Great little school. I feel like my child is getting an excellent education there. Test scores are always high. It has a very active PTA and a lot of parent involvement. McLean has a lot of parents who are professionals and were high academic achievers themselves so school is a high priority for most parents here. The teachers my child has had have all been excellent and very dedicated. It seems like there's been a lot of teacher turnover in the last couple years, and some really amazing veteran teachers have left. There are usually 2 classes of each grade, but the school is small so they sometimes have to have split classes when there are not enough kids to fill two classes of a grade. That means they might have one class that is half 3rd graders and half 4th graders in the same classroom with one teacher covering both grades, along with one 3rd grade only class and one 4th grade only class. This works fine for some kids but is unsuitable for others, so there are some parents who do not like the split classes.
My children have attended Franklin Sherman for a total of 5 years. I have been pleased with the academics of the school. I've not had one bad teacher - all have been great to superior. The school is one of the smallest schools in the county and I like that! I know most of the families that attend the school since there are only 2 to 3 classes per grade. They have a wonderful new music teacher and aspiring new principal that is changing things up a bit and promoting some new and innovative things. Some of the teachers have been skeptical of the changes but I think change is always hard to adopt. They have a Gift Specialist for the school but not a full-time GT program. Children with higher test scores are often pulled out for specialized study in Math, Reading and English.
My son has been going to Frankin Sherman for 2 years now and he is in a special needs classroom and goes back/forth for specials/lunch and PE. Everyone there is very nice besides the front office staff who is kind of not so friendly on the phone. Since he has been there his test scores has almost doubled. I would say 'yes' if you are looking for a great school for your child. The principle is young and can relate to the children on their level-he is really great and has always returned my phone calls on the same day.
