The problem this school and every school in the school district has is with the "management" so to speak. The superintendent, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Director of Instructional Technology, Testing and Accountability have all been given a job that has proven to be too much for them to handle. Frivolous unfocused spending and no direct attention to the impact on students has deeply effected the ability for these schools in the district to offer the best education to their students. This can be seen be falling test scores especially in reading content areas. The school board needs to reevaluate and get back to focusing on the needs of the students instead of the wants of their directors.

I have mixed feelings about New Kent Elementary. The office staff is so helpful, and the PTO is fantastic. However, important aspect , the teachers, are a "mixed bag". A few are great, most just okay, and a few are awful! It is also really distressing that even though you are not allowed to request teachers, many people do and the same people continually get the "best" teachers. Unfortunately many kids suffer academically because of this. All children should have great teachers...there are more poor teachers here than great ones.

I have to give NKES an A+, at least in Rainbow house. My son has been there since he was 2 1/2 and he's now 5 (I held him back from K-5 because of speech). His teacher and the teacher's aid were wonderful the past few years. So far this year is going great too! I had a very close relationship with his last teacher. She kept me up to date on everything & you could tell that she loved him and her job. He does still have some issues with his speech however he's come a long way. I was a student that attended New Kent Schools & I have to tell you they have certainly come a LONG way. Reading was a problem with lots of kids I went to school with. Parents learning starts at home and if your unhappy you need to make your voice heard.

I have mixed feelings about New Kent Schools. We have two children attending this countie's school system. One is nine and at the New Kent Elementary School. The other is 12 and is at the Middle School. I feel that my middle school child has missed out alot on his reading skills. My elementary age child has done much better. As with all schools, parent involvement is a must. You must know where your child's level is and be there at homework time. It takes all I can do in the evenings, to get everything done. I am a working mother of two and am exhaulsted but, it's my responsibilty to keep on track. However; the bus situation improved greatly, 2007. I must say, that 2006 and the years before were completely out of control with the transportation department. Finally, they are not exposing the younger ones to things.

The 07-08 school year was the first for my children. They loved the school their teachers. The teachers, counselors and both principals managed to know my children as individuals often calling them out by their names, asking them how their day was and even taking the time to talk to me as I picked them up at the end of the day to me on anything he may have seen my kids doing right or wrong. I never once saw my childrens principal and have no idea what the vice prinicpal looked like at my childrens last school. NKE gave me a since of warmth and caring for our first year experience.

My daughter was switched last year from George Watkins to NKE because of the border change. NKE was excellent. The teachers were great and worked with me when I had questions about my daughters progress. My other daughter will be starting K this year and I look forward to another great year. I only wish they would have open house in the evening.

This is a small school out in the country with a lot of character. Very welcoming and everybody knows your name. New Kent has wonderful teachers and staff members and has a wonderful special needs department. I feel I have a voice at this school and see so much potential here. I love New Kent Elementary!
