This school offered a wonderful curriculum and I will give it high marks for that. However, this school seems to attract bullies and my daughter was attacked during gym class. She's never told me who the girls were (I was most definitely going to press charges) and I suspect the gym teacher was transferred because of it. The principal is very cold and uncaring and I would not send my other children to this school; this is an unsafe school where they prefer to cover-up any unpleasantness instead of correcting it. My other two children are gifted also and I sent them to Ruffner Academy where they are thriving; the children are friendly and the office staff are very warm and nice.
Meadowbrook offered the best school experience for my daughter thus far. I love the school and the principal is top notch. I feel my daughter received an excellent eductation. The teachers seem to really care for the most part; and in comparison to other schools that I've experienced, this school represents the best team of teachers in the district. In other schools there may be a teacher you like, or a counselor, but rarely the entire team.
I pushed my child into this school because the middle school we are in district for received poor reviews. After almost an entire year here, my son has been bullied, told to stay away from his friends, and was told to gain friends that are boys because the majority of his friends are girls. Communication between the school and the parents is poor. Their expectations are very high. While my son pretty much aced the SOLs in 5th grade and had never so much as visited the principal's office, he has had a very hard time at this school academically and socially.
The school is very challenging to my child, the different subjects and structure make her study more and she is more interesting in learning.
I am an eigth grade student at the school of international studies at meadowbrook. This school is very easy to me. I am a straight A student here so of course it is easy for me. It is challenging for many other fellow peers. at this school, you are able to skip the ninth grade if you have enough high school credits or you can take courses over the summer for ninth grade if you do not have enough high school credits.
My daughter graduated from Meadowbrook three years ago and is excelling in high school. Due to both of our experience at Meadowbrook, my entire family prayed that my grandson would go there. He made it! The principal was strict, yet fair and very very concern about all of the students. The teachers were caring, gave 100% of themselves to all the students, regardless of whether a child was in his or her class or not, and encouraged each and every one of kids to do their best. The kids were outstanding and the friends my daughter made there are still strong today. This school is Norfolk Public School System hidden'Jewel' and I would tell any parent, if your child is willing to work and if you can look beyond the uniforms (which I think is the thing yet), this is the place for your child.
Meadowbrook is an amazing school. Although it is very, very tough and pretty prestigious. I'm an eighth grader here and have been going here since sixth grade. I'm actually very sad and scared to leave, even though I put up that 'Whatever, can't wait to get outta here' attitude. When you first make it in, you're so frickin' excited you can't stand it! After a while, some of the teachers are so annoying you just wanna leave, but you don't. When it's your final year and graduation is around the corner, especially if you're a girl, you find yourself more upset than usual. I know for me it's because I've become so close to this school and to everyone here, even those you can't stand. I've recently found myself in tears because I'm so attatched. This school provides a closeness that you can't get anywhere but here. We love it alot.
I gave this a 4 because it is missing one crucial thing, extracurrical activies for the kids mainly athletic sports, if only they would address that and make it easier for our kids to be bussed to a school that would allow them use of their fields.
I am a student at meadowbrook and the school is awesome, by giving us such a head start. I'm only in the 8th grade and I take Spanish II, Geometry, Civics, Navy Cadests and a Keyboarding class. I look back and say 'Wow, my brother is in the 11th grade and my grammar and language is better than his and he is taking Spanish II...in the 11th grade' About the person below me, I have no idea who it is. But it is someone from Meadowbrook because the uniform policy is VERY strict. I have never gotten bullied or picked on...ever. The people are really nice. I went to Meadowbrook for my 6th, 7th, and now my 8th grade year. During Graduation everyone cries. The school is so small you cant help but develop quailty friendships. Im going to miss Meadowbrook. And The 'Ann Hopkins' Is Jack's mom! HI JACK.
I just started at MBK this 8th grade year ( transfer from Blair ) and I luv it! The teachers are awesome! The students are really nice and activities are great. The only thing that bugs me is how strict the uniform poicly is I mean we cant even wear colored tank tops or have like a polka dot on our socks. Anyway I totally reccomend this school for anyone aiming high!
