I have been at this school my entire life. I started in Junior Kindergarten, and now I am currently in 7th grade. Next year is my last year. You should know that the students and faculty have made me a great Student Athlete. This year I was the Goalie for the Boy's Lacrosse Team, and did an outstanding job. I like how my friends have cheered me up, and the newly added building, The Gardner Hall. Grymes Memorial School is probably one of the best schools you can choose in Central Virginia.

Grymes Memorial School is an excellent school, and a great educational asset to our area!! From the Head Of School to the dedicated and involved parents, teachers and staff... Grymes is a like a home away from home, filled with love, peace and positive energy!! This is definitely the type of nurturing environment and community you would like your kids to learn and grow up in!!

Nice small, school that offers a decent education in a very home-like, safe environment. The quality of teachers is uneven. Some are truly excellent others just mediocre. It seems like they haven't been able to keep some of the great teachers for a long tirme. Despite tremendous parental support and involvement I haven't been impressed with the final "product" Most of these students would have done equally well in public schools. I think Grymes could do a better job in the use of web technology and more individualized teaching methods. Children carry heavy volume of books on the daily basis. Why aren't they using Web more or have books on-line? Some staff vehicles are covered with political stickers. Maybe it would be prudent to keep their political views private? Overall, it is a nice, little school that hasn't lived up to its full potential.

My daughter is in K at Grymes. She attended JK last year. An amazing school where education truly comes first. The teachers and staff are first class and very caring. After a few days my daughter felt right at home. I love dropping her at school every morning and seeing the huge smile on her face. The convenience of picking her up 5 minutes from where I work is a huge plust. My husband likes the quaintness of the school and how it reminds him of the school he attended as a child. We highly recommend Grymes to families who are looking for the best education for their child in a "family" environment.

I'll be the first to say I am a picky parent. We have tried out many of our local schools private and public and have never been as happy as we are with Grymes. The staff is enthusiastic, and cheerful. I've never seen people so happy in a work environment! : ) Grymes is very challenging academically. This took a while for my daughter to adjust to. The staff was so helpful and patient, tutoring her and following up with me at home. The children are allowed a great amount of creative freedom. They have many breaks throughout the day, which is good for children who like to be active. They also offer art a few times a week as well as Spanish for all grades. I would highly recommend visiting the school for a day. My only regret is not starting my daughter at Grymes earlier.

We have entered our third year at Grymes Memorial School. Our children are happy and when you enter the halls of Grymes you see that the other children are as well. My children have been well prepared for each grade they have entered. They are encouraged to work hard and do their best. They are challenged. The mix of arts and traditional academics is just right and will prepare them for 9th grade and beyond. The discipline, manners and social skills that is emphasized at Grymes is evident. Grymes is a safe and nuturing place. There is no perfect school. Grymes continues to grow with its students and faculty. It is an environment open to it's families. We are comfortable to come and go and voice our opinions. They are on the right track and we are proud to be a part of it.

We researched several schools before choosing Grymes. Grymes is so wonderful. It is the only school I visited that combined strong academics with strong nuturing. They work so hard to help each individual achieve their personal best. The children are well educated, confident and well spoken.

Grymes Memorial School offers an outstanding educational experience. The teachers are willing to work with parents on their child's overall education. Our daughter is entering 5th grade, and she's been at GMS since Pre-K.

Disgusting...students there do not strive to gain a good learning experience and my daughter agrees!

I am impressed with the way GMS teaches children to think. The teachers continue to draw each child out, its amazing to see the growth at the end of each year. The school has a very warm friendly atmosphere, everyone cares for each other. I am pleased to have my children there.

I am the guardian/grandmother of a student at Grymes Memorial School. Grymes Memorial School's staff provides an excellent learning environment. I love the small classes and the teacher/student ratio per class. Grymes Memorial School is the best school for my grandchild to achieve success.

Grymes is a school you have to put on your list to visit. We chose Grymes because the school hires extraordinary teachers and gives them the freedom to teach. When you peek into the class rooms, the kids are totally engaged. Because the school has a 5:1 student:teacher ratio, there is no need to reduce a child down to a statistic, test score, or grade. Kids don t simply get pushed through the system. Because the school only has around 170 students (pre-K through 8th), they aren t focused on crowd control; instead the kids are treated like thinking beings. As a result they are self-confident and respectful. The school is not pretentious, is diverse, and is focused on providing kids with an exceptional educational experience in a safe and loving environment. Our son is thriving. He comes home enthusiastic and proud of his accomplishments and looks forward to the next school day.

We researched several private schools before we decided on Grymes Memorial. There are some good schools in our area, private and public, but our son needed a school that will really challenge him without frustrating him, and we found that at Grymes. As a parent, I do a lot of volunteering at Grymes, one of several that do, and I know that each student is given special attention, no matter what level of learning they are at and they all are doing great. We have a fabulous head master that runs the school, he listens to suggestions but has no problem saying no, as well as a great board of directors. Our teachers are superior, stop in and read their bios, and the subjects taught are equal to and/or above other schools. I know because I have three children that graduated from other schools before moving here. It`s fun too !

The good: small classes, opportunities for students to become involved, nice group of kids; the bad: an emphasis on arts at the expense of math and science; a very crowded schedule with few electives; excessive homework which is busy work; lots of workbooks to be filled in, even during the summer; the ugly: school has a lot of parents overly involved and who have undue influence.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

Oops! We currently do not have any student information for this school. We rely on the state Department of Education, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and in some cases school administrators such as registrars and principals for this data.
