Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Our school has been great for my daughter. In the first semester of Kindergarten, our daughter has progressed so much further than when she was in pre-school this year. She loves her teacher, Mrs. Kirk, and the school and the PTA keep you well informed about our daughter's progress and school developments. For parent involvement, my wife has enjoyed the opportunities to participate in-class activities and be a classroom parent.

How can you state the teachers are superb if the scores in reading and math have declined each year for the last three years? Look at the scores listed below.

The teachers at Barrett are superb. They get to know each child as an individual so that they can better foster his or her development. The Barrett Community is friendly and welcoming. The school has tons of resources to insure that every child learns. In particular we like that it is a NASA explorer school with a science focus. My children love it!

Great school. My kid loves it there. The emphasis on science and math (e.g., Project Discovery) is great and really unique in Arlington.

I don't know what "parent" wrote the previous review but it can not possibly be a parent with a child at Barrett or they would know that almost everything they stated is false. There are a lot of students who receive free lunch, but the classes are not 80% Hispanic. Barrett is a choice school but they have not been accepting out of boundary children for years since they have been at capacity, except for siblings. There are indeed children from N. Arlington school districts such as Ashlawn, McKinley, and Nottingham who chose Barrett over their neighborhood program. Arlington Forest is a very sought-after neighborhood because of its relatively affordable homes, good location, and strong sense of community, which carries over to the elementary school. I have had one child at Barrett for four years and another who will start soon. We do know of a few children who left Barrett for other schools because it wasn't a good fit for them, but everyone we know there currently is very pleased with the school.

Barrett Elementary is a fabulous school with a wonderful, experienced principal and dedicated staff. We were lucky to be able to choose to attend Barrett when transfers were permitted from nearby "cluster" schools and the community has become our community even though we don't live in the neighborhood. It has been a great fit for my children educationally and socially. Barrett has been recognized for its leadership in human rights and community building and does amazing things to bring everyone together in a rich learning environment. Barrett students are engaged in many ways and are lucky to have the Science Discovery Lab and TV studio which are lead by extremely talented teachers. Just this year Barrett was selected to offer the foreign language "FLES" program and the staff and students made the transition remarkably well.

Barrett is a wonderful school. The teachers are top-notch, and the principal is amazing. The community is very welcoming and close knit. The family involvement in the school community is an added bonus. The projects at the class level and the school wide level are fun, creative, and a great way to inspire the kids to learn.

I love the primary Montessori program and the fact it's close enough for my daughter to walk to. As a former aerospace engineer, I'm especially tickled that they're hooked up wuth NASA!

Barrett pulses with energy and optimism! It's a diverse school -- economically, socially, racially, ethnically, linguistically. The principal's terrific leadership brings it all together, and enables students, teachers and staff to excel with initiatives like 'Project Discovery' and the 'NASA Explorers' program. E pluribus, Barrett!

Among other things, I'm impressed with the writing program. Ms Rente had my granddaughter writing and illustrating her own books within the first months of Kindergarten. My second granddaughter is in Ms Rente's class this year. I've observed Ms Rente's classroom. She dispenses discipline along with affection for her students.

Barrett Elementary School is a wonderful neighborhood school with dynamic teachers and outstanding and supportive administrators. It's a place where all the children are encouraged to believe in themselves and expected to be the very best that they can be. It is innovative and at the same time traditional. What a fantastic, winning combination!!

Barrett is a NASA explorer school that is committed to discovering the gifts of every child. The teachers, administrators and students are amazing! Just check out their website (www.arlington.k12.va.us/schools/barrett)...you will find monthly blogs and pages devoted to the activities in Barrett's Project Discovery Science lab and other events such as Projects Interaction's Library Nights. Project Interaction's TV studio also posts regular podcasts including student projects, the Radio Ranch programs and, starting this year, podcasts of the daily Tiger TV newscasts. Check out some of the school's Public Service Announcements. You will be impressed by how well the students come together to produce such spectacular community messages.

Barrett does a fantastic job of making learning fun. The warm atmosphere leaves the children comfortable and happy, and there is an incredible amount of parental support, interaction, and participation in the school and its programs.

It is a wonderful community of caring teachers, parents, and a fabulous principal who gets to know everyone in her school. There are dozens of ways to get involved, and the rich cultural diversity of this school helps the children learn to appreciate a world full of various beliefs and backgrounds.

Have not been impressed with the principal, who looks at everything through rose colored glasses. No issue brought to her is taken seriously, and parents are made to feel idiotic for speaking up. The quality of education (class size, caliber of teachers) has declined dramatically as of late.

An excellent little school with wonderful and caring teachers and administration. My children have really blossomed at Barrett. The small class sizes and involved staff have really made a difference.

The school principal and teachers are proactive and it has an active PTA group support. Academically the same level as in other VA primary school with focus on supporting large hispanic student population. There is Bi-lingual English/Spanish in all their back-to-school meetings and official communication. Academic the same except history in grades 4 all on VA. Wish there was more world history. The teachers are friendly. After school program and staff supportive. The class sizes are small compared to other public schools. They help spanish speakers a lot but I would have also liked my child to have learned Spanish as an after-school program for non-Spanish speaking students. This would have let my native english speaking child mingle better with the large hispanic student population. Failed to convince school and county representative about my child's special education needs which were supported by grade level teacher and child's focus needs.

KW Barrett is a wonderful school. The principal provides excellent leadership and she makes it a point to know all her students. The teachers are friendly and caring, they use different ways to motivate the children, and they work well as a team. We have numerous special programs and enrichment activities, as well as a pilot accelerated math curriculum. Our class sizes are small and we are proud to have the 03-04 VA Teacher of Year at Barrett.
