For whatever reason, my previous post was deleted or reported. I agree with the March 2014 parent regarding struggling child. Last year our experience was horrible, but this year the complete opposite. So, I guess it all goes back to the personality or effectiveness of the teacher. This school acts like its a magnet school and the majority of emphasis is placed on exceeding other schools in SOL testing and less emphasis on children developing and being kids.
Cedar Road Elementary is a wonderful school with caring staff and teachers that go above-and-beyond everyday. My first-grader started school at a beginning first grade reading level and is now ending the year reading at a third grade level! All of the teachers we know in the school have been at CRE for years and love what they do. The PTA is very active and regularly provides additional scholastic and recreational programs for the students. We also appreciate the overall feeling of community in the school between all the students from Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Overall friendly teachers and staff. However, If you have a child that struggles sometime in their learning experience, don't expect the appropriate help, nor detailed communication. The teacher will take serious action without involving the parents. A frustrated teacher means a bad experiences for the child and parents. disappointed.
I love this school. My kids especially love this school which makes me happy. They have had wonderful teachers and the parent involvement is amazing! I'd pay extra for a home in this area for the school.
We moved to this area 10 years ago so our oldest could start kindergarten at Cedar Road Elementary. She had the best teachers and was very prepared for Middle school. Our youngest is now in fourth grade and I'm as happy with his education as I was with hers!! I highly recommend this school if you are trying to decide where to live in order for your child a great public school experience and education!!
I love CRE! The school surpassed my expectations of public school. I am glad that they have not conformed into the isolated model of schools today. The employees are happy, sincere, and still care. God is still touching this schools heart! I was surprised that for Kindergarten my 5 year old was behind because he couldn't read site words and such starting out. By the end of the year he was fine, but I had only taught him letters, numbers, how to spell his name, colors, and shapes. I apparently was delusional about the requirements of todays youth. I do not like that the primary focus is on SOL scores and not learning for the long run. That is more of a state wide problem than a school specific issue. We had no problems with violence or unruly children. This school rocks!
Ms Powell remains to be an amzing teacher. She was my daughters teacher in 2007-2008 school year. She is now my sons teacher and she is simply one of the greatest teachers of all! Great asset to Cedar Road Elementary!
Great school with a small-town feel. VERY active parents and PTA. I have three children attending school at CRE and I couldn't be happier.
Great school love the teacher's and staff they really go above and beyond to help your children in their learning experience great programs for the kids to learn very family oreinted school
This school is great! My daughter started Kindergarten there this year and I am amazed how at how far she has come along. Mrs. Harrington and her assistant, Mrs. Russell are fantastic. They really care about each individual student and getting any extra help they may need. I feel like my daughter was challenged; however, never left behind even when she was having a difficult time. Great communication with parents and the school offers SO much extra for the kids to do. We've had a great year! Thank you. Great teachers make a world of difference!
My grandson is in the first grade at 'CRE' Cedar Road Elem. The entire staff is friendly and helpful to all the children, parents, and grandparents. My grandson looks forward to school each day!
From the principal and teachers, all the way to the lunch ladies and the custodians - every employee at Cedar Road Elementary (CRE)School strives to create a warm and nurturing environment that allows children to feel safe and leaves them eager to learn. I genuninely believe that the staff always keeps best interest of the students of CRE at the heart of every decision.
I have a stepson attending another Chesapeake school, but in the same grade as my son. Comparing the two schools it is easy to see that CRE is a highly academic and challenging school. A lot more is expected at this school than in other Chesapeake schools at the same grade level.
My daughter's Kindergarten teacher has a master's degree in reading, there are 2 teachers in the classroom for 16 children, the PTA is hoping to have 100% PTA membership for all parents. I've never seen so many fundraiser fliers or parent involvement opportunities. The PTA is currently trying to earn money to have multimedia equipment in every classroom to facilitate learning. They have a computer lab where children play learning games every week. During Christmas time all the children wore their p.j.s to school and brought their favorite stuffed animal. Everyone listened with their animals while the principle read a version of the Polar Express over the intercom and then they had hot chocolate or chocolate milk and cookies. They want the children to love coming to school and work very hard to create a warm fun environment to encourage healthy, excited learning. I've been amazed!
My son has been attending CRE since kindergarten and is now in 3rd grade. His teachers have been wonderful and are great with sending home detailed feedback on his performance. There are opportunities for after school clubs as well as lots of PTA sponsored events. I highly recommend this school.
My son has been going here since kindergarten and is no in 4th grade. The staff is wonderful, yet stern. The academics are superior to most and extremely challenging. If you are an absentee parent, this may not be the school for you as there is much parent/student involvment.
Wondeful School! I have sent three children to this school and I have absolutely no complaints. Teachers and staff are great. Any problem is taken care of promptly.
We chose to buy a house in the CRE school district after researching/visiting 6 schools in VB and Chesapeake. We were very particular since our child has special ed needs. We have seen marked improvement in our child in the past year that we have been here. Great teachers, teacher aides and supported by the administration.
This school is outstanding! the staff is wonderful. This is my daughter's second year; at first I could not believe all the support from parents and teachers. I have always been involved in my children s education, I have never been to or heard of a school that you have to go to the pat meeting early so you will have a seat and a parking place- the support is unbelievable
I was nervous moving to a new state last year because I was leaving a good elementary school and I was scared to move my daughter so far away and not know what to expect. She ended up at Cedar Roads and it was the GREATEST experience for her. Unfortunately, we had to move again after her 2nd grade year but we miss the school dearly. It was fantastic! Her teacher Ms. Hollomon was so great with her and the whole class. She recognized that my daughter was a new student and made her feel very comfortable from day 1. We even got a letter in the mail at our new address that welcomed her to the school, and she loved that. Also, the YMCA after school program was great. Ms. Cheryl made sure it was! You won't go wrong with this school.
