I am surprised by the negative comments because I have been a student at Powhatan for nine years and have not encountered any problems. I am graduating in a week and am proud to say that i have taken advantage of all of the wonderful things that Powhatan has to offer. The curriculum is challenging and interesting and the teachers have encouraged me to do my best. Individual needs are able to be met because of the small class sizes. There is no favoritism, although the teachers do expect civil and respectful behavior from the students. Along with outstanding academics, the school has a great sports program. I have learned how to work as part of a team as well as achieve my personal best. All in all I am thankful that I was able to attend such an amazing school that has provided me with many great friendships and a valuable education that will stay with me forever.
Powhatan would not be surviving if it was not for the lack of private schools around. The majority of teachers and faculty are very political and if you or your children do not play their game your child will be a target. They dictate rules that they only apply to some and not to others. The upper school is by far worse then lower and they need to clean house with some of the teachers that they keep in power positions even though they cant stand children. They have big time control issues and whatever you do ...don't ever question why your children may be a target or the upper school wrath will reign down on your children. They refuse to allow Mac's ( unless your a student of a faculty member). The computers they dictate you purchase are very expensive and will break down numerous times... they will then dictate you to purchase another one! This is a one star school at best... that goes for the academics as well! Consider other options , I wish I would have! Many parents would like to volunteer but parent involvement is hand selected and very much about politics and who plays their game.
Powhatan is a positive place for kids to learn. Come visit Powhatan, and you'll see happy, engaged students from Pre-K to 8th grade. Not only are the main subject areas strong but Powhatan also provides a well-rounded education involving the outdoors, music, art, athletics, drama, and community service. Thanks to Powhatan, my two boys have learned to look adults in the eye, shake hands, and converse confidently and competently. They also know how to work in groups - to communicate and solve problems with others, to tackle projects, thanks to Powhatan's cooperative, project-base learning approach. Powhatan has fostered both my boys' strengths and allowed them to fully explore their talents - and pushed them to reach beyond the comfort zone into new areas. I appreciate all that Powhatan is doing for my children.
The Powhatan school motto is "We learn not for school but for life." Each morning my children are excited to go school. Their days are spent exploring the campus, taking field trips to places like the Kennedy Center and being challenged by engaging teachers. Powhatan has proven to be a compassionate and intellectually stimulating school for our children. Idyllic location, consistently excellent teachers, strong focus on nature and citizenship. We looked at several options, but no other school in western Loudoun, Middleburg, or Winchester was able to match what Powhatan offers.
Powhatan School is a wonderful preK-8 independent school in rural Boyce VA. The curriculum is literature based, meaning children read great literature rather than excerpts in text books. It's an open campus and children are encouraged to explore the outdoors through its Nature Enhanced Approach to Learning which cuts across all curriculum levels from art, to science, to writing, to sports. The School's mission is 'we learn not for school but for life'. That ideal permeates all levels of the school, where lessons are project based and hands-on so that students truly learn the subject they are studying rather than just facts that they then regurgitate for a test. I believe Powhatan is not only a great school but one of the best!
Powhatan is not like it use to be. Our children currently attend Powhatan. Unfortunately in this area you are limited on good schools so Powhatan is the lesser of two evils. Kindergarten- not impressed. The teachers seem more worried about catching children doing something bad rather than catching them doing good. The assistant? Not any better. 1st grade- questionable. There are two classes. The one teacher has a very strong personality and can't seem to get along with the other teacher. The school has gone through three 1st grade teachers in 3 years because no one can seem to get along with this particular teacher(as a side note- she came from Clarke County HS where she was the principal but is now a teacher?) 2nd grade- can you say nepotism? It is a Aunt and niece team. Was not pleased with this grade at all. 3rd grade- now we are getting better. 4th grade- things are starting too look up. I could go on...... Curriculum is above public. There is a emphasis on literature. In all honesty, the teachers could work on their compassion skills especially the younger grades but since we are limited in schools in the area, this is the best that we've got and unfortunately we will return.
Powhatan has many wonderful qualities and some areas of opportunity. I do find that the curriculum is challenging and my child is learning a great deal. There is blatant favoritism and teachers would do well to treat all their students with respect and kindness. The school should be building the self-esteem of the children not tearing it down with belittling and ridicule.
We are having a wonderful experience at Powhatan School. We are impressed that even at a young age the children are taught personal responsibility. We are very happy and would highly recommend this school to anyone who values the power of education.
