Dis-compassionate, unkind, with bullies for teachers. The best thing for a child attending this school to survive is to go unnoticed.
Honestly, I would not recommend this high school. Event though the academics are fenominal, the students are not. A lot of drama occurs at this school, not only for me but for other students as well. The students are not polite.
I graduated from Hidden Valley a few years ago, and I honestly feel very prepared for life after high school. I took AP and Duel level courses, and I feel sometimes these classes were harder than classes I have taken in college since they met everyday. Hidden Valley is extremely competitive in academics and sports. This can be a good or a bad thing. Schools in this part of Roanoke, VA are biased towards students who are rich and good athletes, yet students who do work hard can excel here, regardless of their background. Of course, some teachers also just focus on students passing the Virginia SOL tests. Overall, especially compared to other schools in cities I have lived in, it is a great school in a safe environment.
this school is one of the better high schools in the county. administrative staff are nice, cafeteria staff are excellent, and some teachers are nice. they are definitely 'sol' bound. meaning everything they do is sol related. VERY HIGH ON SPORTS EXCEL IN ALL SPORTS ACTIVITIES....
There is barely any fights, Our academics are all good with 95% or so passing sols, for the short time our school has been open we have had a good athletic program.
Safe school with a lot of opportunities. That being said, if you're looking for a challenge for your child look elsewhere. Coming from an '06 grad who has been through college: The parents run this school. Teachers are afraid to give students grades they deserve because parents demand their child receive high grades to attend top universities. The emphasis is on grades, not education. I can honestly say I was not very well prepared for college by most of the teachers in this school, and was able to breeze through without learning much of anything. With that being said, I had a great time and never felt unsafe. Send your kid here if you want them to go to college, send them elsewhere if you want them to get a good education.
My child is excelling at school, because of the curriculum and the excellent teachers at Hidden Valley. They are preparing the kids to succeed in college. There will always be those that complain that HV is too hard, has too much homework, or too many classes required for graduation.... but you or your child will be left behind in this global economy if you wish for an easier 'ride'.
My daughter loves this school! She is taking all advanced classes and is on sports team at the school. The Principal is very responsive, and almost all of her teachers are excellent. She's made many friends from all the grades and has not had any problems with bullying at the school.
I love Hidden Valley it is an amazing place. There are not any down falls. The only thing is that if you're not rich, you might as well not go
I hate this school it is horrible and to much work on my child and there is alot of classes for her.
HVHS is excellent. I found thePrincipal, Ms. Stegall, to be very responsive, helpful and great to talk with. With very few exceptions, the teachers are all top notch and teaching toward a college curriculum. My daughter was very well prepared for college.
New principal is vast improvement over the old. Unfortunately for my children, the size of the parents' bank account appears to be the most important thing at hiden valley.
I love this school. the teachers and administrative staff are so involved in sports, band, and the arts at hidden valley. people are very open minded and whatever kind of person you are, you can find a group of people that will accept you because hidden valley is very diverse. there are MANY different clubs and organizations that you can become apart of. Mrs. Stegal, the principal, is very supportive of all sports (or band). she attends many games, matches, meets, tournaments, and competitions on many different levels.
There is a place for everyone to be involved in something here. Parental involvement is unprecedented, academics are highest in the district, and sports accolades are mounting after only 5 years. Fine arts participation in all areas is amazing, with over 20% of students in marching band (Virginia Honor Band). Key Club, Beta Club, and almost anything else you can imagine.
hidden valley is awesome. nothing in state of va compares. big ups to mass comm!
Academics are good, really some of the best in the area. Administration has been not so good. Fortunately, the old principal has retired. Perhaps the new principal can improve the administration.
I have attended Hidden Valley High School for three years now and it is great. with an enrollment of aprox. 1200 students and more than 400 students involved with the music department (concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, marching band,stage/jazz band, instrumental ensemble, choir, and drama). if you are a student or a parent of a student that is interested in the fine arts, this is probably the best school in western Va for you. each student is issued a laptop computer for use in the classroom to expose students to technological advances that can put them above the average American in their computer know-how. Hidden Valley High School, now undergoing its 5th year open to students, is well underway in achieving academic success with over 93% of its students passing the Va standardized test, the Standers of Learning (SOL).
A shiny new building, but looks can be deceiving. Academics are good. There is plenty of room for improvement on other fronts, expecially leadership from the administration.
A stunning facility with a large host of opportunities for students to be involved with the school, from marching band to ultimate frisbee. Administration very open to suggestions, new ideas. Have had a lot of exposure to the teachers, including many not involved with my child, but I see a high level of motivation, dedication and job satisfaction among the staff. Any one who has been approached for special assistance has bent over backward to offer it or find someone who can. Very low level of violence/bullying, truancy. Students are overall respectful of the staff and other students. Average levels of drug/alcohol use. High, very high level of parent involvement in volunteer activites. Laptops issued to each freshman student for 4 yrs use.
We have been very disappointed in Hidden Valley High. Academically it is fine, but the elitist atmosphere has soured the experience for our children. At Hidden Valley High, if you are not on the 'A' list, you are no one. The principal simply refuses to see any problem. We are seriously considering private school.
