphasized and where such values as honesty and integrity matter. Our only regret is that we didn't stumble across AFS sooner.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
