Montessori does not emphasis "homework" like a traditional school. However, children do have work to complete every day. Which I know increases at the elementary level as well.

One of the best parts about Montessori education is that the children are treated as individuals, and their needs/skill levels are taken into account by the teacher. When you treat children with respect, they will in turn learn how to treat others with respect.

Having attended a traditional school myself, I really wanted my children to experience an educational environment in which they are encouraged to work at their own pace and develop a love for learning. This is exactly what the Accredited Montessori education that The Boyd School has provided for my kids. They love going to school every day and are able to dive head first into whatever their interests are that day. I also love that the school organizes after school extracurriculars for the students in addition to aftercare, as this helps to alleviate some of the pressures that come from DC traffic & commuting. While there have been some teacher changes this year, if history holds true, the new teachers will be just as warm and welcoming as ever.

We love Boyd for our 2 kids. We have been part of the Boyd family for the past 4 years and we love it. The teachers are all Montessori certified and the classes are small so each child gets personal attention from knowledgeable staff. The director, Garrett Wilhelm, is extremely friendly and really cares about each student. The school itself is very clean and large with 2 playgrounds, a soccer field, and a large great room with a stage. There are also many extracurricular activities offered after classes including ballet, soccer, piano, guitar, etc. I've seen amazing growth from our kids after starting at Boyd. I highly recommend Boyd to any family. We are very pleased to be a part of the Boyd family.

Every parent wants their child to have that teacher. You know, the one that your child loves & admires & wishes to please. You know, the one that entertains & inspires & encourages your child to reach his/her potential. You know, the one that prepares your child for the next level & fosters a love for learning. We traveled an hour every day for this teacher & it was well worth it. My only regret is that my child did not have more years with this teacher.

We are very happy with the The Boyd School! Before we enrolled our child at the school, we did our own research had heard about some of the issues parents were having with the administration but we never heard any criticism of the teachers. I have read all the reviews posted on this site and I can honestly say that we have not seen or experienced any issues. The school environment is very welcoming and warm. Everyone at the school cares about each child and their development both socially and academically. The school has a new director (since the summer) who has worked very hard to further promote the school community and parent participation/involvement. I believe the school has heard parents' feedback and is working very hard to ensure that the parents are getting the support from the administration and has done a great job in hiring the new director.

Our daughter has been at Boyd now for 3.5 years toddler, primary and now kindergarten. I can t imagine her anywhere else (and we have looked more than once at other options in the area). The classrooms have excellent ratios of adults to children, parents drop ins are welcomed, older children are encouraged to help mentor the younger children in a room teaching valuable communications, community, team and sharing skills. My child now has a strong sense of confidence, independence and a willingness to try learning ANYTHING. Children are guided to ensure that topics are covered throughout the course of a day, and they are empowered with choice in selecting the duration or sequence of tasks. The education is not just about the core (SOL) topics. As a 5 year old she knows geography, world cultures, basics of sciences, and elements of history. In addition to her astounding ability to read and do math I remember doing MUCH later in my education. Most importantly, she is HAPPY to be at school. She loves to explore and learn and will grab a dictionary to look up a new word, or design an experiment in our kitchen. She mopes when the school is closed for winter break or a holiday.

Our oldest son has been with the Boyd school since primary. He is now in the upper elementary program and I cannot say enough good thing about the school. We have compared other private schools around the area but seems like most other private schools are only concern on sending my kids to TJ. While I don't mind if my kid goes to TJ, being a score-chaser is not the kind of education that I want for my kids. The Boyd school mixes pure Montessori teaching with traditional material (like Math and Science) well. Highly recommended.

The Boyd School has been a great place for my son to experience the joy of preschool. He has made many new friends, and all of the staff are certified Montessori teachers who genuinely care about the growth and development of students. I have been very pleased with the experience that my son has had and look forward to continuing to be a part of the wonderful Boyd community.

We are beyond please with the toddler and primary teachers! They are nurturing and attentive to each child. We had very high expectations and so far they have met them all. We have nothing but positive things to say about Boyd's at Westfields!

Our association with this school has been since the past three years. We have enjoyed the professionalism of the teachers and office staff during this time.Just like a beautiful house does not become a home without a warm family, a beautiful school needs a warm community to thrive. It is this community that makes this school so special. The parent community is active and welcomed in all areas of the school. It is a delight to walk into the school every morning, and see warm friendly welcoming smiles from all. The children are kind, compassionate and are being ingrained in the Montessori philosophy of love and tolerance towards all. They are challenged daily and pursue a strong curriculum in all spheres. It is certainly a better choice for us than a traditional 'one fit for all' model. The teachers have left a lasting impression on the children.

