I cannot be happier with the quality of education my child is receiving at this school, not to mention after school with the variety of enrichment classes. The teachers are all very devoted and do a wonderful of catering to the unique population of Coates.
My son just finished second grade at Coates. He loves his school, his teachers and his classmates. The teachers are very supportive and provides ample encouragement to the kids and he is all praises about them. He is a very shy kid but has a diverse group of friends who support each other, he helps those who struggle in reading and loves to compete with those who do well on math and spelling which are his favorite subjects. I am extremely happy to see him flourish in this environment. Parent involvement is key in the success of the kids and I provide as much support as I can while managing my busy work schedule. I look forward to another year in this great school.
The children at this school are extremely over sexualized. I have severe bullying problems for my daughter in sixth grade. She has been called very vulgar, rude, and racist names. My family and I plan to move next month. In the mean time, she will be homeschooled.
My son loves his school and learning lot of new things daily. I am happy to join him in this school
My child just started kindergarten so my review is based on a very brief experience. I really love how the school feels, clean, bright and happy! I love the teacher, who responded to my email the same day I wrote it. I also love all of the technology they have available in the school. During the open house, various programs were presented, such as the PTA, and I got the impression that things are definitely moving in the right direction. I am looking forward to the Back to School Night when we can find out more about the academic standards.
Coates Elementary has always been a great school. I am not sure why there are negative reviews about the school. Teachers and Staffs at the school are very helpful and cooperative. My both kids (daughter and son) go to the school. Teachers are knowledgeable and always appreciate students to perform good in the class. The school always organizes different evening activities that helps students to get involved in the events and have fun. I would personally like to be thankful of the Principal, Teachers, and Staffs about their excellent service for the school.
Can't wait to change my address so my kid could go to a different school! Last week the school had the "Thanksgiving Luncheon" and the parents were invited to have lunch with their kids at the cafeteria. The students were with the assistant teachers, the actual teacher was having lunch in the Teacher's Lounge and, considering the ocassion, I expected at least that she could appear at some point to greet the parents....it never happened. Also, one of the assistants was speaking in a bad tone to one of the kids, in front of us! If that kind of tone is used in front of the parents, what can be expected when we're not there? Don't like this school at all, for this and other situations in which the teacher tell us that a "situation" happened during the day, but do not clarify and implies that the kid was in fault. We, as parents, have to take the role of private investigators to try to find was is wrong and what really happened during the school day. The assistants and have no experience working with special needs kids. Since we moved to this area, and my kid is attending this school, I hate Sunday nights, just anticipating what will happen to my kid during the following week at school.
We love this school and I can walk my daughter there from my condo and it's been a fabulous experience. I can't say enough about this school!
Excellent School and Great Teachers.Principal Karen Siple has handpicked the right teachers for the right job. My child started last year and has learned so much.We are very happy with the school.
What a great school. My child started last year and has learned so much. We turned down gifted center to stay, knowing he will learn more at Coates. We told family members to move nearby to get to go here.

This is an awesome preschool! My son went there for the Parents' Morning Out , 3 Year Old and 4 Year Old Classes. Having a boy with a late birthday, I was concerned about his preparation for elementary school. However, the staff at GHELC totally eliminated any worries I had. My son was more than ready for kindergarten when he finished preschool. In fact he had almost a perfect score on his entrance benchmark test the second week of kindergarten! His entrance scores were higher than the benchmark for the testing done at the end of the kindergarten year!! I attribute this to the professional staff at GHELC. The smaller class sizes allow needed one-on-one instruction. The staff is also experienced and educated in preschool education. They are also very caring and dedicated to each and every student. I would recommend them over any preschool in Chesapeake.
I am currently a staff member of five years. I have had my three children enrolled over the years since 1998. Even before I came to work at GHELC, I loved the staff. It's a traditional school with a small town feel. Each one of the children are appreciated for who they are. The atmosphere is amazing and the school is excellent!
This is our 5th year involved with Good Hope and my second child attending. I couldn't ask for a better school for my children. I drive 15 minutes one way and pass many preschools - I would never choose another over GHELC!
GHELC is wonderful! My daughter had an awful experience at a bigger school and she wasn't ready for kindergarten. I held her back and she went to the 5 day a week class with Clare Stefan and Diane Osborne. She finished the year doing addition, subtraction and she can read shorter words! She is confident and egar to learn. I wish I'd have taken her to GHELC instead of the big school the first time around. I will be enrolling my son as soon as he's old enough!
