I am a Highschool Senior currently at AHS. What is true about our school is we do have "wonderful clubs & athletic programs", but what about the kids who dont want to persue there highschool years in the football team, or the drama club. They get lost in the shuffle, which every guidance counselor is aware of, but will never say at a meeting. I am currently in a peer group, and we have met very often with kids that feel left out, yet i feel that some counselors and teachers that are aware of this, could care less. Or just decide that they will "find a place". We are a great school, with huge numbers! Yet we could try and show every student that we can be a great school. I have loved my 3 soon to be 4 years at AHS,and hope that every student feels the same:)

Western Albemarle High School is an excellent school compared to Albemarle High School, AHS has a drug issue & sever overcrowding & an overall terrible reputation.

I dont know what school people are looking into when writing these reviews, AHD is horrbile. they only look out for affluent rivh kids, not the common or poor child.

Albemarle is a good school, however, the school is too crowded and your student is likely to be lost in the shuffle if they aren't A+ students.

As a military family, we have experienced several school systems across the country. This school, and the community and parent support it receives, is outstanding!

I agree with the posting of October 10th. The school climate is one that does not support the student who is 'marked as middle'. The school only offers AP, Honers and then an Academic level. This Academic level class does not support the college bound 'B' student, but is there is support the achivement gap sutdnets.

I had 2 children in Albemarle HS. There are some teachers there who are very talented. However, the school is too crowded & the student-teacher ratio is pushing the limits. There were times I sent emails to teachers & because they're so overwhelmed, they couldn't email back within the prescribed 24-48 hrs. There were a couple of teachers who never showed up for Back-to-School night or Parent/Teacher Conference night..ever. I 'loved' that one of the guidance counselors didn't even know the name of my child. Yes, AHS has 'award-winning' clubs & athletics and I discovered that communication for these endeavors are pretty decent. So, why can't the same effort be applied to academics, which are the main reason the kids are in school in the first place?

Albemarle High School is improving every day. The faculty and staff work hard to make the school experience rewarding for all students. In this day in age, high schools have many challenges and this school is meeting many of the challenges. Get involved in your child's school and you will learn a great deal about today's education.

I have two children at AHS. I have been impressed with the rigor of the honors/AP courses and the dedication of the teachers, who are quite willing to spend extra time helping students, coaching them for the SAT, etc. The instrumental music program is exceptional, with 3 levels of concert bands, a marching band, and a jazz band that has won top honors in state and national competitions. The drama program has won state and national awards, as has the history program. Sports are managed by an award-winning athletic director. There are dozens of clubs, and students are welcome to form new ones to fit their interests. This is an extraordinarily talented and diverse group of students who get along well with one another. There is a friendly and energetic new principal who is trying to make the school administration more parent-friendly. The PTO has recently been re-established.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Virginia used the Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course tests to assess students in reading, writing, math, science and history/social science subjects at the end of each course, regardless of the student's grade level. The SOL End-of-Course tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Virginia. High school students must pass at least six SOL End-of-Course tests to graduate. The goal is for all students to pass the tests.