Every school has its selling point, and at Boyd, it is the Teachers! At least at the El & Upper El levels. Our 7 yr old has attended two other schools, and we have always picked the school based on the teacher(s), not the other way around - so our school rating is based on that. As high as our expectations were going in, the main teacher has managed to surprise us positively. Yes, our son is challenged to perform at higher levels, but it is also done with a good balance of nurturing/ caring & sternness, appropriate at his level. We are also pleased with the other teachers - in particular, the Science and Music teachers are both par excellence - you only need to attend one of the science fairs or festivals to see how well the students are coached and encouraged, and the advanced science experiments and music compositions they come up with mostly on their own. The School has a strong STEM program. That said, the only negative I can think of is that there is too much of a cost focus at the school which leads to a negative comparison to other schools (like fewer field trips, e.g.). The school has appointed a new administrator this year, so I am hoping that this improves going forward

We have been at this school for three years and have experienced teachers in both the primary side and the elementray side. The school is balanced more heavily on primary (i.e. kindergarten and younger) and they do a great job there. Our children thrived and were challenged in the primary curriculum. Our experience on the elementary side has not been the same. We noticed that certain students are favored and have more individual teacher time and attention. Other students are left to determine for themselves how to conduct their work. We were pleased with the school when comparing to other kindergarten & younger educational/care settings and endorse the school for their primary program. The school needs to do a lot of work to improve on the elementary side. I believe we aren't the only parents who think so, given there are approximately 5 primary classrooms and 1 elementary classroom. Farifax and Loundon county schools are very competitive with Boyd at the elementary level - without the hefty tuition. It's obviously a personal choice. I would suggest visiting more than once and speaking with parents during pick up time for honest parental feedback before making a choice.

I have three children at the Boyd School. One is in Middle School class and the other two are in Lower Elementary. My Middle School child has excelled and have grown past our expectations. Both kids in the lower elementary class have done well and are both challenged daily to explore their passions and are truly happy learning! The teachers and staff are dedicated in what they do and have a true understanding of the Montessori philosophy. At the Boyd School there is a warm, friendly environment by all staff members, they also try to foster community events to enhance the experience. Upper and Lower Elementary participate in activities like walk for water and the Mathaton , teaching the kids a sense of helping in the community and helping others Submitted by a parent

As a parent, I am extremely happy with the Boyd School. Both of my sons went there from Preschool through the 3rd grade. It was worth every penny of the tuition. Great Montessori environment, very friendly and caring. The building is spacious, nicely lit, clean and secure. The teachers are fantastic. The school offers high quality Music classes, Art, Spanish, PE, Science as part of the curriculum, plus variety of after-school activities (soccer, chess, dance, yoga, ballet, French, Percussion, etc.) Hot catered lunches are a big plus. It took me a lot of time to choose the right school for my kids and I was not disappointed with our selection.

Our preschool age children truly enjoy going to school here. They have become more independent when it comes to dressing themselves and getting organized for school, thanks to the emphasis placed on practical life skills. They are also more helpful with household tasks, respectful of boundaries and increasingly self-aware and considerate of others. We are constantly amazed by how much they are processing the lessons and their ability to relate what they are learning to their daily lives. Their teachers are very attentive and know how to engage our kids and guide them through the learning process. The director is very approachable and knows our children by name. This school works hard to create a family atmosphere. Overall, we are thrilled knowing that our kids are a part of the Boyd School family.

I will never recommend anyone to send their children at Westfield Boyd school. I am very disappointed at the teacher's treatments towards my son. Teacher is very cold/ rude and not being cooperative with parents. But she thinks she is the world best teacher.

My two daughters started the school three years ago (beginning in the toddler room and transitioned to the primary class). They enjoy learning, LOVE the teachers, and are happy going to school everyday! The school is year-round and they have a great Montessori program. The teachers are caring and dedicated and follow "the whole child"- not just the academics. The admin has been supportive of all my family's needs. I plan to continue sending my girls to school because this environment best suits them and they love it! It makes me happy to see the progress (socially, intellectually, emotionally, and physically) in the three years we have been here. I recommend this school to all our family and friends because I couldn't be any happier than here at The Boyd School.

