My daughter attends Charles City Elementary school and she loves it. The principal, as well as all of the staff are very attentive to the students needs. They are very family oriented. Most principals only know faces, this principal knows names as well. I too was very worried about sending my child to school in Charles City. However, I am no longer worried and proud that my daughter attends school there. My only suggestion to parents whose child attends ANY school...get involved and stay involved. This makes a world of difference. Please whatever you do, don't send your child to school without any knowledge, respect for others or discipline. A teachers job is already difficult enough, it is not there job to rear your children.
POOR NO SUMMER SCHOOL THIS YEAR AT ALL POOR, POOR
I have a child that attends Charles City schools. He will be entering the middle school this school year. I have had a wonderful experience with this school system. The principle is very involved as are the teachers. I agree that your child will not be a number but will be an individual helped by all starting with the caring bus drivers, school nurses, cafateria staff, teachers, principle and numerous other staff members. My child has ADHD and I think he would be lost in any other school system. I send out praise to the Charles City school system for the wonderful care and education they are helping my child achieve.
I graduated from the Charles City School system 27 years ago. I have witnessed the improvements and the failures within the school system now. I have three children now attending. Two in highschool and one in Elementary. I have spent time volunteering, and have seen the struggles the Teacher have to endure everyday. Instead of Parents blaming Charles City for their children not receiving a proper education, or having to send their child to a priviate school, each one need to take a close look at their childs behavior. How can a teacher teach or a student learn, if some of the children do not behave. It is not the Teachers place to provide babysitting for your child. It is to Teach your child.
If you can avoid this district, I would highly reccomend it! Even though a wonderful principal took over leadership this year, she is hindered by an dominating administration who are not aware of updated teaching practices. Most of the teachers are also wonderful, but are restricted because of the administration. My child attended this school for 2 years, and I now work 2 jobs so that I can pay tuition for a wonderful richmond school.
I have seen this school through my own eyes. I would recommend that they get better teachers and pay the good ones that are there more to keep them. I agree with the other parents comments about a family affair. This county seems to do that in all aspects of its leadership, from the School Board, Police office, Board of Supervisors, to the schools.
No...Charles City is not a mini Yale or Harvard, but it offers something that you cannot get outside of this cruel world-sincerity. The teachers are passionate to what they do with and for the students and basically they care about their futures.(I know because they took a keen interest in mine!)So if you want your child to be known as another number then this is not the school for you, but if you want your child to be in a safe, nourishing and above all an educating environment, then there is no better place to be!
I had to move out of the county to get an education for my children. More money is spent on improving the appearance of the school then what is spent on the child sitting in the classroom. The adminisrative staff is top heavy, leaving no funds to educate the children.
Charles City needs to work on all levels of its education. The quality of education provided by these schools from the ground level to graduation leaves a lot to be desired. When this system starts taking itself more seriously and professionally then it just might do something. It's a county school, that doesn't mean country bumpkin! They need more outside people working within the school system as it seems it's become a family affair and ideas seem to have stagnated.