So far, Powhatan has exceeded our expectations in every way. Although both my husband and I have public school backgrounds, we chose Powhatan based on our interaction with the upper school students during an extensive tour. The students were articulate, confident and amazingly at ease speaking to prospective parents. Now as a part of Powhatan, I feel even more confident that we made the right choice. The intimate class size really allows for individualized instruction and the faculty really knows each student so well. This was very important to us. In addition to a very strong academic program, the children have significant exposure to art, music, languages and sports to provide a well-rounded curriculum. The foundation that is being provided is well worth the financial investment.
We are parents of children at Powhatan. All you have to do is spend time with the caring staff or enter a classroom, and you will realize what you are getting for your tuition. My children have always "loved" every teacher they have had to date at Powhatan. They never want to miss a day from school. From Spanish, to Art, to Music, to the Sports, in addition to core curriculum, your children will more than liklely thrive. The small class environment affords your child extra attention that helps a ton.
I am surprised to see a couple negative reviews for this school. We have been here 2 yrs - switched from another school. My daughter's ERB scores have since improved and she has developed a love for reading. The literature-based program & upper school math are simply outstanding! She actually enjoys math and writing now, two subjects that were difficult for her before coming to Powhatan. My son is also thriving at Powhatan. There are so many subjects and programs to rave about at the school. From the excellent teaching staff, the NEAL (Nature Enhanced Approach to Learning) program, exciting science projects, well-rounded approach to sports, & unique flexibility to encompass individual learning styles to the beautiful campus, small class sizes, interesting field trips, class plays, community projects and warm, welcoming environment, we couldn't be happier. And that doesn't even scratch the surface! We are definitely getting more than our money's worth. The new Head is also wonderful and will be a great asset to the school. As parents our only wish is that we could have gone to Powhatan ourselves! This review was unsolicited by the school.
Dedicated teachers, that like to challenge the students. Open minded faculty that do more that just cover the curriculum.
This school leaves alot to be desired. There are small classes but for some reason not all students are getting enough individual attention. My son did not do well in this environment as there appears to be lots of favoritism in the classrooms. I do not feel that I obtained anything even close to my expectations. Not worth the money and as others have reviewed there are better opportunities available in the area.
This School has mixed reviews because it does not treat students equally. If you read the reviews it is apparent that the experiences are not equal. There is nothing special about this school in comparison to others in the local area. We feel it is not worth the money an as you can see that is common thread. Research carefully and take references here.
I have been so thrilled with my daughter's experience at Powhatan School in Boyce, Va. The communication from the school to the parents is exceptional with school wide weekly e-newsletters and weekly classroom teacher updates. Their motto is 'We learn not for school, but for life.' It is also through life experiences that that the students learn. For example, in my daughter's class, the school bee keeper brought honeycombs and a honey press to the classroom for the students to experience. Students also plant their own classroom gardens. These are examples of some of the ways the school utilizes its NEAL (Nature-Enhanced Approach to Learning) program. Powhatan teaches students about sustainable living through an active recycling and composting program, as well as Geothermal heating in building construction. The school is educating students for the ever changing world and giving them tools to be a positive change agent for their community. Older students are paired up with younger students for reading time, lunch gatherings and other events. Students volunteer in the community and raise money for national charities. Students are encouraged to excel to their highest level of personal achievement. Students move at their own rate through the curriculum. The small student teacher ratios allow teachers to work with each student's strengths and weaknesses. I feel that my daughter is an individual who is know, and nurtured at Powhatan.
Read the reviews. This school relies too heavily on parental involvement they are not producing for your finanical investment at all. For your child to succeed your involvement is huge - at that level you would be better to home school or save your money and use the public system. This school is not worth the money at all.
School is OK if you do not have high expectation for kids. But we do not expect to send kids to this Private school and be happy with average return and as a result return in investment is average. Brace yourself for a lot of involvement kids education if your expectation is high.
Powhatan is a fantastic school. Tucked away in Boyce it enjoys the surroundings of an Ivy League campus for grades K-8. From the Principle, teachers and PPA and incredible parent involvement, this school provides a home away from home for the students as well as for the parents. The student to teacher ratio is one of a kind. Powhatan's unique literature based academics and everyday math program provides for a good old fashion yet challenging academic program. There is focus on loving to learn rather than learning for the test. The camaraderie amongst the students is unparalleled through their buddy programs between upper and lower school. In a program with an approximate size of 250 students, I can say the students are like a family supporting each other and helping each other in team effort in both play and work.
