Faculty/Staff TRULY care for these children and their education.
The teachers are very involved with the students. The principal and Asst Principal is very involved with the students, always doing some type of activities with the school and very one on one when need to be. At least once a month there is some type of activity at the school for the kids to participate in/be involved in. Kids are constanly doing something for the school...Current day lessons are based on current day holidays, special occassions.
I love that there are monthly (if not more) activities for the parents and children to become involved in together. Teachers are very friendly, SOL scores are high, and staffers know ALL children by name. I love the closeness of this community driven school.
My son has been a student at Achilles for the last four years. His fours years there have all been wonderful. The small class size is great. He had perfect scores on all his SOL's along with most of his class. Great teachers, clean building!
This school needs a major over-haul. The teachers lack motivation and enthusiasm and many of the parents refuse involvement with their children. We are not sure how long we will be here, particularly since Achilles is taking on students from a nearby elementary school under renovation. I would love to see more emphasis on developing well-rounded and bright children, not high SOL scores.
Last year was my son's first year at Achille's. I was not overlly impressed, as he had a wonderful head start teacher that was hard to live up to. This year he is in first grade and I'm pleased to say that his teacher has done a wonderful job. My son is reading above and beyond what I could ever imagine. The response from the teacher is immediate. If ever a problem or a question I feel that she is always there to answer it.
My experience has been a great one. The staff has been great, especially Ms. Wiggs my daughter's k teacher. My daughter began the year speaking and reading in Spanish. It is amazing how well she is speaking and reading in English. The county was not prepared for an esl student, so they placed her with Ms. Wiggs who can speak Spanish. Next year, the county will be more prepared because they are hiring an esl teacher.
