I give Alvey a 2-star rating; mostly because of the lack of substantive learning . The higher learners are not challenged; only get the one day a week in a gifted program that does not tie into their primary classroom curriculum; they are singled out instead of being included at a highter level in the curriculum of the day. The Principal gets high marks from others because she is friendly and surrounds herself with those that LOVE her and her position, so they communicate to others what a wonderful job she seems to be doing. Her abysmal (sp?) record of aiding a child in need that is challenged both socially and developmentally, stands out in my mind. She only acted after being threatened with a state advocate....it is all about appearances. My son had a substitute teacher most of 5th grade. The school is very pretentious. Math program is horrible.
My family loves this school. My daughter has been at the school for the past four years and is getting ready to graduate. My son has been at the school for two years and my youngest will be starting there next year. We love the principals and teachers. It has been a wonderful school to be a part of.
JW Alvey has an excellent math and science program that feeds to one of the best science High Schools in the country Battlefield. ROBOCATs at battelfield were #2 in the country in the FIRST robotics competition again.
The school is okay. The quality of learning is average and the kids do not always seem challenged, more busywork than attention to subject matter. Reading comprehension is great, math very poor.
No school is perfect I suppose, but Alvey comes pretty close. They are providing a very safe, fun atmosphere with high expectations for the kids academically.
This is my last year at this wonderful school. I will definitely miss this wonderful group of people. From the administrators to and including the children, this is a great school. We thought our other school was just great, but when were transferred to this school wow there are not enough words to express how we feel about this great experience. We as a family are very fortunate to be a part of this great school. Everyone is willing to help, nothing is left to chance and if there are any issues they are resolved immediately. We just love J. W. Alvey.......
After visiting the prestigious private schools in the area and then Alvey, it was clear that the most well-rounded child would emerge from Alvey. That has been the case with our sons, hands-down. Kudos to Alvey for my sons' education!
Excellent school, we love it, and more to the point, my son loves it! Teachers and staff are friendly, energetic and excited to be there as are the children. Great parental involvement, good choice of extracurricular activities: chess club, singing, scouts, etc.
We were affected by the boundary changes in 2004/2005 school year. We fought it all the way, but what a wonderful place to be transferred too. This school has the best staff, students and parents. I have never experienced this level of understand and helpfulness. This is a wonderful school.
J. W. Alvey is providing a top-notch education to students. We moved to the area because of the great schools. The principal provides outstanding leadership, and the staff reinforces good citizenship of all students. Parent volunteers are plentiful. I am an educator myself, and I am very impressed with the quality of the curriculum and programs at Alvey.
