I graduated from Cox in 2012. I really cannot rightfully give this school a lower rating than 5 stars. As a teenager I had many moments of criticism for this school, but in hindsight I credit Cox for giving me a great high school experience. I had several teachers that challenged me and made me a better thinker. They always encouraged and helped me toward college goals, even when I was uninterested in them. I am now in my 3rd year of college and excelling. I will point out a few criticisms that are not necessarily Cox's fault or not enough to bring down the rating. One, there is an excessive amount of access to drugs and alcohol among Cox students (lots of $$$). Two, the VBCPS schedule (waking up at 6) and grading scale makes things unnecessarily difficult for students. Finally, the current administration is making Cox a much less fun and encouraging environment than when I first arrive as a freshman in 2008. Overall, you can expect a school with an excellent faculty and tons of ways to get involved.
This school has been wonderful! Our daughter has excelled and is excited to go to school everyday. You don't find many teenagers who enjoy high school but when the staff makes learning enjoyable and motivates the students everyday it makes a huge difference. Our daughter is already preparing for college is doing very well in all her classes. It's a very safe school, she has friends, the staff communicates, and over all we are very pleased. Highly recommend all the schools in VBCPS. We have children at Trantwood Elementary, Great Neck Middle, and Cox they have all been Outstanding, very impressive!!! As a military family we have lived many places in the country and these schools by far outshine others. Great job Va Beach!
Cox Highschool was very helpfull with the application proces. Transitioning from another country is never easy but our guidance counselor help us true the process. And my child felt at home from the beginning of school.
Frank W. Cox has been an excellent fit for my children. The staff of teachers and counselors have all gone above and beyond. I have children with various needs from IEP to AP and the school has more than met all my expectations.
With 4 years of having my AA/F child going here, I feel so blessed to be a part of the Cox High program. From the teachers, the staff, and the students, as high school go it, no one place is perfect, but this was a great place for her to find her own friends, grow, and get a quality education for college.
This school is the best school in Great Neck, if not all of Virginia Beach. The Teachers are fantastic and always willing to go out of their way for their students and encourage / help them to be the best they can be. I would like to say too that all the schools in this area are the best of the best...I just cannot say enough good things to justify what a great education they offer our kids. If you want the besy education for your kids, then feel secure in knowing that they'll get it here! They deserve it!!
I have three kids currently enrolled at Cox High School. I think it is overall a very good school providing a quality education for several reasons. The academic environment is very challenging and demanding. There are lots of opportunities for kids to excel in this area if they desire. I have found most teachers to be very responsive to my inquiries. There are lots of really great kids at teh school doing positive things if you child can hook up with the right crowd. On the down side, the school has some very difficult inflexible teachers that can make your child's life miserable. Last year we had two teachers that no matter how hard the kids studied they ended up with C's. The bar seems to be set very high at Cox. Sports teams are very competitive and difficult to make unless you are an elite athlete. Hope these comments hlep.
As a student at cox the education is okay, teachers arent the best. The big problem are the students. I came from bayside high school and at Cox students are vevry bullying and it is very cliquey. Overall i wouldnt recomend this school.
I'm currently a student at Cox. I'm not impressed at all with the school. Cox has ridiculous restrictions and regulations along with unnecessary consequences. Drugs and alcohol are a HUGE issue here. Cox is known to be the 'party school' of the district and everyone I know has done or still does drugs, drinks, and has lost their virginity. The teachers are somewhat okay, it all depends on how you act around them. The schedule is organized and well thought out. But I will say that unless you want your kid to sink into terrible peer pressure, DO NOT come here.
currently being a student at cox im in love with eeryone here. even though everyone thinks its a school with a lot of drugs, it has no more than any other high school. its actually the school with the least ammount of drugs that i have gone to in virginia beach because I have already gone to FC and Kellam. In regards to the teachers, they are absolutely wounderful. They all help you the best they can and they stay after school if you need.
I am a military spouse who has had my children in schools all across the United States. Cox High School is by far the safest school that my child has ever attended. Unfortunately, the Special Education system at Cox did not serve him very well. The teachers did not communicate his progress in a timely manner, nor did they behave professionaly during IEP meetings. Even the assisant principal behaved unprofessionally. I was greatly disappointed and pulled my son out of this school. At this point in the game, there is no room for academic failure due to poor teacher involvement. Now I homeschool him and he's doing well.
