I am very favorably impressed with the dedication of the schools principal, teachers and other staff members, and also a critical mass of parents and local elected officials. Everybody pulls together to help, and this is especially important because of the year-round calendar. My only concern is with the lack of space to store materials for some of the staff members and for the PTA. My son is doing well, academically and socially, after learning some essential social skills in the early grades.

The comment posted May 25, 2010 could have been written by me. My daughter is flourishing, despite having some personal issues last year that staff were very helpful with. I look forward to my son starting next year. The dual language and intersession programs are both terrific. I'm not a big believer that test scores tell all -- still, I'd like to see the scores for the subgroups getting better. I know they work at it, but clearly haven't found the answers yet.

Mount Vernon is a terrific school, with excellent staff and program. When my daughter had some anxiety and attention issues in her class, the teachers and counselors were very responsive and it didn't take long to get the situation turned around. As befits a "community school," there is a great feeling of community and a lot of reaching out. I can't say enough good things about the intersession program, allowing kids to explore favorite or new areas in a more relaxed setting. I do feel (and if you talk to the older students, they'll reinforce this) that principal leadership, especially as an instructional leader, is average. But a new principal will be arriving this summer, so I'll be back with an update.

Our school offers much more than test scores can measure. Intersession classes (5 weeks extra enrichment/remediation) build on the interests and talents that each student brings! World languages are offered to all students through traditional or dual language programs. MVCS teachers are highly qualified; 80 percent have post-graduate degrees. The staff knows and cares about each student. Our principals are true instructional leaders, dedicated to continuous improvement. After school, there are PTA-sponsored clubs and after school care options connecting students to the community. Many students speak another language at home - which is sometimes reflected in our test scores (as it takes 5-7 years to acquire academic test language); however, we view this rich language environment as an asset to our goal of helping children become responsible, self-reliant, contributing citizens of a changing world. We have had a great experience with MVCS. My daughter's teachers are in tune with her abilities, challenging her and sparking her creativity. The modified calendar enables time for many fascinating learning experiences, like the 2-week 'Camping in Colorado' course that my daughter just completed, which introduced her to new concepts in biology, geology, astronomy, geography and math, just to name a few! I would recommend MVCS to anyone interested in a diverse, vibrant community school.

Mt Vernon is a diverse, yet resourceful school. With all of the offerings during the regular school year, as well as the intersession special classes, my challengingly smart (and easily bored) child has had a great experience. The school staff has been responsive to any questions and concerns that I or other parents have voiced, and the PTA is is very involved in keeping this a great school.

We also have two girls here at Mount Vernon and have been very happy. Both my girls are very challenged and the quality of the teachers and instruction is excellent. I work half time and the modified school calendar is wonderful. The girls get to take great classes like sailing, art and architecture and I only worry about filling seven weeks of summer - which is so nice! Also we take vacations in October and April when it is less crowded to travel internationally.

We have two kids at Mt. Vernon and have been very happy with the school. In addition to receiving a solid education, it is a very supportive environment and in combination with the Mt. Vernon Rec Center next door, it is a support structure for the kids which cannot be beat. The intersessions which resulted from the modified calander are also a plus as it allows the kids a taste of all sorts of subjects ranging from karate to yoga to math games and exploring science. Lastly, the dual langauge program is wonderful and is a model which I would like to see expanded. Overall, we have been very pleased and think the city has done an excellent job of providing quality education at the elementary school level.

We have two children at Mount Vernon, now in first and second grade, both in the dual-language program. Their teachers are attentive, professional and hard working. The principal has real affection for the students yet she also does a great job of maintaining discipline. We are very excited about the modified school calendar, which they will roll out in the summer of 2005. This new calendar will allow more teacher contact time for remedial work as well as enrichment. And we like the idea of being able to take vacations off-peak.

I was worried going into this school, I hadn't heard great things. But quickly all my worries went away. My daughter's teacher is amazing! The school really focuses on not letting the kids get out of hand & they are on top of everything. I am very pleased & wish her teacher could move up every grade!
