Oakton High School is one of the best public schools I've encountered. Their academics are challenging, but level appropriate. Students are very well prepared for college. Their music, arts and athletic programs consistently excel in region and state wide competition. The parents are very involved in the school. The students engage in typical high school activities (i.e. wild partying), but this does not seem to interfere with their academic performance. The teachers are generally dedicated and seem to enjoy their work. This is a very good school.
Oakton is one of the best schools in the state. Not only are their academic programs and extra-curricular activities very rewarding, they have great sports, music, drama and newspaper. The only downside to the school is the speading out of the boundaries. Half of the students are from Herndon and have to travel about 20 minutes to school, while the other third are from the Oakton / Vienna areas where the level of income fluctuates greatly. While a majority of the students come from upper-middle-class families, some lower-income students exist as well, which is mainly where the racial / economical barriers are drawn. In terms of the guidance department, as a 2005 graduate I didn't care much for the guidance department. Overall, the school provides a great environment for all social groups and helps give students a great four years.
My daughter has attended Oakton for 6 months, though not into sports, band or music, she has enjoyed her experience with the drama department. Most of her teachers are extremely well educated and professional. Blackboard is a tool on the internet that is used to keep the kids upto date on homework assignments, grades and activites that are available. Emails are sent to parents regularly if a student has failed a test or is failing a class. Sports is very competitive so prepare early if you wish to get on any team. This is a large school but very well organized and safe. I would highly recommend this school.
Excellent teaching faculty, good selection of AP classes, nationally ranked high school. Only downside is large size can be tough for quieter kids or kids who feel overwhelmed easily.
Oakton is a school that provides academic and atheletic opportunities that strongly support each other (being smart and a jock are not mutually exclusive). While cliques exist, they intermingle and coexist with few problems. Regarding the racial issue, the reason why racial lines exist is because most of the whites come from one middle school while most of the minorities come from another. Thus, preexisting friendships and groups carry over from middle school. Even then, by senior year, many of the boundaries are broken down. My friends and I are class of 2001 graduate and now a college graduates with great entry level jobs (every one of them); that should be some indication of the education Oakton can provide. Not to mention it high school provided some of the best moments of my life. ~2001
Large but orderly school that's very clean and academically diverse. High academic standards and safe environment!
Oakton High is a great school. It has a great academics program, a great athletics program and a great music program. The SOL scores are high, the sports teams do well yearly and the orchestra, band and chorus do well in their competitions.
Teacher quality was uneven, some subjects rather weak. Otherwise the school environment was safe and encouraging.
Oakton is a wonderful school, I would highly suggest any student going there. There are many AP and GT classes to choose from, and the athletics are great as well. For students who are not athletic, Oakton has an incredible band, choral, and strings department. For those who are neither athletically nor musically inclined, there are many other after school programs, whether it be honor societies, the step team, or student government, there are so many to choose from. While it is true that racially the groups at Oakton are somewhat separated, they all coexist peacefully and do this by their own choosing. Most kids end up having loose cliques of friends based off of their after school activities anyways. OHS runs a tight ship in terms of discipline, so students feel very protected. The only downside is the guidance department, but even so Oakton is incredible and highly suggested.
Oakton is one of the best schools in the state. They have an excellent and very challenging academic program. This coupled with one of the best sports programs in the state. Also, this school is very fun to attend. The enviornment is awesome and the school pride is great.
Oakton is an excellent school with courses that challange students with a range of abilities. It has excellent music (band and chorus) teachers and facilities. There do not appear to be any significant disciplinary problems. Two of my kids have attended the school (one already graduated) and both have enjoyed it. I have no problem recommending it as an excellent school.
This school is a racial school (black students, white students, asians, etc. are divided into groups). This is a terrible school for non-athletic students, but OK for athletic stduents because some athletic groups are good. I do not recommend this school for smart students who want to learn a lot. For students that only care about sports and other activities and do not care about grades, this school will suit them. Also, the teachers are so used to being fooled and lied to, they don't trust the most responsible students.
