Worst experience of my daughters school years. she had to relocate in order to graduate on time class of 2008. If at all possible move to Chesterfield or Henrico school systems. Your child will be safer and you will have peace of mind.

My son is going into the 7th grade this year and has seem to adjust well the CGW. He was terrified of beginning his middle school years there because of the reputation. I can say that the teachers my son had were very good for HIM because they challenged him at all times. He has always been an Honor Student and seems to get things easy. With that being said, I felt at times that he was not getting some help from the teachers when he needed it because they assumed "He Had It". Also, you call the guidance department and ask for a return call from the counselor or attendence personnel and they NEVER return your call. Other than these few "quarks", my son has had a wonderful experience starting out his middle school years. Hopefully this will continue into this next year.

With each year that my son attended this school, I became increasingly disappointed. There is no encouragement /support for parent invovlement. The school's culture is to 'talk the talk' but definitely does not 'walk the walk.' They patronize the parents by asking for your help, and when you do provide help and suggestions, they simply dismiss you. Likewise, they do not provide help, encouragement, learning, support, and guidance to your child. In fact, you will learn that they simply pass the students from grade to grade. Then expect the parent to be grateful that thier child is on honor roll but can't explain why your child is incapable of writing a coherent paragraph. Simply put, your child will be taught to pass the SOLs. Your child will be experts at fill in the blanks, multiple choice, spell check, and calculator usage. That is all one can expect from this school.

Unfortunately this school seems to be run more by the students than the administrators and teachers. It would be such an improvement to see teachers and staff take more responsibility for the students.

The school is more worried about minor things, like kids wearing under shirts(white t's) and flip flops, than they are about 'all' the hateful things kids do to each other, 'too much is just let go, pushed under a rug. If you ask me, I think more than half of the staff at the school are afraid of the kids, so they just let it go. But what's a teacher to do, when, Parents send there kids to school with no home training. It's A mix, I suppose, of the school needing to tightin' up, and take care of what's most imporant first, And the parents..needing take care of your kids, teach them right from wrong, Be a role model, someone positive for them to look up too. That is your job! This will be my childs last year at carter.g. and I'm so glad!!

I am a student at Carter G. Woodson and the school is awesome. We rarely have conflicts and our extracurricular activites are getting even better. Our staff and faculty at CGW is the best. The honor students and the regular education students are never separated. Honor and Regular Education students have most of the same teachers. From my point of view being a student I think the parental involvement is perfect. I am glad to be a student there. It is wonderful!