After convincing my husband to send our daughter to the Boyd for their primary program and spending over $30k ( a car!), I can honestly say this was the biggest waste of money and THE worst investment I have ever made. My daughter is now in second grade and in public school and I can't say the Montessori program at Boyd did anything to help further her education. We would have been better off sending her to public school or kindergarten and saved the $10kplus and put her in extra lessons after school. The last year we were there was absolutely the worst! Our teacher left mid-year and the teacher that replaced her was a glorified babysitter. The school is in a very convenient area for us and the facilities are nice and even though I now have younger children, I will never send another child back to this school. Such a shame too because this was once a very very prestigious school in the area, it was THE school to send your child to. It's no longer seen that way. I think the economy, under appreciation of the staff and plain mismanagement by the ownership is to blame. Needless to say, I do not recommend sending your child to the Boyd.

Our daughter has been in this school for the past almost one year and we have been thrilled with the progress we have seen. Her teachers are exceptional and there has not been any change in her teachers since she started in the primary class. They are warm and caring and they do shake hands as mentioned in another review. However, they also hug and show much compassion for their students. My daughter has been so happy since starting at this school. Being a montessori parent I am able to see that her teachers really do follow a true montessori philosophy of teaching. We are quite happy with our decision to send her to Boyd.

My son attended the Boyd School for about a year and although he started with a great teacher, his class cycled through 3 different teachers without giving any notification to the parents and I lost count of how many different assistants. They are not interested in helping the student and like other parents have said "no teacher engagement and poor education." I am very dissapointed in this school and it is a tarnish on the Montessori name - as I once highly respected it. The only positive is the food included with the tuition and the facility; however, that is not reason enough for any parent to send their child here. Don't waste your childs' time or precious mind at this place .

My daughter was at their pre primary (3-5) for 3 wks and we have to pull her out. The teachers were VERY cold and unfriendly. No hugs just hand shakes. This school would be great for kids that are use to being with nanny/daycare situation from when they are very young so this did not work for us. My daughter was only there for half day and she would be be cowering in a corner and runs to the door when she sees me. It was heartbreaking and very upsetting for a parent to see. We ended up paying the 3 month penalty just so we can take her out of that school. It happened to another family as well and the father found us online. They were told that my daughter was a "danger" so she was let go.... Very disorganized there as well since somehow I continue to get updates from them. Guess kids have to switch teachers in the middle of the school year or something like that My daughter is now in a different school. Very happy and thriving!!!!!

The teachers are great and very dedicated. I am sending my child to this school only coz the teacher is good. But the adminstration is hopeless. They are just there to listen to you, but do not have any power to do anything in response. The after care is one of the most poorly managed place I have ever seen. Totally in-expericed care givers. I am very very frustrated.

I do not recommend the Boyd School, I had a terrible experience. The Boyd School is not a true Montessori School. They are not AMI Certified and they don't truly follow the Montessori methods. I withdrew my child after 5 months due to the lack of teacher engagement and the poor quality of education my child was receiving. My child has been in Montessori for over three years, but regressed at the Boyd School. The facility is nice and the meals included in the price of tuition is a nice feature. However, the Teachers seem stressed and the Administration priority is the bottom-line. I witnessed conflict between the Teachers and Administration. My child had six different Teachers in a five month time span. The Teachers and the Administration are condescending and will not answer direct questions. The Boyd School is one highest priced pre-schools, therefore I expected a higher quality, but what I experienced was the exact opposite. The Teachers were cold and unhappy. That type of environment reflected onto the students. I moved my child to another Montessori school. My child is excelling in the other school and is happier than at the Boyd School.

The teachers are EXCEPTIONAL! My child has attended The Boyd School (Westfield) for several years. This could be a truly great school if the owners would support the staff and provide the funding to fix and upgrade the materials and support the teachers with the equipment and supplies that are needed to run the class rooms.

The administration of this school is ONLY concerned about $ and the bottom line. There is currently no director at the Westfields campus because the previous director wanted to do what was right for the children, and the administration wouldn't listen. Although some of the teachers are great, they aren't allowed to truly focus on the children because of the administrative fiascos. Just ask about the recent drop in enrollment and that will be a clue about what direction this school is headed. They also aren't AMI certified and don't truly follow a Montessori program so don't be fooled if that's what you are looking for.

My daughter has been at the Boyd school for three years now, and we absolutely love it. The teachers are dedicated and are really interested in bringing out the best in each student. The school also gives the students a lot of exposure to non-traditional forms of learning, like guest lecturers, field trips, etc. Also, love the large classrooms, and the variety of learning material, which truly make for a great learning experience. My daughter can t wait to get to school each morning, and I think that speaks volumes for the quality of education here.