We recently moved to Va from Illinois. Initially my daughter struggled because the grading was different, and the work was harder. She actually had homework! Since my daughter started attending Cox she has felt challenged and as though she is really learning. She comes home daily telling me something that she has learned. Not only is she challenged academically, but she has also enjoyed being involved with the track team. Cox is extremely competitive, but I don't think of that as a negative. Although my daughter is a freshman this year she is really thinking about where she wants to be after graduation, and working toward that goal; using Cox as a springboard toward her future successes. I have also found the teachers to be extremely helpful and giving of their time. I look forward to her next three years at Cox because I KNOW she will get an awesome education!
This school has great test scores so the teachers are obviously doing there work. Their fine arts program is amzazing as well. The academic program at Cox is by far the best in the area. The only problem with this school is the amount of student drug use. Being a student I know this. It's amazing how well the scores are there.
The academic program at Cox is by far the best in the area. The teachers are absolutely amazing and challenge students here more than any other high school in the city. Although students do have money, it's just as easy for kids to find drugs as it is at any other high school in the area. Cox High is a public school with a private school education. The principal is making a lot of discipline changes and is making it harder for inappropriate things to happen on school grounds. He has taken the stand of punishment on the first offense and not taking students breaking the rules. Cox has the best test scores is ranked in the top 200 schools in the Nation. Cox also has the best coaches, SCA, and extracurriculars. Student involvement is amazing.
As a student at cox i can say that its a good school when it comes to education. When it come to safty and discipline i would have to say that its on the low side of the chart. As many know coxs has a bad rep for drug many hate to amit to it but its true i see it everyday. If a parent ask me if I think they should let there child go to cox i would say no.
The teachers are very dedicated here. They do everything in their power to help you. Theres many different clubs and sports that you can get involved in. There are a lot of drugs around the area and in the school. Its a very wealthy area and these kids have money to spend. As a student that currently goes there (moved here at the beginning of the year), I was shocked in the amount of drug activity and money around here. Keep an eye on your kids, and pay attention to the friends they make. Other then that I was impressed with the quality of the school.
As a parent of a current Cox student, I am pleased with the overall academic programs. I do also see the 'cliques' in the student body as well as the parents. My child has been involved in the Crew Club since 9th grade. It has been a wonderful experience. There is so much practice (fall & spring)and conditioning (winter) that I am not concerned with the drugs. My child has many good friends in crew and outside of crew as well. Parent involvement in crew is outstanding. The club could not survive as well as they have without the parents. It is very important for students to become involved in activities/sports in high school.
I found both of the reviews I read to be on the mark. As a graduate of Cox I would like to confirm that there are indeed a lot of drugs being passed around the halls. The parent who said that there is money at Cox is absolutley correct. A look at the parking lot will show students driving nicer cars than the faculty. I do think I got a great education though, and currently hold a 3.6 GPA at a private univeristy in my junior year. At a minimum I was prepared to further my education and have found that I was ahead of my peer group when it came to use of English Language Skills and Mathmatics. If your child is transfering in to Cox be prepared to encounter cliques in the student body as well as with the parents. Be prepared for classism and a 'locals only' attitude.
I have had children at Cox High School for the past 7 years. Being military we've experienced school systems in California and overseas and by comparison Virginia Beach City Public Schools are very conservative and narrow minded. Family life education is 'laughable' and a waste of taxpayer money and students time! Large numbers of parents of current students are alumni of Cox H.S., have tight cliques and control the social and volunteer committees. On the up side - the German (Herr Becker)and Spanish language programs are fabulous. Mr. Yano (English) is spectacular and truely teaches critical thinking skills! Mrs. Roy (A.P. European history) managed to 'hook' my, then, 11th grader on history!
Cox is an excellent school as far as scholastics but be sure to watch your child's after school social activities. Most kids at Cox have wealthy parents and have the means to support their drug addictions. It is a known fact Cox has more kids arrested for underage drinking and drug related arrests so beware of who your child befriends. The best clubs to join are Key club and any Drama related activity. The sports departments are awesome and being a past gymnast I loved Coach H.
