I am a former student. I attended 5-11th and am now 34 (yeah that long ago) Essex has ALWAYS been more about sports, which is ok I guess. And even back then the councellors were only interested in students who didn't really need the help. Essex used to be BIG on their music, evidently not so now. Vocational opportunties back then were shop, I think there may have been one other but it was a loooong time ago..lol..Even back in my day the students and staff were overly dramatic, evidently some things never change. Also I see the trees that were planted way back when have grown nicely... I do still wonder how much of the "forest" is left behind the school, and if the old "haunted house" is still there or if it finally fell down..lol Frankly it seems that Essex High is STILL stuck in the stone ages... LOL

The elementary school is excellent but after 4th grade the system falter then nearly fails it's students. Seems to be all about sports with academics a distant second. Vocational opportunities for those who are not academically inclined ( and not all students are is lacking terribly) Guidance counsellors seem only interested in those students who don't really need the help. There is much room for improvement and safety is also an issue, although that is unfortunately true in many schools.

I think essex county public schools need to improve on the music program. Essex county is more of a sports school and we are prided for that. But its a small town school with small town people and if you come from the city its a big change! but I like it.
